I lived my life up to 5 years ago as a musical illiterate. Then, I taught myself to play the Scottish Bagpipes with youtube. I followed up with Scottish smallpipes,, Irish tin whistle, Native American flute, and the Irish Low D whistle. I still play bagpipes at no charge for funerals. But, my focus for the past year has been the Low D whistle. Yesterday, I ordered a banjo and I plan to follow your youtube videos. I am a survivor of colon and rectal cancer by radical surgy. I have suffered total kidney failure, followed by 2 years of dialysis treatments and a kidney transplant 10 years ago. Life ain't over til it's over. I am 75 years old.

The amount of videos on youtube with `beginner clawhammer banjo` headings that then immediately start talking shit about majors minors sevenths and then rattle through a list of things to do is depressing. Bought my banjo as a new years resolution and gave up 3 days in. Just picked it up, found this CLEAR and helpful guide, and im learning by the hour. THANK YOU from a hilltop in Cumbria, northern England. Appreciate your clear, well paced tuition.

I used to avoid online lessons like this because the teachers always felt scary or condescending. I know that's weird to say because they couldn't actually talk to me but that's how it felt. But you seem so friendly, it feels like I'm getting this lesson from an old friend! It's very encouraging.

I play Earl Scruggs finger style and have always loved the old time original mountain frailing style. Also play finger style Latin and classical guitar as well as jazz, blues, rock and I'm from Shreveport and know the great James Burton so of course country chicken picking. Oh, bass and keyboard. You know how musicians are! Took almost sixty years to accumulate all of that. Lived in Mississippi for ten years for work. Played with many old black blues men and God knows I learned a lot. Everything from tone and soul to keeping a razor in my sock and a .32 caliber revolver in my watch pocket. Keep playing young lady. Make people smile and feel better. It's what we do.

Love this! I can't play the banjo (I don't own one) but I love the sound from when I first heard Shirley Temple singing a song with Bill Bojangles in a movie from the thirties. That was over 60 years ago. Then as an adult in the seventies I heard Doc Watson singing "A Frog went a -Courting on a Summers Day". I knew the words from when I was a kid but I'd never heard of Doc Watson nor the tune he was singing to his banjo playing; I was "blown away" and became an instant Doc Watson fan. I love the sound of the banjo. I'm almost inspired to go and purchase a banjo from the local music shop in Katoomba. Thank you for posting this. As an aside I love the Saviour too.

I find fingerpicking easier because I have terrible rhythm so this clawhammer is going to take a while to feel natural [the "1 2 and" feels awkward to me; I'm definitely more comfortable with evenly-spaced actions]. Excellent video as I just bought my first banjo recently, coming from the guitar world. And the tip about muting the sound is fantastic [I haven't seen it elsewhere]: one of my worries was that I was making too much noise for those around me. May the Lord watch over you as well.

This lesson was helpful to me. Ive had the banjo 2 weeks, and have been playing (give or take) about 6 hours a day with it. Got the rhythm down (not smooth), you can feel it in your body. Im using a metronome at 50 BPM (slow). So far what I've learned, the most important thing is to make sure you strike the notes correctly. Ive been trying to do the rhythm from string 3, brush, thumb.
@PHIL-ts8si
@PHIL-ts8si 3 жыл бұрын
I just found, that, its a bit easier to be aware of your hand at 50 bpm to be sure your not flicking or twisting or boinking. Also, i was able to figure out to get to that pesky 4th string, you can slide your index finger ever so slightly towards the bottom of the banjo so your thumb can go home. Im bursting with excitement as i begin this new endeavor in my life

Such a great lesson! Using your tips was so helpful. The timing was a bit tricky for me at first, so here’s how I managed to get it right. (I think I’m a slow learner, so here’s to helping anyone who needs extra help, like I did!!!) I set a metronome to 110 beats per minute, and started with counting 1,2,3,4 timing that you suggested, simply going on string 1, Brush, 1, Brush, for each count. Did that for about 15 minutes, with a couple brain-refresh-breaks in between. That setup the rhythm in my brain, and was easy for me to get used to. (Not overly complicated!) Then after that was feeling natural, I added the “and” between 2 and 3, and I can feel it! So quick, and I can feel the beat and syncopation happening. (I’ve slowly increased the BPM to around 140 now and loving it!!!) Thank you, Lemonade Lady! :) Five stars!

I kinda feel sad that I found your video a little too late. I'm 70+ and want to deploy clawhammer to my acoustic guitar in which I'm just about an advanced beginner. But let me try out your lesson again and again and see if can cross the beginner level. Thanks a lot, dear❤

Hey thanks! It’s tough to make the “perfect” video and I figured it was already long enough. I have over 1K videos on my channel and I’m playing lots and lots of banjo. Have fun.
