Portrait Artist of the Year | S02 E03 | Reel Truth Documentaries

Artists in Scotland paint stars such as Spandau Ballet's Gary Kemp. An incredibly close heat means there's a twist in store.
Portrait Artist of the Year is a competition art show aiming to find the best portrait painter of the year.
Each episode features a regional competition and contestants are challenged to produce a portrait of one of three famous sitters.
As the competition goes on, three artists will remain, and these finalists will have their work displayed in the world-famous National Portrait Gallery in London. The winner eventually receives a $10,000 commission to become a permanent part of the British Library!

They picked a winner with Christian Hook but will never understand picking the other artist..her work was not even in the same realm that his was didn't come close to how masterful he paints don't understand why she got through. It didn't seem fair to a couple of the others who seemed to be on the same artistic level that he was ... Oh well :-(

Laura over catherine's - seriously !!! 😏 And surprising fact is, Judges selected Laura's art piece by making an exception to their usual selection criteria of "choosing only one". It should have been an amazing excpetional art to have made that exemption but what we get ?!!!

I hated this episode for exactly that reason. And during the semi-final her painting was a disaster. It is very clear that the only time she can paint is if there is a photo on the canvas over which she applies paint. Not an artist, just a replicator . They guy who won was awesome

Christian's was pure genius. One can only imagine where it could have landed if he had more time and less pressure. This series is too sophisticated for an American audience there'd have to be back-biting, drama, painting hanging upside down with a brush in your nose--the more ridiculous the better.

If Katherine had a better likeness, she may have been the winner. The face was way too round. I, however, was drawn more to Laura's work as it was more atmospheric. And to me Christian's was too much like commercial art, nothing special. All the glum poses are really boring. I hope future series/episodes have more joy and whimsy. Portraits don't have to be serious, as some of the original self portraits have shown throughout the series. And why can't they choose there own angles...where they set their easels, instead of a standard line of site to the subject?

Wow the judges seem to lack all imagination when it comes to choosing pieces. Always these dull colored pieces that are mirror images of the model with a few splashes of paint. Might as well be photoshop filters.
