It caused outrage all over Britain, and the world. We often hear this shit from judges. They have the discretion not to grant bail, and they can give much higher sentences than they do. There is a reason they don't.....every day more and more rapists and pedophiles with hundreds of victims behind them get non - custodial sentences. In NZ one very violent rapist had 166 convictions.......how was he allowed out to keep doing it? Whoever lets them go free are complicit. I am sick of criminals having far more rights than victims. And in NZ now they are about to spend millions of taxpayer dollars putting soft serve ice cream machines in the prisons......while many of our pensioners cannot afford an ice cream....or food or teabags or medical care. And the sister, the guilt she must feel for bringing Calanca into their life. But she couldn't have known (although she knew of the ``community service'' incident, who would think anyone would have received community service sentence for anything serious?!) By the time she was in America and was receiving the crazy letters from Calanca, it was too late. Anything she said at that point was gonna make him snap and he was gonna kill someone.

J DR it’s a common occurrence here in Australia that people get off lightly and go on to reoffend, usually worse than the original offence. I can guarantee you at the time this happened, there would have been some legislation (1991) in place that would have allowed a prison term for the offender. No one knows if it would have deterred the pos here, but it was only a short time after the original offence that this murder occurred (1993). So it wasn’t a matter of ‘if’ he’d reoffend, but a matter of when and how. Normal people don’t go around stabbing their ex’s boyfriend in the hope to wound or kill him. So yes, it probably would have been another family who lost a loved one, but then again, who’d let their 17 year old son hang around a violent convicted criminal, if appropriate sentencing had been applied?

While it's true that attempted murder is a very difficult thing to prosecute successfully, pleading down to a non-custodial sentence is ludicrous. In the case of Calanca, it meant that he was free to kill Gabe when he should have been in prison. To rub salt into the wound, Calanca's non-parole period of 15 years is a joke. It's not as if there are no aggravating circumstances. Premeditation & planning are massive aggravating circumstances. The counter to the pissweak 15 argument is evidenced by Calanca's continued imprisonment and numerous parole rejections. My counter would be, why didn't they give him the harsh sentence way back when?

It's my opinion that sentencing is about the dollars. The judicial system works out the financial cost of holding a felon in jail, hence the time imposed. There needs a federal enquiry!!

Question: How do Australians know which word should be spoken as a question? I hope this question isn’t offensive to anyone, but I find it fascinating and I can’t figure it out.
@dinamoore15805 жыл бұрын
not sure what this question means, but in some countries they take a tone of a question and some other countries picked up those foreign countries ways of speaking mixing up the english language with other languages. seems like is what htey do coz in some countries they dont have certain words - forgot really what words they dont have.
@SpecialBlanket5 жыл бұрын
@@dinamoore1580 they mean the upwards inflection at the end of a sentence. i too wonder this.

I'm not sure either and I'm Australian ! LOL It's just one of those idiosyncrasies that every country has when speaking their language. I might have to look that up myself!

The father must be very upset as Gabe had darker features and took after him more than any of his other children plus he was his oldest son. It's very sad for all his family. Definitely wouldn't be letting Calanca out. Sociopath for sure
