Apparently from the unofficial Mario wiki, the European Mario Kart DS website states that Banshee Boardwalk is haunted by the spirits of other racers who’ve also fallen into the water below the boardwalk. It seems pretty official to me 😨

Ah, I remember playing this level when I was 10… took me 30+ minutes to beat because the TV that was hooked up to the N64 had a faded lamp inside, so the screen was dark. I couldn’t see if my life depended on it. I finally finished in 2nd place if I recall, but I never played that course for a long, long time. Good thing we got the lamp replaced two years later, but I hated playing games with darker atmospheres because I couldn’t see.

In Mario Kart Wii I remember going up where the Wario's Minecarts come from, looking inside the Thwomps in GBA Bowser Castle 3 and trying to get to other little islands in Toad's Factory Crate Section and N64 Sherbert Land.

if i had to guess, this is boo lake but in 3D ??? they both have ghosts an d boo lake's has candles. BUT. the music in banshee boardwalk has scratch sounds, it might be the ghosts tryna light candles with a lighter. so this might be boo lake like 2 days before boo lake.

The lore on the Mario Kart DS European website states that the Boo's were the spirits of the driver's who had fallen to their doom. That and the match sound in the background might relate to the Boo's trying to light up the track to guide the driver's to avoid facing the same fate they did. The North American website states that it was a boardwalk meant for racing, so the house could've been just a obstacle racers would have to drive through. The casualties of the past driver's probably got the boardwalk shut and deemed unsafe for driving. The track would be abandoned but since Lakitu can now save the driver's it was probably re-opened.

My headcanon is that it was an island that got submerged by water after a tsunami. The chapel is on what used to be the highest mountain on this island. And during this tsunami, no one survived (besides Swoopers). The Boos are actually the spirits of the tsunami’s victims.

It’s the juxtaposition that this course presents within its themes. Consider this course compared to others in the same game. It’s a lot darker and unlike Toad’s Turnpike there isn’t that much color within the track. This also applies to the music, while most Mario kart music is quite expressive and upbeat, this course defies this. This course would not work if this track had upbeat music, or colorful visuals.
