At the Day Surgery Unit in Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Shirley has come in to have a stent put into her heart. She's had the procedure done before over ten years ago but needs to have it re-done as she has been having chest pains. Over at the Great North Children's Hospital, bed 27 has welcomed four-year-old Rebecca, who has been brought in by her dad as she has injured her arm at school. Back in the Day Surgery Unit at Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital, 19-year-old Sean needs to have a grommet fitted into his left ear. The last time he had to have this done he was 13, and this is the first time he has been to hospital since he has become an adult. It is all very new to him, and he is nervous about the procedure.
Secret Life of the Hospital Bed is a unique 20-part series where across the 60-minute episodes, fixed-rig cameras tell the story of patients who enter four different hospitals across the UK. The hospitals are The Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, The Queen's Hospital in Romford, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and The Great Northern Children’s Hospital in Newcastle. The circumstances, the ailment, the treatment, the length of stay - everything is personal to the individual involved. But the one constant throughout is the bed.

What you guys need in Canada and the UK are what we have here in the States called Urgent Care. They are the step down from ER's (A&E). The ones all by my house can do x-rays, labwork, prescribe medications. They try to take the stress off of ER's. Much faster too!

I suspect none of them get more than a cursory swipe. The curtains stay up for months on end. In fact, in my entire career on my unit, I never once saw the curtains removed for cleaning. Pretty gross, and its no wonder nosocomial infections are rampant.

Shirley has a blocked artery and needs a stent replaced, but had to wait to have it done? Her current stent is obviously failing because she's been having chest pains. Blocked arteries can lead to heart attacks? How long do you people have to wait for treatment we in America have done almost immediately? I've heard of people waiting months to have bi-pass surgery. If this is the great panacea called "socialized medicine", you can keep it.

America is very fast if u have money and insurance. No insurance u will wait and may not ever get treatment. Canada you wait because it is all paid for by tax dollars. UK is primarily national health service, tax paid, so yes there are waits, and they have some private care u can pay for.
