The point of the programme, albeit rather clumsily, was to highlight how stupid racism was. He's so ignorant he doesn't realise if it wasn't for the great soldiers of Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Burma, Japan would have taken over Asia in WW2. He then gets Indian's and Pakistanis mixed up, all the while presuming he can't understand English. Always shows the racist to be the fool.

Your response was the closest to ration debate on this webpage, and I agree with such of what you said. As a Black britain, I loved TDUDP, and appreciated the that the mickey was taken out of Alf. However, those on the right, as well as those on the left did not understand the subtlety in the writings, and took Alf as their standard bearer. Also these nuances were lost on the younger generation who had a whole new vocabulary of insults to throw at the likes of me, and hindering race relations. As much as I loved the programme, (although not all the racially charged language,) I would say we have to admire the programme, but recognise, along with Benny Hill, The Black and White Minstrel show, that were of a different time, and reflected different values, celebrating them within their historical context. It is of course right that those shows should not be public broadcast, but those of us that can still relate to them, watch them on websites like this one.

I was with you all the way until you invoked the "PC brigade" argument. PC has no meaning. You I'm sure would not want ISIS, or paedophiles to promote their bile on television, so censorship has, and always will be an important element of public broadcasting. It wasn't that the authorities didn't understand the writer's message, it was that many of the viewers didn't, and it added to their vocabularies words which were then aimed at people of colour. It's unfortunate, but the majority often have to suffer because of a few.

The attitude Britain had of it's self and her citizenship stretched around the world encompassing the empire. It thought of all the dominions as Britain and therefore the people in those countries where British. That is why so many migrated to her shores. He just said that British culture will become eroded away to a point that the indigenous peoples will react. We can not judge history and historical events on the standards of today! Time and tide wait for no man and we will see if Powell's speach serves as a warning from history!

Spoke to an old guy about 14 years ago, he was in the RAF in the 1940's, i asked him after a mutual conversation " was it worth it", "wiz it fuck" he replied, he was there, i didn't feel the need for an explanation.

Poor kids today are taught to think before they speak or risk offending anyone. It's quite ridiculous. They have enough to learn in school already with exams etc. Who are thes people that are so virtues & perfect they have any right to tell us what we should & shouldn't watch. It's a set of unwritten rules by the minority of snowflakes. The BBC, Chanel 4 etc are brainwashing the future generation with Thier nonsense. Shameful

Only fun for the racists. The only people laughing seem to be white people that grew up in this era. It certainly wasn't funny for me when I was called the exact same words at school. Glad this bullshit on tv has gone now.

I hated the 70's. But when I look back and see old innocent humour like this , I realise that English Freedom of Speech is non existent anymore. Humour should have no boundaries. Call this racist if you want, but just take a look at Chris Rock, or other modern black comedians, and ask yourself what would happen if a white comedian was to say what they say, and see how long it takes before they are arrested.

winstoneism And looked what happened to them !!! All vilified and removed from any mainstream TV and lucky if they can fill a community hall for a gig because of political correctness and the erosion of Free Speech..........Nothing to do with their humour , but everything to do with the fact of people are now to scared to enjoy racist jokes...Unless of course they are being told by a black comedian , and Britain has NO funny black comics so were resided to listening to American ones.
@templarknight55577 жыл бұрын
winstoneism Bollocks. It was total fascism demonising racists jokes and was dressed up as liberal values. Comedy has no boundaries or limits and censorship in any democracy is an affront to its very name. The influx of alternative ( meaning unfunny ) comedians had nothing to do with replacing mainstream comedians. The demand for people like Bernard Manning/Roy Chubby Brown/Jimmy Jones and many more had never been so great. They were gradually taken off air by changing attitudes of producers and not because of the lack of demand.

@@mikemarron3333 I am a big advocate for freedom of speech and an underpinning fundamental of that is some people will be offended. The current climate we live in does not support this and freedom of speech is only accepted if it does not run contrary to the current agenda. Not politically correct I know but correct never the less.

On Spike's grave - "I told you I was ill!" This comedy was so good, America made a version "All in the Family", with Caroll O'Connor as the bigot. Funny but not as good as this. I'd put this in the top three with Steptoe and Fawlty Towers.
