Frank Skinner, Joan Bakewell and the judges head to Glasgow as 21 competitors capture celebrity sitters including actor John Hannah and paralympian Michael Kerr.
Portrait Artist of the Year is a competition art show aiming to find the best portrait painter of the year.
Each episode features a regional competition and contestants are challenged to produce a portrait of one of three famous sitters.
As the competition goes on, three artists will remain, and these finalists will have their work displayed in the world-famous National Portrait Gallery in London. The winner eventually receives a $10,000 commission to become a permanent part of the British Library!

LOVE this show. I just wish they would show close-ups of all the paintings when they're done.

Me too!!! I feel like that would be worthy of its own hour long show to highlight each artist, their process and final piece. They missed out -the audience missed out on so much from leaving that out! There were so many artists from this series that I’d love to know more about.

iI'm very happy that they changed the show. The first season looked like it wasn't abour art and portraits but rather talking and showing audience. Now (in year 2023) you can see actual portraits being made.

Yeah, the artists are much more the focus. This first season makes it feel like the artists are a necessary evil to have a show in the first place.

I agree, when I saw his painting i thought: well done, but he is gonna loose because he is classically trained and the never choose traditional painting, always the quirky ones that have no likeness. I was pleasantly surprised for once.

@endlessstudent3512 so far, they're ONLY choosing the classically trained painters and no one else. You might prefer that, but I think we've seen enough classical oil painting.

Anyone know if Amanda, the young lady of the 3 finalists, is online somewhere? I’d love to see more of her work! Actually, I’d love to see this series highlight every artists’ final piece…it’s so frustrating that they don’t. I found it to be a bit disrespectful.

Yes, I hate that also. I mean, it would have only taken a few minutes to see all done paintings for 5-10 seconds and do them justice. They are wasting a lot of time during the episode just talking pseudo-intelligent stuff.

I don't understand why the people were told how to Pose it should be there choice
@kristynashley7745
@kristynashley7745 3 жыл бұрын
(I'm a portrait painter) Most paid models or sitters don't choose their poses. Especially if they don't do it often - these people are actors or athletes. Sitting or posing seems easy, but if the sitting period is for 30min to an hour or many hours - its hard to sit through. People who don't normally sit or model for painters won't be able to hold any pose for a considerable time, so most of the poses here are able for them to relax in and sit for longer periods. A smile would be painful to hold for long. Leaning on an arm or turning your head too much could cause a cramp and would mean they would need to take more breaks. Also knowing that they want the painters to interpret their professions or a mood - it is the painters/judges job to pose them not the sitters.
@troytheriot8679
@troytheriot8679 3 жыл бұрын
@@kristynashley7745 Well i paint too but i think if they are able to pick a position themselves they will be relaxed enough to stay in it for a long period of time. I think an artist in a studio can adjust the lighting and get the same effect as if they had posed the sitter themselves.
@Watkinsstudio

Paid models never choose their poses. They are hired to pose by artists, whose pictorial needs take precedence.

I love this series, but in this one I'm totally put off by the way the judges instruct them to pose. The leaning forward in one is just awkward and having the actress sit there with her hands on the arms of the throne-like chair is so stilted it drains any spark of life out of the girl... and the red draperies behind her red hair makes me cringe.

Painting portraits isn't unlike riding a horse and buggy, antiquated and unnecessary. Cameras solved that, as did automobiles. In layman's terms, take a picture and paint an abstract painting.
