@acadette1 How about WAR? Until the philosophy that holds one race superior, and another inferior, is totally and finally abandoned, everywhere is WAR. I expected that song to be banned not only in Jamaica, but globally. It's a riveting song which tugs at the visceral sinews of the humanitarian, and begs for fairness on a level playing field. The song says that the colour of a man's skin should be of no more significance than the colour of his eyes, and until the basic human rights have been guaranteed to all, everywhere will be WAR.

If you are interested, I can tell you that in 1980, June 27, Friday at 9 pm, I was in Milan for Bob's concert in front of 100,000 people. I saw that evening boys and girls from Eritrea, Somalia and Ethiopia dancing and hugging each other throughout the concert while their countries had been at war for 30 years. In my opinion this was the true strength of Bob's music and lyrics. This is his true legacy. The strength of uniting real, right people. We also knew that in Jamaica he helped 2,500 families financially and in this regard I know for sure that in Italy, at the end of his concerts he was paid in cash and Bob gave the management to his entire group, almost as if money for Him was a dirty thing. This was Robert Nesta Marley. Also that summer he already knew he was going to die as ''Family Man'' Barrett (a person of extraordinary kindness and the greatest bass player in the history of music) told me that night. I was one of the very few people who at that time spread the Roots Rasta Reggae Music in Italy. In every corner of our planet you will find something that refers to Bob, even in the most remote places. Bob has done his job and today he is at JAH's side. JAH guide

Give thanks for sharing your knowledge. There were many more Bob Marley and the Wailers tunes that were banned too. Just like how they banned other rastafarian artists songs such as, Exodus and the Wailers song "Babylon Kingdom", and" It Won't Come Easy." Nuh even talk bout Peter Tosh, Jah know. The shitstem don't want the people to know the truth, so they banned the Rastaman dem tunes especially back in the day. From then til now, if they don't want your music to play on the radio, it will never be played. The biggest threats to the establishment, you'd never know their names or their music if it weren't for foreign people pushing the music. Bob Marley and several others were categorized as "dutty Rasta bwoy" and other slanderous names, and it's when the English and European people who love vintage roots reggae gave these singers the love and made them big then our fellow Jamaicans jumped on the band wagon. We should've been the ones to support our own first, sad. Long time dem a fight gainst Rasta.

Not one of Bob Marley's songs was officially banned in Jamaica!! But certain early Marley songs didn't get enough airplay on Jamaican radio! But people played the records regardless and Marley performed the songs at live concerts! Only South Africa banned certain music and not necessarily Bob's music! However, they did sabotage some of his music by defacing the vinyl records, so that people could not read the titles of the songs, and they also scratched and etched the records, so that they skipped and jumped when South African music fans played the records on a turntable and the music could not be listened to in any sensible sequence! 43 years after his , all Bob Marley songs and recordings are at our disposal! A great legacy indeed! 👊🏾🇳🇬👊🏾🇳🇬!!

Feh….not getting played on the radio is not UNIVERSAL ban….if u want tawk bout REAL BAN, tawt bout n Walter Rodney….Ja had 2 radio stations bk in the day….in the 70s, only Barry G played our home grown music…he had a couple hours in the evening…JBC is government owned…RJR was privately owned…all the radio personalities were into foreign music…even to the extent of affecting their version of an American accent…wen RJR wouldn’t play THE WAILERS first 45s, it is rumoured, (wink) dat Bob went to the station with a pickaxe handle (san the blade), lock di DJ in the booth n wouldn’t let him out till dem played the record…everybody revising Bob’s history…even him wouldn’t recognise all a wat has been said about him….Jamaica back den was use to music picked up from the SOUTHERN STATES OF AMERICA….dats y Country n Western was popular n singers like Willie Nelson n Johnny Cash spent so much time down dere….legacy of our listening to Skeeter Davis, Patsy Cline etc….n of course SOUND SYSTEMS ruled….n the first ones were affiliated with the few Recording Studios at dat time…so their records were played…THE REAL disgrace that should b highlighted is what was done to the STEPPIN’ RAZOR, THE GREAT PETER TOSH…his militancy saw him abused by the police…one such encounter, after the regular arresting of him for advocating the FREE smoking of GANJA, SAW HIM BEATEN SO BADLY AT HALF WAY TREE POLICE STATION, he ended up with a fractured skull….n see, LEGALISE IT , i.e. GANJA is now a reality in many countries….some of us STILL TRYING TO GET HIS POSSESSION OF WEED arrest record espunged…NOW HE, is n was the REAL REVOLUTIONARY….btw, did u get ur info mostly from the BBC…mmmmmm…..Peter’s songs have ALWAYS been militant…FIGHTING AGAINST APARTHEID, EQUAL RIGHTS N JUSTICE, I AM THAT I AM…Peter NEVER compromised…never bowed…his album NUCLEAR WAR was ahead of the time…record labels liked Bob’s style because it wasn’t challenging….Peter sang it n lived it, MILITANCY….crossover audiences liked Bob because dem could smoke dem weed n relax to the laidback melody….Peter’s LYRICS came thru over di melody n ‘spoilt’ dem ‘high’…. I'm not in this world To live up to your expectations Neither are you here to live up to mine, yeah I don't owe no one No obligation No, I don't mean none So everything is fine, fine I said, I am that I am I am, I am, I am I am that I am I am, I am, I am I am that I am I am, I am, I am I am that I am I am, I am, I am Don't underestimate My ability Don't define my character Don't belittle my authority It's time you recognized my quality I am that I am…

BBC website, am sure…curiously, the rebuttal to nuff weh him post somehow not showing….since u r 66yrs young , n if u grew up in Ja during the formative years of OUR music, u should remember that radio play was awash with foreign music…Country n Western had been popular from mi a likkle pickney…Skeeter Davis, Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves etal ….bk den, popular singers aped American music genres…memba the group Blues Busters?…n of course the few studios funnelled their 45s via sound system….1970s, with jus JBC n RJR, yaad music wasn’t deemed palatable to uptown…the social demarcation line, in every thing was Torrington Bridge n Cross Roads…even when JBC allowed our music, Barry G had couple hours in the evening…I can still hear the twang, pseudo US accent affected by the other radio personalities on both JBC n RJR….big concerts bk then were performances of black American singers…heck, I saw Teddy Prendergast perform when he was with Harold Melvin n the Bluenotes…..the REAL path blazer was n still is the Stepping Razor, Peter Tosh….see, Bob music was ‘considered’ laid back…Peter was militant in his persona…his lyrics more strident…Jah know, mi know dat if Bob did ever live see weh him ONE LOVE song became a tourist anthem, him woulda bringle …foreigners like getting high to the melody…the words r just words…y mi seh dat, RACISM IS ALIVE N WELL …the same people who sing along to ONE LOVE, once the weed high fade away, wellll….Peter is the one who never compromised…his lyrics , EQUAL RIGHTS, I AM THAT I AM, NO NUCLEAR WAR, 400 Years , Stepping Razor , Pick Myself Up · , African · Bush Doctor , Don't Look Back , Get Up, Stand Up , Legalize It, plus his staunch defiance of the ‘shitstem’ as he termed it p’d off lots n lots of the so-called powers that b….Peter was the one ALWAYS in the crossfire of our security forces…we still trying to get his ganja arrest records espunged…HE was beaten so badly while in lockup at Half Way Tree police station, he suffered a skull fracture….its a truism dat wen it come to our Jcan musical journey, ‘half the story has never been told’…

According to [Clement] Coxsone: ‘Seaga just board the bandwagon. They send people to represent the ska business who don’t even know anything about it.’ Garth White makes this judgment: ‘They left out The Skatalites and Bop and Persian in what seemed to be class bias. There was absolutely no way you could compare Byron Lee as representative of ska with The Skatalites, which was the top and most authentic band of the time.’ Jackie Mittoo was more matter of fact: ‘They send Byron Lee because The Skatalites smoked Ganja.’ Byron Lee himself tells this story: ‘We (Byron Lee and the Dragonaires) were booked to appear at the Manhattan Centre. The government was planning this ska tour to the World’s Fair and heard about our gig, so they asked us if we would back-up the singers since we were already going to be in New York. But we were never paid by the government. We played for free, to help promote ourselves and the music. So all this talk about getting out The Skatalites is foolishness. Furthermore, at the time we were the number one live backing band in Jamaica. The Skatalites were fantastic in the studio, but they were never a popular live band. We were the backing for almost all the live shows… It’s true ska was not a dance at first. When we went to the world’s fair there were dances all over the place. The Twist, Mashed Potato, Cha Cha Cha, plenty of them. In order to compete and sell our product, we Jamaicans had to have a dance too. That really is how the ska dance came about. In a sense it was Jamaican Twist’ (pp. 36-7).’….
