It amazes me how relaxed and slow-paced this game is. A full hour into it, and Quill has gotten NOWHERE. Just a couple foresters, gatherers, some fishing, a handful of houses. And that's with his judicious use of 10x speed. At this point, I wouldn't even be 2/3rds as far along as he is, since I micromanage the heck out of everything and rarely go faster than 2x speed.

Also, I just realized that the deer are using that tunnel Quill built into the mountain. They must use the same pathfinding AI as the people.

city locations is pretty good, most obvious thing is that your're next to a river for the watermill and civil service bonuses acess to deer, a mountain for observitory. near a lot of forrest so it's easy to defend with longbowmen cities are seperated by a mountain so it is harder for you to lose the first and then immediately lose the 2nd, it also doubles as a chokepoint no wheat lots of iron for some good ol classical age conquest all in all pretty good starting location

You can think of the marketplace like a combination stockpile, but the difference is that the vendor workers bring stuff there. If you have homes in the sphere of influence of the market, then they villagers just go get items from the market to fill up their homes. They don't have to go walk somewhere else further away, or maybe not even walk there and be lacking in some items that could help them. Eg maybe you have all food groups in your village, but a particular 2-3 homes can't access all food groups because they are far away from the source or from a market. Then you get sick people in all those homes when you thought your villagers were all nice and healthy because you provided all food groups.

quarries are land killers. I always hate putting them near my city centre. I usually look for a place with barely enough room to fit the quarry so that I'm not losing good land.

Shawn R well yeah, but filled with what? You'd have to get as much material to fill them with as you got out of them :P I guess you could use dirt, but you'd have to get that from somewhere too. Quill's idea with water is nice; maybe they could be turned into fish farms or something for artificial fish rearing
@theangrychefasmr4434

In the real world? I would fill them with garbage and soil, its gotta go somewhere, the same logic could work in banished, though im not sure anyone actually produces trash :D I like the water idea, but I havent seen a mod like it yet. To be banished friendly, Im assuming some earth is removed when leveling the ground for foundations/farms/roads and it could be enough to fill a quarry given enough time. Banished garbage would be biodegradable, so farming a trash filled quarry would be very fertile in theory. If i sounded like a douche it was accidental :D

I am fairly certain that marketplace workers will redistribute stuff between other storages. Basically, you can have a surplus of food in one end of town, while people are starving in the other end and marketplaces help prevent that. Plus having a broader variety of stuff locally, will keep people happy and healthy.

@adamrules01

Isaac DragonDerp Dwarf fortress was just too micromanaged for me, it got tedious telling a dwarf to tie his own shoe laces and not walk into a pit into his doom. I like the fewer options this game has in this regard.
@WM01129
@WM01129 9 жыл бұрын
adamrules01 Yeah I am a person of micromanage. Which means that I don't entirely hate Dwarf Fortress. But what you're saying is so true. When it was 1 or 2 dwarfs it was all fine until the numbers adds up and you have to look for everyone until you say "Fuck it" and leave your fort into their doom and start a new smaller game. Banished however, didn't had any of these elements in their game.
@caphalor08
@caphalor08 9 жыл бұрын
i usually build up tiny fortresses within my fortress (basically barracks with an entire supportive structure) with dwarves assigned to workshops and rooms, specific stockpile-workshop links and specific doors. so basically i keep it small and simple in a 150 dwarf fortress and when a siege hits, odds are they'll only conquer one or two, not all five. also a ton of fun to reclaim btw.

also, this game has a default priority system that is pretty lame. if you tell everyone to remove resources, and put down a building to be built. they will spend forever removing all this crap even if its far away from your city, before carrying supplies to the built site (atleast at launch, havent played any patches). so being careful with your resource removal orders early on is very key to a strong start.

One big problem in this game is that there's no immigration/migration mechanic. If you run out of space to build new houses, your people just stop making babies and allow their lineage to die out. Then there's suddenly not enough woodcutters and tailors and everyone freezes. That's some stupid shit. In reality, if there's currently not enough room in a city, people migrate to other cities. But in the case of Banished, obviously there ARE no other cities to go to. But maybe it's logical to assume that by the time your colony has outgrown the map, there would already be other smaller colonies established nearby looking for much needed new blood to get them going.

@pershop4950
@pershop4950 3 жыл бұрын
I was just thinking about this as well. If Banished had some economic missions or other mission as a kind of campaign map as well as tutorial (start small and slow then build up), I think it would have gained more traction because then there wouldn't be a group of people complaining about how hard it was and making the ratings go down. Not to mention, there are a subset of players who can handle sandbox and open-ended games. They will play 100s and 1000s of hours if they like it. Others want a campaign of sorts to feel like they are making progress and eventually finishing the game, so they can move on to other games.

a grid system allows easy modding, and is also good because trying to position a building perfectly without a grid is annoying as heck, like in simcity when you make the roads BARELY the wrong size, or you are a millimeter off of building a massive mine. and it also has a bit of nostalgia for the old city building games.

Fredrik Dunge Free rotation is horrible for games like these. It messes up pathfinding very badly and makes the cities look terrible in the end. Just look at Guild 2 and such. Edit: And it has already been tried for many, many games and failed. So it has nothing to do with "Durr in 2014..."

@FlightofCrows
@FlightofCrows 9 жыл бұрын
Because there wasn't much challenge or replay value. Once you figured out how to balance everything and won all the achievements... well that was it. Everything you could build was practical in nature. No monuments. No wars. No story-line. No struggle. Just balance everything until you fill up the map, and you're done- game over, bro.
@FlightofCrows
@FlightofCrows 9 жыл бұрын
Not to say that the game is bad- it does what it is meant to do masterfully. It just could have benefited from some ambition. More varied map varieties, a story mode, win scenarios, combat, competition, interaction between multiple maps, monuments, scenic items, etc. There were plenty of ways in which its lifespan could have been drastically increased. But the developer was ready to move on. So he did.

Tools are a finite resource and therefore SHOULD NOT be sold, there is a very good document on this posted. They're very different games, but I would buy Anno first. It has a lot more content. For perspective; I love city building games and got 400 hours out of Anno 2070, while only a mere 20 hours out of Banished. The main problem with Banished is that there is one recipe for success, and once you figure it out the game is dead simple. There's also no conflict in Banished, so the only danger is natural disasters which you can't really control or plan around. They're still both good games. Hope this helped.

***** i got bored of anno 2070 in two days. i still like banished. both take a while to build up. both have time-warping (going faster or slower) but anno 2070 can only go at double speed and is still stupidly slow-paced, while banished can be played slow or fast. anno 2070 has more content but is dlc-walled, the dlc itself costing $44 and the game being $40, grand total of $84, while banished is merely $15. on the technical side of things, banished is DRM-free, while anno 2070 has u-play, and if you buy it on steam you are out of luck, unless you do a unnecessarily complex fix to actually play it without uplay crashing when it tries to launch anno. basically, Banished > Anno 2070.

Lets start with 2 herbalists, cause they are really good LOL. I had to stop watching after that :) You don't need any herbalists whatsoever.
