The premise of the notes going back and forward is based on bank robbers passing notes so as not draw attention/security to the robbery. The humour is in them continuing to communicate using the medium throughout their altercation.

As an English person I find this hilarious. Writing the notes is the comedic element of the sketch, the fact they're not talking. That's the whole point of it. If they'd stopped writing the notes, there wouldn't have been any point to the sketch anymore.
@abbiecorcoran60063 жыл бұрын
you did miss the point of it ngl, the note passing is an actual thing robbers used to use to not draw attention to what’s going on, so there was a point to it. and The glass plays on the fact that it’s always like that in post offices and stuff when trying to talk to the person working there, you always have to squeeze everything through the gap and sometimes forget there’s glass there, its common things like that , that people can relate to making it more even more funny , because if they was just talking to each other face to face with no act in between it would be boring

The supreme irony is that I am not Scottish, never been to The Isle Of Skye, and am not overly keen on the natives who tend to be somewhat restless..:) However, I AM an Englishman from South East London/North Kent who loves "The Skye Boat Song"....hence the nomenclature..haha

I remember those turbans. Worn by old ladies in the late 60s, early 70s. They are writing notes because sometimes that's how robbers used to make a threat without broadcasting it to the rest of the room back in the day. I have to say, I've seen much funnier Morecambe and Wise. Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest, sheriff of Nottingham in the Midlands, not the North. Then again, virtually everywhere is North where you live!

I can't remember if you've ever reacted to any Kenny Everett comedy sketches. If not you should take a look....his Reg Prescott DIY sketches are excellent for characterisation and slapstick comedy, and please look at his many other characters. He was a comic genius who was always at odds with the establishment, and he started his career as a disc jockey on pirate radio in the 1960s.

I think that famously, at least in movies, bank robbery pass an initial note in order to limit attention to the robbery. The comedy is in a reply also on a note. The absurdity continues with the notes going back and forth. It's not that funny now really, but I at least appreciate and understand it. I've never seen the sketch before and I'm not a big Morcambe and Wise fan. I would expect my children not to get it though.
