My father was a British MP at Dunkirk, unable to leave the beach until 'every man for himself' was declared.

Let's not forget that an large part of the BEF was able to leave Dunkirk because of fierce fighting and resistance of the French army especially in the pocket of Lille : « These Frenchmen, under the gallant leadership of general Molinié, had for four critical days contained no less than seven German divisions which otherwise could have joined in the assaults on the Dunkirk perimeter. This was a splendid contribution to the escape of their more fortunate comrades of the BEF » - Winston Churchill, The Second World War. vol. II. Their Finest Hour, Cassel & Co., 1949, p. 86 The pocket of Dunkirk equally played an important role. Once again, French soldiers defended valiantly Dunkirk and outskirts. Between 35000 to 40000 French soldiers were captured on the 4th of June when the Germans entered the city. On the other hand certain British regiments were ordered to stay behind and fight to the last bullet and then surrender. This enabled thousands of the BEF to reach Dunkirk and evacuate. One cannot change history and it would be unfair to say that the French army did not pay an important role in allowing the BEF to evacuate from Dunkirk. This is just a question of opinion...

Mustang1984 I've actually been able to download this entire series with exception of one episode. One said unavailable. I was able to get it by going to Google and inquire about the witness to war series and a couple of them came up with ways to buy the episodes but Banijay History came up and once I clicked on it I was able to download 11 of those 12 episodes. Keep looking if you haven't already been able to find it try again and maybe you can find it on Google like I did. It's a freaking great series isn't it! I hope you can find it👍🏼

Who do they get to write these things? 'Wehrmacht' refers to the German armed forces; 'heer' is the army. And how outrageous to say they marched into Poland 'unopposed'.

@phlm9038 Жыл бұрын
@@philipmadhatter4006 Well, the French couldn't defend their country anymore because of the gaps left in the defense after the departure of the British, plus the surrender of Belgium. You might have been told that the French and the Belgians let you down. But they didn't. They were preparing a counter attack which couldn't happen because of the departure of the British. I have always thought that the British soldier was a gentleman wearing a helmet instead of a bowler hat.

@@philipmadhatter4006 The UK declared war on Germany after this latter invaded Poland. The UK declared war on Germany FIRST, after having made sure that the French would do the same. The UK wanted war with Germany, I think so far we can agree. The UK decided to declare war on Germany, nobody forced them. The UK didn't want this war to take place on British soil, did they ? They wanted the war on French soil, and on Belgium soil when the Germans violated Belgium's neutrality. The only way to be allowed to fight on French soil was to get them involved. Plus this is what countries do when they have an alliance. There was a very simple way to avoid the war in 1919, at least in western Europe : allow France to permanently occupy the Rhineland in order to prevent another invasion. But what is done is done, or maybe I should say in that matter what was not done was not done.
