Kudos to Clark Gabel that he fought for Hattie Mc Daniels during a very racist era! Seems like he was a gentleman in real life too. I honestly cannot imagine Joan Crawford as Scarlett O'Hara, Joan, even as a young woman was too much of a "sultry vixen" for the role! Had a laugh about wives buying sleeveless shirts for their husbands, hoping they would look like Gable, probably lots of disappointment in that area! It is amazing how you dig up all these details from decades old movies Neil!

What a remarkable story about the ongoing friendship between Clark Gable and Hattie McDaniels. There are so many scandalous stories from Hollywood, that it's touching and inspirational to hear a story like this. I also have great respect for Clark to fight for Hattie during a racist, segregated period in time. Thanks, Neil, for sharing this wonderful anecdote!

Hattie was a good actress. No one could play her part, but her. Clark was a true friend. Mothers are protective of their daughters. The Queen Mother wasn’t any different.

I am now in my eighties and my grandmother started taking me to pictures when I was very young in England (been an expat in Canada for 50 years). I remember going to see Gone with the Wind with her and all I remembered from that very first exposure to this film was the party at the beginning and the beautiful dress Scarlet was wearing the second thing I remember is her searching through the wounded soldiers for Ashley. I read the book when I was in my teens and after I was told to put the light out I pulled the bedclothes over my head and held a torch to carry on reading. I have seen this movie many times since and Clark Gable was my heartthrob. I have heard good things about him over the years, but I am so happy to hear that he was a genuinely good person from someone who actually knew him. I also liked Mickey Rooney as well. We used to go to the cinema very often during the war and we walked home in the blackout say “pip pip” so we didn’t bump into anyone.👵🏻😅

Bette Davis said in an interview she was offered a role in Gone With The Wind but couldn't because she was in the process of suing over exclusive rights by the studios which she did win. I can imagine her playing Melanie but not Scarlett. Did you know that in that scene where Clark Gable hands Mammie a glass of whiskey? He handed her tea in rehearsals but really did give her whiskey when they filmed. So that face she made was really because she had taken a shot.🤣🤣🤣

@@maggiesays7827 Lol, I'm sure that a sudden slug of whiskey, when she'd been used to cold tea, must have really caught her unawares, but it sounds like he was a bit of a jokester (is that a word) and would forgive him anything. So nice that they had a friendship. Thanks Maggie. xx

The late great Hattie McDaniel was and still is very underrated by Hollywood, and it is often forgotten or not mentioned for whatever reason that she was the very first black person to ever win an Oscar. This lovely lady paved the way for others of her color to later be recognized and honored though she seems to be forgotten. Clark Gable did indeed fight for her and was a close friend to her to the very end. For me personally, some of the best scenes in that movie are scenes between Clark and Hattie. They had chemistry on screen and it showed. Miss Hattie had a tendency to shine beautifully in any movie she was in.

I don't think I can't imagine anyone else playing Scarlett O'Hara, can you? Similarly, there was only one Rhett Butler; and Mammie was played wonderfully by Hattie McDaniel, and deservedly earned her OSCAR. Today, the woke brigade wouldn't entertain this film, but it was over 75 years ago - and it's still a fantastic film. What an excellent report, Neil. Thank you.

Clark Gable was a true gentleman in his time. Dad enjoyed helping Clark and his wife at the time, Carol Lombard, learn more about shooting sports in Southern California. People may not know that Los Angeles was unofficially and semi-officially racially segregated (homes; social; schools and churches especially) until perhaps the very early 1970s when a thaw happened due to law suits about real estate mortgage restrictions and deed restrictions being cancelled by court rulings plus school desegregation bussing and the re-drawing of government public school attendance boundaries. There is much more to it of course but that is the short of it.

What an interesting part of history. I never realized that segregation was still prominent in the 70's. Although, I shouldn't be surprised given Canada's use of residential schools into the 90's.

Hello, Neil. That's a nice story. I didn't know about that. Clark Gable has never really turned my head. I don't know if the mustache threw things off for me, or the fact that most everyone on Gone with the Wind failed terribly at mastering a southern accent. I wouldn't have any idea how to go about acting, but I can tell you that it must be very difficult to sound like a real southerner. I have what many people consider a very thick accent. Many people without one have tried their hand at impersonating it. So far, none of them even sound close. Most people like the accent. In fact, when I go out of town people often ask me to keep talking, because they want to listen to my accent. Some people think less of it though. I could never participate in drama productions, because I refused to neutralize my accent. That was fine with me. I only took drama, because it fit with my schedule the best. Also, I once held a job where the owner would not let me answer the phone, because she preferred the employees with a neutral accent. She was a very strange woman, who found ways to be cruel to pretty much everyone that worked for her. It didn't take me long to move up in the world from that. As you know, I have little tolerance for people who function that way. Also, I was a cheerleader for one year, during high school, and continually heard from the coach that my words dragged out longer, and were pronounced differently than the other girls. I got away with that, because I was the best at stunts and tumbling. Ultimately, I focused on gymnastics, because that was more in keeping with my personality. Much love, from Amber in Alabama.

🇭🇲🦘👋 "OH GEE WHIZ!" You made me cry, but happy 🥲 tears, to think what a good man Clark Gable really was, as was he a very good friend to Hattie McDaniel. Both wonderful Stars ⭐ ⭐ but also putting their friendship before anything else. Unlike MGM, and how very mean MGM were to Clark when he asked for a copy of "Gone With the Wind". Lovely knowing too, that Clark Gable WAS a 'gentleman' and a 'gentle man' caring about Hattie in life, and after her death. Not just a Star ⭐ but a good man too! Very interesting hearing about how the Queen (at the time, later the Queen Mother) although watching the movie herself BANNED the young Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret from watching the movie with her. Although (for the times) I full understand, and (when older) they both (obviously) watched it. You always put these stories together so very well Neil. Another 'gem' so delightfully told - as only you can! Much appreciated with you also being a 'gentleman' and a 'gentle man'. "Thank you" so much Neil xx 👔 ⭐👋
