I moved to Cambodia from Canada six years ago. I often go on motorcycle trips to see these places. I have been to this one as well. So many temples in the jungle to see. Love it here. I live just down the road from Angkor Wat. The government here have given expats, who have been here at least two years, the a free pass to Angkor park and surrounding areas. Very grateful for it.

banteychmar is my childhood place .this temple compound is huge .my grandmother used to tell me that the temple was decorated with gold and diamond or gems but it was stolen away during the war.

My mom is Cambodian but was born in Thailand and my dad was born in Cambodia but he is Thai/Laos and the same he also had to escape the Khmer rouge he's told me stories how my grandfather and grandmother and his older brother had to go village to village with my grandfather had a gun to defend himself with his family and my grandparents had to give him opium to keep my dad quiet because he was just a baby

An amazing human legacy. The Khmer cosmological universe inspired a unique architecture and they were amazing hydro engineers, complete masters of the climate and landscape for hundreds of years. Wonderful documentary !

I love Banteay Chhmar. I've been several times, the last being just before Covid. My wife and I took our two dogs in a tuk-tuk; there and back in a day from Siem Reap. The temple was virtually empty, the dogs had a great time in the forest and we enjoyed the meditative peace of this wonderful place.

Very respectable comment, I’ve read that the ancient inscriptions said Hindu Indian priests were called upon to help instruct the building of Angkor. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were Indians who were commissioned to help with the Angkor project, because obviously it took a lot of labor and architecture. I respect the Indian culture as well because I feel that they have secrets of the universe yet to be revealed. India has magnificent temples the most astonishing is the ones carved into the earth and caves. To my limited knowledge, I understand that the Hindu religion has been around for longer than we really know, it has reached and influenced many nations and is the structure to Buddhism. I also feel that some Indian words are similar to khmers like, mehta, maha, and soriya. I’m not an expert just one seeking knowledge of my ancestors. Inscriptions also said that the name Varman is a sign of royalty? I believe .. there are some names we still have today are somewhat still similar as devi is still used in most of our names. The ancients shared not only knowledge but traded beautiful fabrics and gold food and spices with each other. My mother who is Cambodian had a natural attraction to the Indian culture she loved the jewelry the clothing singing food and dancing. Peace and love ❤

​​​@@Eldot315Angkor wat was built by King belonging to South Indian Dynasty. Edit: Varman is a well known south Indian title. For example the great emperor Raja Raja Cholan's real name is Arulmozhi Varman.

@@phoenixj1299 The name "Varman" is Sanskrit and was adopted by South East Asian kings. If you look up king Jayavarman of Angkor for example, his sculpture has an East Asian face. Another example of a South East Asian king with the name "Varman" is Mulavarman of Indonesia. Scholars know he was a native Indonesian because his paternal grandfather's name was Kundungga, which is an Indonesian name. Therefore, Mulavarman was also indigenous, but he simply adopted a Sanskrit name. In summary, kings named "Varman" were not necessarily Indian. In South East Asia, most kings named "Varman" were native South East Asians.

Even though I was initially disappointed that the video hardly touched on the actual temple, seeing the incredibly nice and friendly people in the village made me forget why I clicked on the video in the first place. The main couple must be two of the nicest people I've ever seen. Interesting that visitor numbers haven't increased. I guess most tourists are too busy taking selfies at Angkor Wat and getting drunk in Siem Reap.

Tthere are no buses and no regular tours out that way. So you have to have a car or motorbike to get there. If you go during the rainy season, I recommend visit Prasat Mebon at sunset or sunrise. The reservoir is massive and you can walk a long boardwalk to the island temple in the center. Amazing experience, the birds, the reflection of the sky and sun on the water, and being a kilometer out in the middle of it.

What an absolutely incredible place of unparalleled beauty, and I am only one minute in. Maybe they'll speak of this, but sometimes I wonder how the builders and artizans meant to leave these wondrous ruins finished when new, although I'm astonished with it as it is. Who knows, Maybe I'd prefer it this way. I don't think we've ever had anything like this in California!! I thank God for the internet.

the monks chant is probably pretty close to what plainsong sounded like in the average monastery in Europe in the 9 -10th century. I'll bet the villagers have to mount a 24 hr guard at the temple complex, and even then they probably lose some of the sculpture to the international art thieves.

It’s an honor to have a Cambodian background I love our great histories . There’s about 400Temples in Cambodia . I’ll only knew Angkor Wat during my visitation to Cambodia. While I was there I’ve been able to rent alone a Tuk Tuk and cruising along Angkor Wat I felt so unreal and so peaceful ,somehow I feel also their presence of the Spirits from our Ancestors as i contemplate meticulously all its beauties images and all the stones carved across the Temple I’ve couldn’t stop holding tears from all our pass histories it will remain always a sacred place within all the heart of our Kmers children. The days of my end traveling I’ll wish not to return back to my second home but I have a family responsibilities to be in charge someday soon I’m moving for good to our native land. Love Cambodia indeed! ❤🙏🌺🦜😓🇰🇭

It's always amazing to see each an every ASEAN countries with all the vibrant culture, traditions and history. I feel like ASEAN should start from NorthEast India, specially from Manipur where we Meiteis follow a religion mixed with hinduism and local indigenous sanamahism. Their is a great deal of similarity in physical features, demeanor and beliefs (as close to hinduism) between the people. And yes!, we have the traditional boat race as well.

very interesting documentary, indeed. the ruins were of interest to me. the people and their culture were also interesting. living on just $200 a month is unheard of in the states. but I could not bear to see Srimoane twisting the wings of that chicken and then dunking it in the vat of boiling water. i could never eat that! i am surprised that PETA is silent on that. nonetheless, the boat race was exhilarating. Cambodia is a very primitive, yet a very mystical place and the temple ruins are the best part.
