You forgot to mention that Matchbox Toys made similar Peewee Herman dolls at the same time as the Freddy Krueger dolls. Because of this, there were a couple Peewee dolls that had the Freddy voice box due to a mistake at the factory. As a result, there were PeeWee Herman dolls that said things like "I'm gonna' cut you in two!"

Daltanious was never actually used in Voltron. I think the story goes that they intended to use him, but they used Golion instead. Also, my dad found Megatron in my dresser in gun mode and freaked out for a moment until he realized it was just Megatron... Lesson learned: store your Megatron in robot mode!

@Cmndr Roy Fokker a couple years ago they made a new gun toy megatron , his robot form looks almost spot on to the cartoon , but well his gun mode a little less so ,. that said his robot form doesn't have said odd bit down below. it always bugged me that the original megatron toy (which i did own ) looked nothing like his show counter part when in robot form. he looked so damn odd (big head , stubby arms big trigger section between his legs , proportions totally off from the cartoon megatron.
@DenverStarkey
@DenverStarkey 3 жыл бұрын
@Cmndr Roy Fokker not completely true ,. i lived it man , betwen me , my brother, and my cousin (he was like a third brother to us) we had nearly every transformer released from 84-88 even some of the hard to get mail in ones. while yes the toys did come first , quite a few of them did look like their tv show characters. Optimus prime , soundwave , bummble bee , grimlock, (every other dino bot) , shockwave, Star scream (mostly) just to name a few that did look very much like their show counter parts. then there were the ones that didn't megatron, ratchet, Iron hide, . but in general the ones that "looked nothing like" were much fewer than the ones that at least resembled the toons as much as possible.

Daltanious actually WAS used as Voltron. Before airing the series across the nation, it was initially screened in California. They dubbed the first 4 episodes of Golion, Dairugger, and Daltanious and aired them as Voltron: Defender of the Universe. Then, they based which Voltron would air first on the response they got (popularity). While neither Albegas nor Daltanious got full release as a Voltron series, they were both at one time or another planned to be used, prior to the poor reception of the Dairugger XV based second season.

I guess parents got pretty chill later on since Aliens, Robocop, Predator, Demolition Man, Rambo and Terminator all got toys. It really was a golden age which I noticed it ended at the turn of the millennium once the rating was taken more seriously (I remember my JP 3 toys having a disclaimer for the movie's rating) and also the arrival of collector lines.

Rambo and Robocop managed to sidestep the "Based on an R rated movie" stigma by actually releasing toys based on a cartoon targeted toward kids, rather than the movie itself. However I'm sure there was some backlash over the fact they made cartoons based on those movies in the first place.

G1 Megatron was not so much recalled as it was discontinued and kept off toy shelves to the sadly necessary toy gun safety laws. Al;so hasbro decided to drop a lot of the older characters/toys to make room for new stuff based on the new characters introduced in the 1986 Animated Transformers movie. Hence a lot of characters were killed off early in the film including Optimus Prime. Megatron sort of survived as he was reformatted into Galvatron, who's toy was inline with the new laws.

Regarding the talking Freddy- in high school I worked for an arts & crafts store similar to Michaels named Zaks. They must’ve purchased the entire recalled lot of those dolls because they had literally hundreds of them in stores in their ‘bargain bin’ section up front. They sold them for $5.00 each. I even had to do an announcement over the store’s PA in order to push them because nobody was buying them. And no I didn’t buy any unfortunately. :(

I don’t get it. I am a Christian. If I don’t like a toy, either for me, or my children, I don’t buy it. Better still explain to the child why certain toys are bad before buying it and trying to find something better together. Just because I believe a certain toy isn’t good for my children, doesn’t mean I can or should prevent others from getting it. But that’s an alien concept in this collectivised society. Individual choice...

Polly Pockets: the magnets were glued on loosely, came off and were a choking hazard. The Tramp action figure from the Dick Tracy movie: people thought that it was offensive to call a "homeless person" a tramp. Jarts: obvious reason. I still have that circular ship where the wings slide out. I got it at a garage sale in 1989 along with those two weird floating droids from the Disney movie 'The Black Hole', one is normal and the other is all dented and messed up(purposely) paid 5$ for them both.

I played with the G1 and it was a pellet gun, it was fun, May parents stop, stopping cool toys meant for non-toddle or non-infantr kids, the age range is already in those cool banned toys like the Zenomorph with action. God bless.

toys are not made tough like they were in my days. My favorite toy was a crashup derby where you put the whatever it was with teeth on it into the middle of the car yank the thing out and let it fly off the ramp. Mine came with a pickup truck and the volkswagon. then i had this massive aircraft carrier with foam planes p51s and a jet. you attached it to the elassitc pulled it back hooked it into the slot then when you were ready you pulled the lever for each plane. it came with stickers for the carrier. Then i had those yellow plastic skis you remember those? the ones with the 20 feet of wrapping that you had to wrap your boots with. I had quite the hotwheels collection too.

File this under stupid things I couldn't do today! I always wanted a G1 Megatron, but never could get my parents to buy me 1. A bunch of kids blamed his scarcity on some kid getting shot somewhere. Flash forward to 1995/6 & the wonderful world of eBay. I finally ordered 1 & was so excited I assembled him in the cafe. When he his stock, scope, etc I walked across the room to show my other cool friends this gun toy. Nobody tackled me.

Im not sure if it was the megatron gun they used but it was a couple of toy guns that did bring the orange tip into effect. I did read about megatron being used for that on forums but never found an article 🤷‍♂️

I had one of those 18 inch alien toys. I remember the teeth being silver, and the second set that shot out when you pushed the button, and it seemed almost as big as I was at the time, kinda. Was probably 1982 - 83. I was about 6 years old .

DOUBLE LOL ... i also had the Megatron Toy . saddly his arm broke about 2 years in to owning him , i could still get him into gun shape and it stay on , it would only fall off him in robot form.

I managed to send away and receive the entire line-up of special mail characters from SW as they became available. I didn't even hear about there being a launchable-Fett for years. Those were THE days though - recalling exactly that pitch of youthful excitement that I've only tasted when seeing one of those small, nondescript boxes arrive in the mail 😌 [runs off to storage....just to make sure that rocket doesn't actually fire....]

The ALIEN 18 inch figure later went on to be one of the most sought after, and expensive items in the after market, pulling down upwards of $500.00 loose, and over $1000.00 in the original box ! I have the original figure and bought a facsimile box for it from a vendor in Rome, N.Y. who specializes in retro boxes. How to repair videos are found on KZbin and new figures come out every year. So that decades later, this toy beat the odds and is more popular than ever.

It seems that you focus mostly on boy toys, but let's not forget that girl toys have had their fair share of recalls and boycotts. A couple to mention are Growing Up Skipper, this was a doll of Barbie's little sister that grew up one inch taller and her breasts came out too. And pregnant Midge, that had a baby doll in her belly, also the one Barbie with the dog that could eat "food" pellets and then poop them. LOL.
