As my old preacher used to say: "Now, if that don't light yer fire, then your wood is WET!!" These guys didn't have a blueprint, or anyone to copy - they just went out there and did it. (Graves was amazing, by the way!)

I saw Earl Scruggs in concert with Vassar Clements and it was on of the best concerts I had ever seen, and everyone else I went with agreed, and we had seen most of the great rock bands of the 60's and 70's.

This is a great gospel tune by Lester Flatt, Earl Scruggs and their Foggy Mountain boys. All of these men were true masters of their craft, and the genuiness of their faith in our savior shines so brightly in this performance. It is such a blessing to know we are free from the chains of sin and that we can "Cry Holy Unto the Lord!"

Folks, this is the sound of REAL music...Totally untrained voices, singing what they feel, and singing it straight from the heart. Cannot get more authentic Americana than this. If you want to know what kind of simple, respectful people we USED to have in this country (the ones who built it last century), you're lookin at 'em. Honest as the day is long. Wouldn't dare catch one goin through a door held open for 'em without saying "thank you." God help us, when they are all gone.

Well, listen to that! Real musicians who actually knew how to harmonize and play their instuments. Damn, that is refreshing. And, listen to Uncle Josh! Wow! That's Dobro the way it was meant to be played. Gotta tell ya, their's quite a number of so-called musicians today that are in serious need of music lessons from the late Uncle Josh! Serious need, indeed!

Joe Stead:First, thanks for posting and sharing this particular video. Watching it now. Hearing this classic Carter Family song. Preformed by Flatt and Scruggs. With it's hopeful and inspirational message. You feel the emotion there. When Flatt and Scruggs recorded this same song(on the 1961 Carter Family Song Album) the title then was "On The Rock Where Moses Stood." Once again, thanks for posting and sharing this awesome video.

I wish all the modern so-called Resophonic players will notice that a Dobro can be played without a capo on songs in A & B etc. Most modern players only know to play some senseless scale that never even hints at the melody. Thank you Uncle Josh for playing it like you did.

to ovaltine52: I agree that's Dobro done right. I've talked with 2 people who were NOT partial to Uncle Josh's style, but they are progressive, and they must NOT have heard much of Josh Graves. If they had, they would realize Josh's great talent and style and they would be eating crow right now. Josh was the best and he always will be.

An early influence for Earl Scruggs and Don Reno would have been DeWitt" Snuffy "Jenkins, a banjo player and toby comic. He along with Homer "Pappy " Sherril and "Greasy" Medlin worked with Byron Parker who was Bill and Charlie Monroe's" Hired Hand" before starting his own group in the late 1930's.

@supersaiyanjesus Yes, there are a few top groups playing today on non-mainstream media, but in my biased view they are ones that pretty much avoid rock influence. However, as Earl Scruggs demonstrates here, he put forth something above and beyond the offerings of all of the other excellent banjo players that have followed since, and this fact transcends any simple consideration of reputation.
