Rest assured Felipe that Britain is still the same. The Boer war vets felt the First War generation were soft ,as did they in their turn doubt the Second War men.I remember people doubting we could recapture the Falklands.Or fight in Helmand.If its needed I know my children's generation will be just as brave as ever.Those British traits never change.

The most remarkable British story is RAF officer Flight-Lieutenant John Quinton DFC, who died in a mid-air collision in 1951. He gave away the only parachute he had available to a 16 year old air cadet on the aircraft and got him to jump, the cadet was the only survivor.

I know I will be regarded as biased but I really believe that this island has a special character when truly up against the odds , sometimes I have my doubts when I look at the younger generation but ultimately I still have faith that it's still there deep down. The bravery and brilliance of the British male in combat for a millennia is unsurpassed. Ps There have been many very brave women as well but some of the stuff that the British male has achieved would be almost too fanciful for Hollywood , my God we do produce Heroism that is awe inspiring, long may that continue when needed.

For me the true crime is that these kind of documentaries aren't shown in our schools. Just imagine what young men and women would get out of seeing things like this. The phrase "role model" is easily thrown around these days, but these men showed great courage, fantastic character, unbelievable belief in themselves and each other and they showed ultimate commitment too a cause. They would inspire thousands of little school children. True heroes

Absolutely spot on. The young have not been allowed to know how great our nation has been. To realise what we have achieved and how it was won. It is understandable then that they do not know what we are capable of and so often just look for the easy way out. It is part of our heritage and we should never be ashamed to let people be rightly proud to be British. True Heros and real role models should be taught in all schools along with our own nations history. .

I'm in the UK & I'd never heard of this raid until I saw this Clarkson doc a few years ago. These guys were the forerunners of the SAS and other special forces. These days the special forces extended the concept of giving autonomy to the individuals and small teams.

Please, in your own time, watch the the full documentary, which is 58 minutes long, and tells how the raid was planned and carried out in fascinating detail.

Read this story when I was around 11 in the mid '50s in " The Boys book of V.C Heroes " . I live in Torbay and have done pleasure cruises on those little boats but never realized they were used in this raid . Devon and Cornwall for your next holiday Felipe ? Food for thought . I have come across a couple of American’s responding to this and they found it unbelievable that this raid could be conceived and executed A Marine even responded to the full documentary and confirmed it is considered the “Greatest Raid of All” in military circles

Felipe, your have nailed it! The reason that Britain was so successful. In the early years we fought alone against Germany, France capitulated, and it was only 20 miles or so from our shores ! Nevertheless, we were the victors, through sheer determination and fight spirit. and in spite of everything else, it is still the irrepressible British spirit, when called upon.

It is hard to remember what a desperate time of the war this was, March 1942. Germany was still in the ascendant smashing through the Red Army towards Moscow. Rommel had counter attacked in North Africa. The US although now in the war was only just gearing up, still reeling from Pearl Harbour and the Philippines were about to fall. The Japanese were running rampant in the Far East, Singapore surrendering in Feb, and were now pushing up the length of Burma, Rangoon being evacuated. Many peoples memories of the war involve the time of Allied dominance in the air and at sea - but that was still to come - these were desperate times and pretty desperate measures seemed called for. You really must watch the Arnhem VC of Robert Henry Cain - and the kicker at the end!

clarkson did the best version of the raid so glad you used it, i have no problem you yanks would have had the balls to do it also but hearing it for any service men from any country is quite unbelievable, i have seen this vid on too many times to count and it still makes me feel so proud and inadequate of what they had done balls of steel is an understatement

I remember when I was a child in the 60s, I'm 63 now. (in the days boys got Annuals for Christmas) reading about this raid in the Victor Annual around 1965,66. Looking back to those Annuals they where like the old black and white historical movies you watched as a child a great source of information and learning for young people. There is so many facts historical, geographical facts and general knowledge etc that I got from these boys Comic Annuals. I remember learning about the Kracatoa eruption of the 1880s near Jav etc. There was also a character called Braddock VC, an RAF pilot, probably modeled on Guy Gibson. Fantastic source of Knowledge that unfortunately the young of today dont have or not interested in. P.s does anybody remember Alf Tupper the tough of the track. Just googled the Victor Annual, Raid on St Nazaire and sure enough it was in the 1964 Annual.

If I remember correctly I read this story in my 1969 Boys World annual. My father in law (a WW2 vet) said, if you wrap them all in cotton wool, one of them will choke on it

The Raid at St Nazaire was in fact well known to all Americans. In fact there are at least four movies made in America of this event including many others that made mention of it.

@@pjmoseley243 - Attack On The Iron Coast (1967) is virtually a copy of the raid with names changed, and an American star (Lloyd Bridges) contrived to lead it as a 'Canadian'. Someone told me about another film, Gift Horse (1952) based on the Campbeltown's story with Trevor Howard as the lead, which I have seen but the raid is at the end and almost incidental. A search has also yielded Glory At Sea (also 1952), which I don't know at all.

I agree entirely, National service would provide answer to many social problems While strengthening a countries ability to defend its values. Further, in Britain we have forces cadet venues, where schoolkids can volunteer, Camping, orienteering, drill, Weapons proficiency, And survival skills. Parents need to volunteer their kids for these activities.

If you want to look at something that not many know about ( except the USN personal and American pilots that had to use the carriers ) . Look up " The forgotten fleet " , The British fleet in the pacific " . It's about a British , Australian and New Zealand fleet of approximately 200+ ships covering the American fleets because the British fleets aircraft carriers had armoured decking so could take hits from the Japanese kamikaze so protecting the American fleets while they attacked islands full of japanese on their way to Japan

The cockleshell heroes who kayaked into enemy port and mined one was Blondie Hasler who survived the raid and the war and went on be a World class yachtsman another survived and worked on the Buses in East London and Essex and he was pointed out to once a bus a lovely as normal as you or I but underneath that cheerful exterior must be a man of steel resolve....

The other programme Jeremy refers to (For Valour) was about his father-in-law, Robert Cain VC, who won his Victoria Cross at the battle of Arnhem (for "a bridge too far") in September 1944. I second Catherine's recommendation to do a video reaction to that documentary as well.

@@tonypate9174 - yes, I felt the same way. It did occur to me that Felipe may have been so rapt by this that there was a lack of a visible reaction, so it had to be cut. Usually, it's the French or the Germans that are like deer caught in the headlights when confronted by British audacity. That, and burning down the White House in 1814. That's why the Americans sued for peace and have been secretly working for us ever since ;-)

We visited Pegasus Bridge and the Merville Battery a couple of years ago and that has a very similar feel. I really believe you need to go to these places and stand and realise what these guys did....This documentery should be part of the School curriculam...as a side noteI really think the contributions to the Normandy Landings made by the Canadians has been largley overlooked by the media...it's very apparent how well they fought when you go there yet you never hear about it

I don’t know if you have been told but they made a movie about this raid just after the war, you could find it I believe on Google. When it, the bomb didn’t immediately detonate that was the drama. If you wanted another story the book a the Neimeghan Bridge or operation “Market Garden” immortalised in the boo”A Bridge Too Far” is really worth a read, I think the author took about 4 year to research and interview survivors and then write the book so they could then make the movie. I know that you have already watched the WWI documentary They Shall Never Grow Old. One of the astonishing things about that was the commitment from those who served, and who went through so much. In the post-war interviews they all seemed to say that they were glad that they had served and would do it again if needed. Do we still have that? Maybe.

Hi Felipe the armed forces do's not want national service its a waste of resources members of the armed forces are highly trained.With national service you get trained to a base level you can march clean yourself and equipment shot basic fighting.A lot of jobs in the forces are highly trained after the basics are done and the army wants to keep people a lot of money has been spent on for as many years as it can.Some countrys do a from of civilian service which would be better

I understand your comment about the amount of "average" men today who would fit into the shoes of WW2 men.The difference may have been that people had seen how Germany had rolled over most of Europe and was planning to do the same to Britain hence the feeling of do or die. Today our wars are smaller thank god and if WW3 were to happen in the form of a nuclear conflict there would not be the time to enlist never mind fight . The concept of the character of todays youth meeting the standards of old would only be tested in a conventional war with conscription. I do wonder if the new P.C. youth would join the establishment in the face of a conventional war where so many would appear to protest ANY war ,only time and events will tell.

I believe that the British Commandos trained the first US Ranger unit in WW2, as they apparently carried out similar roles.

Some 50 U.S. Rangers were taken on the ill fated raid at the French port of Dieppe "operation jubilee "5,000 Canadians 1,000 British Army and Royal Marines Commandos and 50 Rangers.

Great video Felipe, on one of Clarkson's best documentaries. Just to put the SAS into context, with regard to your question, this is from the National Army Museum website: "The Special Air Service (SAS) has its origins in the North African desert. It was formed as 62 Commando in July 1941 to undertake small-scale raids behind enemy lines. This drew its men from No 7 Commando and also operated under the title L Detachment, Special Air Service Brigade." Also, when Churchill ordered the formation of airborne forces, the Army had a look to see what it already had in the box that could be quickly converted, and saw that the second battalion of the SAS (known as No 11 Commando Special Air Service) was undergoing parachute training, so a bit of badge engineering turned them into the 1st Battalion of the Parachute Regiment. More recently, that battalion was redesignated as a 'Ranger' battalion to support SAS operations for when they require more backup, so they've almost gone full circle.

Interesting reflection, but forget the National Service bit. The best soldiers are those who want to be there (in the thick of it). Besides, the taxpayer has enough to contend with, without having pay for uniforms for people who don't want to be in them and only for a year or so.

It's a shame so much of the story has been cut for your video, especially when they were captured and the next day the boat had not exploded and when it had alot of german "souvenir collectors" on the boat and the troops were being interrogated it finally blew.

The way war is 'fought' these days is completely different. I guess 4 or 5 long range but accurate missiles could destroy the dock gates now. There'd be no need to send in 600+ men to do the job 'hands on'

One of the problems with Omaha Beach on D-Day was that the preliminary bombing fell too far inland in an effort to avoid dropping bombs on the invasion fleet, and the rocket barrage fell short into the sea. The German defences were completely untouched when troops started their landing.

That statistic on the accuracy of bombing is absurd, it sounds like a meaningless average, as at the start of the war many raids at night did not get within 5 miles of the target, by the end of the war, they could drop bombs within 70 feet. The Tallboys and Grand Slams dropped in daylight were very accurate due to their size and spin, which reduced the effect of the wind. At the time of the raid, bombing was hopeless, 3 years later the situation was better. I have seen the memorial to the raid in Falmouth Harbour, it has been moved, it is now an engraved rock and stars in the pavement near one of the ferry quays, it's nice if a little small.
