Bangladesh is battling to stay above water. By 2050, one in every seven people in the country will be displaced by climate-related factors.
We go on a journey across the south Asian nation to understand why three quarters of the country is inundated by its rivers bursting their banks every year. On this journey, we investigate how floods threatens the country's food security, how soil erosion is leaving thousands homeless and meet climate refugees migrating from their homes to survive.
Along the way, we meet communities adapting to climate change by growing food on water in an effort to counter rising sea levels as rising sea-level threatens to overtake 11% of the country's land within the next 30 years. We visit the frontlines of the country's battle against climate change to meet activists raising awareness against man-made changes to the country's water resources which may leave a devastating impact on its economy.

About Once Upon A River: In this three-part series, we discover historical ties between communities and with some of the most critical waterways in Asia.

lol the government of Bangladesh is a joke. In fact she is a dictator, don't let anyone to vote against her. She taxes heavily and after sucking all the money from the poor hard working people she sends the money to foreign countries (where her son and relative live). She builds bridge and tunnel or put satellite by taking hefty loans from other countries (which eventually public will have to pay) and names them after her daddy. Such a nonsense and people of Bangladesh can't say any sh*t.

Thanks CNA for this informative documentary. The graphics are top notch. You gave the oppressed people voice. Role of India cannot be undermined in this water crisis (started with Farakkah dam in Ganges channel)but thats what a larger country does to smaller ones for their own prosperity. China is doing the same to India. No one to regulate these nationalistic behaviour. Its a perpetual tradition to supress the smaller community/nation's resources. We did the same to tribals in Chittagong hill tracts. I hope in future mankind will rise above these differences.

So, among all other measures of mitigation, the Bangladeshi's must work on birth control. Fertility rates are declining ... and that is a great thing, but think what could be done with just one child per family. It would certainly make a difference to those at risk in 2050. Ditto for the rest of Asia. A pity such issues were not addressed fifty years ago. It would have avoided so much future pain and suffering.

@@michibraun3063 one child policy is not a solution for bangladesh. If u know about economics then you will know what I am talking about. Bangladesh's aggregated demand has still capacity to increase for actual economic growth. Meaning it has not utilised it's resources including its people. Thx to the government we have a large unemployment rate in our country. We have so much spare capacity but government is not utilising it. Cutting off the population won't do any good it will just reduce our population and factors of production. Meaning our maximum level of output will decrease. Meaning in the future we will face high inflation rate if the government decides to finally increase our Aggregate demand. So population growth is fine; there is nothing wrong with it. It's just that there is poor government planning to utilize these resources, which includes human capital.

For your kind information 7 out of 10 world's best green factories are situated in Bangladesh and we're heavily working on this issue to make our environment sustainable... And all the floods that we face every year are because of our so called friendly neighbour India.....they open all the sluice gates of all their dams which they built intensionally on our mutual international rivers and make us flooded to keep themselves safe from over flowing river and they are also the same people who break all the treaties of water sharing and make us deprived from our own water during the summer and dry season....as a result we get flooded when we have enough water and our lands become deserts in summer when we actually need water....this is India for you..

Whenever you build a dam you are preventing the water from flowing back to the sea or lake of the ocean. That water must go back to where it came from or it'll have future consequences. One is to reduce the ocean salinity. Raising the salinity could effect the ice in polar regions, fish life is effected negatively and much more.

It is happening right now in Bangladesh ! People are in precarious position in the front line of rising seas and massive floods. The depletion of the aquifer causes subsidence of the of surface! They need to bring excess rain water from the surplus north east districts like Sylhet and Maymenshing districts ! Bhairab Bazaar to Dhaka water pipelines may be a straight forward city water project. The area upstream from Bhairab Bazaar has no significant source of pollution or contamination! The area may be declared protected safe drinking water resources area for the city of Dhaka for the long term. I am sure the big shots in the government and leadership don’t know how to even accept any good suggestions. They are always looking for some foreign entity to give them a lump sum donation or gift of projects. India has been creating toxic relationships with all the neighbors. For Bangladesh they have been stealing our water during the dry season and suddenly flooding us during the excess rain season without any coordination or considerations. India is totally acting unacceptable. Urgently action are needed for the safety of the people. Life is unsustainable if these climate emergencies are not mitigated soon. We don’t want divisiveness among us during our crisis. Our farmers are resourceful and resilient. But we need to solve our problems. Regards

We know that you're also suffering but does it means that you will increase the sufferings of your neighbour country by building more and more dams! Every country is building dams in this 21st century for their own sake but does it means you won't give the right share of water to the countries on downstream. You don't even dare to behave like this with any other neighbors of yours except Bangladesh.
