The fact that a *horse* fell on the man *and* he survived at all in that time period is amazing. He must have been muscular and extremely athletic to have lived through that accident.

I think he had a traumatic brain injury
@Jesterjones907318 күн бұрын
Watched a documentary where a doctor (think he was a neurosurgeon) and historian had a weight that simulated the horse weight drop on a pig carcass to simulate Henry and the result was awful. The on,ply thing that saved Henry from being killed was his armour. They also commented on the observation that Henry ‘was without speech for 2 hours’ was absolutely concerning for a significant head injury. We worry about a few minutes of unconsciousness, 2 hours is very concerning.

Very interesting program and I can’t help but wonder how history might have been influenced by an earlier arrival of antibiotics.
@PackyboyАй бұрын
it might’ve made Henry a little less of a monster, but still at his core he was a true monster, a true narcissist, he came very close to having mary in prison and did have her threaten for her life. A monster.
@Catmom-gl5ntАй бұрын
They have actually had a form of early antibiotics for several millennia. Going back to ancient Egypt, healers proscribed moldy bred for certain ailments, either eaten or applied directly to a wound. This phenomenon arose in virtually every advanced civilization around the globe, including parts of Europe. They didn’t understand why it worked, but recognized it did. The problem of course, is they didn’t know what cultures they were looking for, some mold is harmful, others not effective. It’s actually fascinating if you study ancient diseases and what the ancient world used to fight them. Honey has been used since the first civilizations arose as a form of antibiotic and it does have antibiotic properties. In fact, modern medicine actually still uses it in some dressings, in some cases.

He couldn't control his emotions. His emotions got the best of him so he led him away. Having mental problems such as eating disorders / addictions / bipolar disorder causes the body to deteriorate quickly. Henry, he has a problem with injuries from fighting. This is new knowledge. Thank you very much.

I am in much pain right now because of a infection in my teeth - but I have painkiller, Antibiotika that brings me through the day almost painfree - just imagine what pain, horror etc. Henry must have felt with his leg.....or did they have morphine back in those days? Pain makes mad, pain makes bad and crazy thats one fact. I do not want to imagine to bear this pain all day long
@1ClearwordsАй бұрын
Morphine wasn't developed until the early 1800s.

Milk of the poppy?
@elmienliebenberg9145Ай бұрын
@SpiritGirlSF Your question got me curious, so I looked it up. It seems that they did derive pain medication from poppy plant but there was never a mixture called "milk of poppy". Maybe just a Game of Thrones thing 🤷♀️

They had opiates. Poppy has been used as a pain killer for 8000 years.

I strongly believe that after Henry VIII fell off his horse in that jousting incident, he suffered from brain damage that change him entirely as a person. Made him from bad to worse.

The overeating and lack of exercise would explain for the obesity problem and the problem with the wound never healing. I’ve seen several documentaries that show what his eating habits were, and they suggest that despite the overeating, he may have suffered from malnutrition because he was not fond of eating the vegetables or fruit, thus no vitamins.
@ElizabethMcCormick-s2nАй бұрын

Sounds like frontal lobe damage due to the accident. There are some documented cases of personality change after something like this.

I think Anna of Cleves was done a disservice from history and her portrayal in this program wasn't fair in the least. She was actually pretty in her own way and her docile look covered a very intelligent, long play mind. She totally outmaneuvered Henry at his own game, snubbing him and his 'disguise' at their first meeting which makes me think she totally knew who he was. She ended up becoming one of the richest ladies in England and free to live her life without ever losing her head. Henry even called her 'sister' and they remained friends until his death. He probably even asked her advice on state matters knowing she possessed a wit equal, if not better than his own. Her servants and staff all remembered her as being kind and cheerful and never harsh in manner with them.
