Thanks for the useful tips, Nick. One thing I might add about finding the depth is the I-bobber or e-bobber which transmits images below the surface to your smart phone. It's like a fishfinder on a boat but built into a bobber that you cast. I think they sell for about $100 or so. There are videos of them on youtube.

Thanks for the tips. I really want to catch a bass... I've never caught a fish in my life, and learning all the gear and techniques is pretty intimidating. I don't know any other fishermen in my area, so I'm glad I found your vids. I'm taking a trip in a few days. Hope to catch by first. :)

Ok quick question, in my area we have gar and catfish that I primarily fish for. Now watching this video it seems u get a hit u immediately set the hook not to miss your chance. My buddy says gar give a big hit n wait. So off my backyard that's What I see, I get a hit and wait 20 minutes, so the gar hopefully swallows the hook and I hopefully set it. Well whether I wait 20 minutes or set as fast as I can I don't seem to get anything. Even went to smaller hooks. Looking for advice here. Fyi I run 3-6 rods so holding each isn't practicable. Also I use usually use a 4-2 gamakatsu octopus hook. Any suggestions. I fish for gar or cat fish. Honestly anything that bites. I do catch n release n want to just catch anything worth a picture and a long story to tell.

@10tress10 I don't have a boat either. One of my set ups is a 6 and half ugly stick medium heavy rod,with open face Abu Garcia reel with EZ cast spider line. Let me tell ya,boaters hate me when I'm around because from shore i can pretty much fish where they are at. If that helps you any.

Sounds like your line is twisted up badly. If its the original line that came on the reel, replace it with new. If not, check some of the vids on getting rid of line twist.

are you using a bait caster or an open cast reel? Im guessing an open cast by the way you said you hold your line. If it is. it most likely happens for 1-2 reasons. you either have way to much line on or to big of line on or both. try putting less on and if that doesn't stop then i suggest getting a small lb test line to put on it.

yeah man it sounds like you should try a circle hook. I honestly dont like them, i just like setting the hook but it takes the quess work out of it and some people really benifit from using them.

is it smarter to use orange/yellow floats rather than red/white floats? I'm asking cause it seems like a fish could spot the orange ones better

I suspect the cat is smelling the scent of fish on his gear. Even if not hungry, something like that will surely get the curiosity up. My dog does the same thing (with a 135lb dog, we don't have a cat). He's got to investigate when I'm messing with my fishing gear.

Good tips overall, but I've never understood the notion of carrying extra line. My reels hold 110 yards (330 feet) of line, while I rarely cast more than about 100 feet. With that, I could lose every inch of line in the water three times before running out. Just not going to happen in any one fishing day. By the way, for fishing with bait, I use baitholder hooks rather than circle hooks.

I have no clue on how to use the rod without getting a rat nest of fishing line all tangeld up because if there is no tension then line goes everywhere... i had to restring my rod so many times because this reel thing sucks. you flip the bar hold the line with trigger finger and then cast and drop the bar then reel in but so much line goes everywhere that its just a mess... ugh
