Bangladesh is a fascinating country in all sorts of ways, as highlighted by its recent revolution. But can the country overcome its political problems and forge a new future? Or will it be a return to business as usual under its two parties and two influential women leaders? As ever, I look forward to hearing your thoughts in the comments below.

James I am a Bengali American long time viewer of your videos. I am really glad you covered the Bangladeshi revolution! I hope you will read this, I have a small comment to add. I am a secular liberal person who believes in the separation of church and state. I hate religious politics and have always criticized Jamat E Islam party (Jamat). Having said that, the fear of religious extremism is a narrative that is being pushed heavily by the Indian media. They have a vested interest to keep a pro Indian or Indian puppet government in power (Depends on how harsh critic you want to be) of the unequal treaties Bangladesh signed for no reason. I have to say I was throughly surprised by the role of Jamat during and post revolution. Their members are not connected to any looting or any controversy. Their leader last week publicly came and said Islam teaches me to forgive and so I forgive Awamileague. That is shocking given they were the most repressed group in last 15 years. And a few days before the revolution they were officially a banned political party. They were blamed for the revolution. Government wanted to cover up their actions during the protests by marking everyone as Islamists. Anyways, when rumors of Hindus being attacked was being spread in Indian media, Jamat ordered all of their members to guard all the temples and homes of minorities (Police was at that time refusing to work). Most major attacks on Hindus that was broadcasted in Indian media that I tracked fell under 3 categories: Attack on Awamileague members that happens to be Hindu, fake news (picture/video was not of any Hindu person), False flag attack (Member of Awamileague attacking temple and blaming it on Jamat, again pushing the narrative that this was all Islamist not students causing the revolution). I can go by example after example but I am sure you have done your research. When Hindu community in Chittagong called for a solidarity march, Jamat called a unity march to go with the Hindu community and make sure they have enough security. It was very harmonious given Muslims and Hindus were all chanting “Religion is to their own, this country belongs to everyone”. In the upcoming religious event for Hindu people Durga Puja, Jamat’s leader again asked his party members to provide security and make sure no one causes violence in name of Islam. As a secular person this makes me smile. I don’t know if this is public stunt or for real but their actions were truly remarkable. What gives me hope is that the leader of Jamat in his younger years were part of left wing National Socialist Party. Hindu communities are truly grateful to him. He is being invited by Hindu community leaders almost every week to thank him. I hope he truly reforms the Jamat party. I am still skeptical but I will give credit where its due. Sorry for the long message. Thanks as always for your content!

@RaviKiran-uq8np That claim was debunked a while ago. The allegation originally came from some Indian media sources claiming Hasina said it was the Americans because they wanted this island, which is too small to be of any use to the Americans anyway. Her son denied denied she said this. This wasn't a "yellow revolution," and if it was engineered, it was Hasinas own fault. She surrounded herself with corrupt and selfish people, including her devious son who wanted to get rich and were cruel to anyone who opposed them. Under her reign, the opposition were harassed and attacked. People were either killed or disappeared, and vast sums of money went into Awami league leaders pockets. Her arrogance allowed her to insult the students through this quota that she pushed through and killed hundreds of students. The Indian media is just upset that an ally has been removed, so it may be grasping at straws.

There is a lot of information you missed out of this video East Pakistan which is now Bangladesh was the richest part of the East & West Pakistan. Majority of the income of the new nation came from East Pakistan. Islamabad which is now the capital of Pakistan was built from the income of East Pakistan (Bangladesh) while all the income was being funnelled from East to West ,that's how the Awami league came to be founded, who actually won the election of the two states but the West Pakistani refused to except the election results which resulted into the uprising to 1971 war of independence. Bangladesh pre British rule was that of all major Europe GDP, Bangladesh was the place where luxury apparels and goods where made.

Thanks. I know I had to miss out a lot. It is a huge subject. The trouble is that the more information you put in to a video, the more confusing it becomes for someone who doesn’t know about the history of a subject. I was already worried that it was getting too complex anyway. (I didn’t mention the Ershad period for that reason.) But hopefully it provided a good outline for viewers who might be entirely new to the topic.
@cenazivota58402 ай бұрын
@@JamesKerLindsay The omission of Ershad and subsequent presentation of 2 parties is a bit dubious. As there are basically 4 main strong and established political movements in Bangladesh: Awami, BNP, Jatiya Party (Ershad's widow Rowshan) and Jamaat-e-Islami (underground). IMHO we might very easy see shift of power from one of the dominant ones to one of these two in the shadows. Founding a new project will be very difficult and they have well-organised structure and are not discredited by past decades of rule (keeping status quo and return of the two major parties seems unlikely given how much they discredited themselves when in power). Ershad seems as lesser evil of these two main alternatives. Of course I would wish for some Yunus or student mass movement, but it seems very unlikely to me - trying to be realistic and pragmatic here.

Couple thing to note: 1. BNP is not and never had been an Islamist party. They never claimed any religious views either way. They are mostly a political party of businessman. The most popular Islamist political party is Jamaat-e-Islam, which is older than Awami league, and has a very controversial role in our independence war in 1971. 2. There are a few misinformation about the recent protests. Please see Al-Jajeera's news, they are authentic from the feild. The student wing, and few other wings of Awami League, the ruling party, has open fired on the students and people. A lot of people had died from sniper shots, bullets were fired from helicopters, to kill people on the roof tops. Children as young as 3 year olds have died, not from stray bullets, but direct shots. People died in their bedrooms from sniper shots. These infuriated people and the attacks that are being publicised as "attacks on minorities" are mostly debunked. Some hindu residences got attacked, because of their involvement with Awami League, not of religion. And, some attacks were staged. There were some genuine attacks happened in the aftermath of a revolution, but they are few and far betwen. Hope you'll find the right information. There are a lot of propaganda going on.

Bangladesh is currently going through a difficult time. Minorities are being attacked, and the present government and administration have failed to provide them with adequate security. Several Awami League ministers were also attacked after the fall of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Mobs have targeted national and government properties, destroying statues and monuments related to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The country is heading towards bankruptcy, with an overwhelming amount of debt. Bangladesh urgently needs to pay $650 million to Russia for the nuclear power plant project. Additionally, Indian Adani Power is demanding $800 million from Bangladesh as overdue payment for electricity. Meanwhile, student political groups, known as somoynoykari, are acting with undue influence, pressuring officials to resign from their positions, including teachers and doctors. Recently, a boy was killed by an Islamic mob for allegedly insulting the Prophet, and this happened while the police and military stood by, witnessing the incident. The situation is becoming increasingly dire, and there are concerns that the country might descend into a Taliban-like state.

😱 Why does America welcome interim govt in Bangladesh? 🇧🇩🇺🇸The US State Dept Spokesperson issued a statement declaring, “we welcome the interim government,” in which controversial Muhammad Yunus is No.1 candidate for 'senior advisor'. ❗️The military coup in Bangladesh has all the hallmarks of a coup orchestrated by the CIA: 🇵🇰Pakistan's ISI assisted in providing Islamists the street power through its religious proxies. ☠️ What's more, by instigating the coup in BD, Washington can block the chain of influence of China’s economic expansion, while at the same time, target Indian security from Kashmir (Pakistan-funded militants) in the West and Bangladesh in the East.

The country's problems are far more complex in nature though the July Revolution has seemingly brought about a temporary change of the bearer of office the system is still in place, the stalwarts of both parties will not find it unacceptable to bring a change to structures in place and like you alluded to this is a way of having religious extremism into the politics which will ultimately lead to the contagious effect. here we are seeing too distinct ideologies of secularism and conservative. secularism either way both routes will continue to sponsor instability as on will attract religious fundamentalists to oppose and make the state ungovernable and conservatism will most likely erode democracy.

These revolutions tend to follow a pattern: 1. Civilian revolt over civic issues overthrows a government unwilling to use force. 2. Government gets replaced at first by well-meaning civilian leaders in the form of a coalition. At this stage, there is popular support for these leaders and their promises. 3. Attempts are made to forge a new constitution, with high-minded principles such as state secularism and full rights for women. 3. Few months down the line, the well-meaning civilian leaders get fed up and either resign or get bumped out by military leaders. 4. The military leaders overthrow the civilian leaders and start fighting over control of the country, usually under the guise of affirming law and order. 5. It is at this stage that military leaders often take the help from extremely radical paramilitaries which go to town on chosen minority populations with impunity in the name of quelling dissent (sending out a message, really). 6. The just-drafted constitution is thrown to the wind, to be replaced by a constitutional document which reinstates the most regressive policies in order to placate the worst elements of society which are politically useful. 7. Overall state order is thrown to the wind; and the only one that can restore order is a military man who steps in as President and leaves unfilled his future date of resignation. His rule is marked by unspeakable brutality and suppression of freedom; people put up with it in the name of stability and peace. 8. Inevitably, this will lead to economic hardships, setting up the next round of illegal immigration into Europe, North America and possibly India. Happy times! We have seen this above pattern of events, in much similar shape or form, in Egypt, Sudan, Tunisia, Syria, Burkina Faso (?) and Myanmar. This in the first three decades of the 21st century alone. Why should Bangladesh be any different? What is there to suggest Yunus is not just another Hamdok?

The problem with revolution is that somebody has to pay for the necessities to make it happen (bullets if a violent uprising for example). For this reason they almost never lead to a decentralization of power, particularly economic power (which is the power over life itself). What you can get is a localization of power though.

Of course, there are other parties, such as the Monter Raving Looney Party, but it is generally two main parties that control things. Also, I find it curious that you bring up climate change in relation to Bangladesh's flooding problems. I seem to remember that this is actually quite common historically. The part that's wrong is you get a failing democracy. Democrats are busy with filling their agenda, republicans then come into and undoes the work democrats did and get busy filling up their own agenda. In a true democratic country you would have all the parties trying to work together on certain issues, for example on US working on healthcare and public transportation. But both parties have 180° views on those issues, in turn nothing ever gets done. But billions get wasted on shit like hyperloop or underground tunnel but the actual high speed train that everybody wanted gets put behind the backburner. Also corruption, both parties are just funded by billionares who wants the country to run in their own way, SBF managed to not get caught for so long because he paid off millions in "lobbying"(legal bribery) to US senators and nobody decided to audit or check FTX ever.

The young people want to see positive change that will improve their standard of living , the Bangladesh economy has been growing impressively but the country still has this bugbear of endemic corruption .
