For the Adams Savage problem, I would have recommended a strong old 2-stroke dirt bike engine of 250-300cc. For Jamie Hyneman, it's an airbag from a car that makes Buster fly.

There are so many myths that I would like to see re-tried with technology of today.
@Yvolve4 ай бұрын
It was possible back then, with the right motor and more importantly, propellor. You could get a powerful enough, small enough engine. He just used a fan, not a propellor. As the word implies a propellor propels you. It is shaped to provide thrust. A cooling fan is designed to move a large volume of air, which doesn't mean it provides thrust well. It would be much easier today, especially with the drone motor, but technology in general.
@HappyBeezerStudios4 ай бұрын
Considering the rest of the team were allowed to push, they could've put all the engines into lifting and having a handle on the back, like a floating shopping cart. For fans they obviously need something that can create enough static pressure to prevent the air from flowing back out of the cushion. For propulsion maximum airflow would be better. The blades Adam had on his trimmer would be nice for pressure, but not for airflow. My guess is bigger blades would've helped. Like on these swamp boats with fans the size of a person.

There is some truth in the "jump in a falling elevator" myth; you would clearly _reduce_ the speed that you hit the floor if you jump, and this might make all the difference if you fall from a reasonably low height. It would certainly be worth a try, since it would be at least as bad to stand still.

I always wondered how to survive the elevator fall since I almost experienced it myself. I was stuck inside between 3 and 4 floor with additional floor under ground floor when one out of two cables holding the elevator slipped out and whole cabin suddenly tilted to one side and lost the electricity inside. The screech of the metal still gives me nightmares. Fortunately the suppers got me out. But I keep wondering if I would survive the fall or not or got any serious injuries from this height to this day. Thanks for this video.

Jamie is like ' I don't want to use gunpowder" then proceeds to use a spring over hydraulics or pneumatics (where you can have a higher degree of mechanical accuracy) LOL!
@Yvolve4 ай бұрын
He doesn't want to use gunpowder because you're dropping an elevator. The last thing you want is to add an explosion. Whatever is used to launch Buster, it is going to be destroyed. Why ruin an expensive cylinder when you can just use some old car springs and metal tubes. This is an early season, they didn't have any budget. No sensors on Buster, no sick slow-mo shots and many angles of the fall. That all came later.

There's a fundamental problem with trying to jump before the elevator hits the ground, and it's the same problem i believe you'd have with the ninja deflecting a bullet myth. The thing that hurts you is suddenly coming to a stop, and it makes no difference if that stop is caused by hitting the ground or by jumping, even if you could jump hard enough to cancel out going the ground, you would occur just as much injury doing so as you would from hitting the ground
@Thundermaceaus4 ай бұрын
It's like their elevator guy said. Both you and the elevator are falling at the same speed. So if you jumped and was somehow in the air at impact (ignoring everything else that would also do you harm), you'll still go splat when you hit the ground.
