As someone who recently left McKinsey, being on the beach now, essentially means your at HIGH risk of getting concerns for underutilization. They have aggressively cut anyone not performing or not consistently staff, the brand was diluted they over hired and there is not enough engagements (projects) to go around, it’s not a great look. You’re not going to get credit for beach work, no one cares. The new simplified staffing model also doesn’t help people get staffed on projects they are passionate about. It’s still a great company but not glamorous. They also stopped a lot of extra travel, chances for international projects, etc.

Excellent interview. I have no plans on banking, consulting, or PE because it's outside the realm of possibilities at this point in my life, but I love learning about the career paths of others, especially in "prestigious" finance.

Really enjoyed the video! Any advice for someone with international IB experience? I was at a boutique, focussed on financial sponsors advising growth stage startups on VC/PE capital raises. Moving back to the US next month (I've worked in the US for about 2yrs in supply chain consulting in healthcare back in 2020 before pivoting to IB in India). Goal is to get into IB in North America.

And yes most partners do tend to specialize in industry and then also by type of project. Like a partner that works in banking or life sciences. Most people belong to a practice at some point. Once you are an associate or engagement management level (McKinsey) they tend to staff you more into what your past experience has been, some people may also focus more on technology implementation projects, digital transformation, or even growth strategy in new countries (business building)

get into the best college possible, ideally a target school and work at boutique banks for internships before sophomore winter / spring when junior summer internship kicks in. join the best business organizations on campus so your peers can help you for free. but also enjoy your time in hs and don't worry so much about career stuff right now

there is not 'imposter syndrome'... consultants need to exist, because consulting is so simple as an ex-industry Executive working as partner at an MBB and now just doing business with his old industry friends (and of course sharing profits from extravagant fees)

Is baird even considered IB? Both baird and JPM are bottom banks. 10 years ago JPM was good but the talent sucks there now

i'm not saying jpm is #1 and it's behind MS and GS in terms of top bulge brackets. i'd also take many top elite boutiques over jpm. but JPM does have some groups that are very good like M&A and healthcare, and most of its other groups like lev fin, consumer, industrials, etc. are very solid even if they're not always the best. lots of really great exits out of jpm. re baird i'm not saying it's a top bank but the fact that you had to ask just shows u really don't know much about the industry. if u ever worked in banking you'll hear about a wide range of banks not just at the top but the smaller ones as well
