Article ~Concern for women's safety or political image The DMK government has chosen to make existing laws more rigid as a rape case spotlighted in the premises of Anna University, Chennai. The criticism of the opposition was the major reason for the strictness of the laws in order to save the party's image. The government has chosen to implement the laws based on theory rather than any empirical evidence. To show the concerrn over women right , DMK regime has decided to amend the law and make it more strict which deter the criminal to do such offence . the theory on which they are making amendemnet is not add up . Crux of today's editorial- Any severe crime occuring raises a question on the government and creates a bad impact on the political issues which in turn leads to making of existing laws more stringent which is just an reflex action of that particular incident . Due to these incidents the government decides to amend the rules by enhancing the period of jail imprisonment in order to mitigate the number of cases of crimes . But this belief is not founded on the basis of any empirical evidence, it's just to show the administration's concern over the women's safety. This doesn't mean that these amendments are unreasonable . Infact death penalty has been introduced for the cases of acid attacks , so these rules helps in ensuring women's safety too. So overcoming the scenario of the impartial investigation and risisting pressure, effectively implementing existing laws are more crucial and even making workplaces, public places and homes safer for women leads to their safety than making the laws more strict . The recurring sexual offences and violence are a grim reminder that only enhancing the quantum of stringent punishment will not deter the perpetrators from committing serious offences.
