Thank you so much, Marion; and hello New Mexico! Honestly, we truly were very close to skipping it. The only reason we even included it at the start was because a friend had visited in 2022 and loved it. I don't even think what she posted about clicked with me; it was more her enthusiasm. And we knew so little about anything related to the country, including Angkor Wat. But its people and vibe hit us in the best way. Thanks so much, Jay and Sarah! It's a great compliment from fellow KZbinrs who understand how much work goes into each episode. We each do our part and are self-taught, but Kevin takes the credit for his amazing video editing skills, which he's learned on the fly. He first started WhiskyRiffs.com in 2020, which is a KZbin channel reviewing whisky, and then we both started collaborating on Finding Gina Marie, so he's been steadily increasing his skill set. I can be a critic at times (which is one of the ways I contribute 🤣), and Kevin always takes my feedback and blows me away with how he makes it all work. We are headed to Tirana later this year and your video, especially of the people parking, gave us quite a chuckle! Thank you for watching and for taking the time to leave us this comment! -Judy

We had such an amazing time and we hope you do as well! Our tour guides at Angkor Wat were good, not great, but we still suggest you use one. Ours was from Get Your Guide. We did a sunrise/sunset tour that ran the course of two days. The first one started at 4am and lasted until around noon and the second day was from around 10am to about 7pm. They drop you off and pick you up each day. We'd *love* to hear your thoughts when you visit. If you stop at any of the restaurants we ate at, please give them a hello for us! By the way, one of our Khmer friend’s wife cooks for Khmer Kitchen. I’ll share your lovely review with her. The nibbling fish tanks have now been banned in Lao because the little fish often die from what travellers may have on their feet, such as oils, insect repellent and street bacteria. If you are in Luang Prabang you can meet these teeny fish in their natural habitat at Tad Kuang Xi. Of course they are everywhere. Safe travels. I am glad I discovered your channel. 😊

It could possibly be because it's a tourist city that it's important to leave a positive impression on tourists. We did find more trash when we explored more of the countryside, but I wonder if that's due more to infrastructure and cost of garbage collection. But overall, we found Cambodians to be peaceful, tidy, and caring, and I think those traits applied to how they treat people as well as their surroundings. It was quite a wonderful experience. Our Airbnb co-host was mopping and cleaning the common areas and outdoors daily. We absolutely loved it. -Judy

Hi Amy Joy! Thank you so much for following along with us, especially in our early days when we were still figuring out our path forward. Here's a recent 2024 video we shared about our lives as full-time travelers in case you missed it because it answers some of those questions. In a nutshell, Kevin ended up quitting his job with Apple in January 2023 because the company stopped being friendly to remote work. It was a blessing because we could see that balancing everything would be hard and our hearts were more invested in building our channel and our creative work versus the restrictions of corporate America. We did discuss living in Portugal, but after a visit there in October 2022, we decided it wasn't the place for us after all. Italy still is in our hearts, and we have a video from Turin, that we loved so much more than we expected to! Right now it's between Verona and Turin. We have several trips to Italy scheduled for this year, including one with our daughter. We're excited to share all of those this year. Italy is freezing in winter and after time in Lecce and Assisi, we aren't sure if we want to endure the winters there, which is where Cambodia may enter the picture. We could envision living in Cambodia from November or December through March each year as a break from the cold. I'm still navigating the dual citizenship process and that could take another two years. It's okay, though because we still have so much of the world that we want to see that we aren't ready to settle down in one place yet. So living in a new country each month has suited us very well. Thank you so much for these questions, for watching our videos and for your support. It truly means the world to us. ♥️ -Judy Pros and Cons List of Full-Time Travel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bGSvmIymjphknNk Why you MUST go to TURIN: kzbin.info/www/bejne/joeXfpWjgMZ9d9U

It really is a terrific place - one I could retire in easily - if not for the killer heat ! -- I'm old and doubt I could handle those temps. - with all that humidity ? -- Heat stroke recipe for many. -- Otherwise - a wonderful city with international food available - and quite awesome people. Also has a very low cost of living ! Much to like.

Hi Dean, we recently posted a video-from Cambodia actually-of what we currently have in our packs. Bear in mind we are traveling full time and everything we own is what we carry, so we do have some luxury items that most travelers wouldn't need and we also pack heavier than we would if we were spending even one or two months on the road. We each carry a backpack and a 22" rolling suitcase and except for super budget airlines like Vietjet, we don't have to check our bags. Happy to answer any questions after you've watched the video. Hi Paris, Unfortunately we did not. We looked into it, but we prefer to slow travel. We definitely are eager to see Phnom Penh and give it a full month where we can enjoy it more fully and really immerse ourselves into it. The cost of another plane fare and ground transfers didn't make it feasible for this trip. We get discounts at Airbnbs when we stay an entire month, so we lose some of that benefit by doing a three-day detour to another city. It's better overall to give it its full attention. Great question, and thanks for watching! -Judy

I left the country back in 1979 after I had to live through the genocide under Pol Pot killing madness. Most of my family members did not survive as we were forced to move out of the Phnom Penh City in 1975 to work in the rice fields. I've returned to visit my sole surviving sister every year for the last ten years since my retirement from the US to heal the past. Cambodia has come a long way since the prolonged civil war was officially ended upruptly in 1998. Here, you do not have to worry about mass shooting and gun death violence like the first world countries. Be mindful of your surroundings . Be kind whenever possible. It's always possible as life is short to do the things we don't love doing. Happy and safe travels from a genocide survivor ✌️

Wow, we are humbled. I can't imagine what you lived through and our hearts break because of the tragic history that Cambodia has endured. It was a big regret of ours that we weren't able to make it to the historic sites to pay our respects to the innocents that were slaughtered. We definitely have it on our list to do that. It's always inspiring for us to hear about how people live through such adversity and aren't hardened as a result. I have been many times to Siem Reap. It is a very nice place to visit for a few days, but quite a small city. After a while, it may be quite boring to live there, i guess ….. I only mentioned this because your video thumbnail rhetorically asked whether could we live there? 😊. Did you watch the PHARE circus? Quite enjoyable. Performed by a group of young people, who I understand have also performed overseas, in Europe for example Will you be going to Phnom Penh ? Just curious😊 Btw, keep up the good work ! I am still dutifully following your journey ….

Hi Mike, I think we just made some special connections and there was such an ease that we haven't encountered elsewhere. We still love Italy and likely will settle there at some point in the far distant future, but it gets cold in the winter, and Cambodia might be a perfect winter location. We were struck by the strong community atmosphere in Siem Reap, too. We didn't see the PHARE circus but we heard about it. There were a lot of things we didn't get to while we were there, which is why we feel like we could spend a lot more time there. We skipped Phnom Penh, but primarily because (1) we had a lot of work to catch up on; and (2) now that the new airport is an hour drive from the airport, between the expense and the lost time, it seemed better to devote an entire separate trip to it. If you've been there, do you recommend it? How about Kampot, which also has been recommended to us? Thank you so much for reaching out. It's always great to hear from you! -Judy
@Property2030sg10 ай бұрын
@@FindingGinaMarie Yes, the people is Siem Reap are very hospitality- and service-oriented. Very pleasant. Kampot is nice but too far down South. Quite a taxing road trip, even from Phnom Penh - due to lack of highways. Phnom Penh is not as interesting as Siem Reap - it is more for business. I like Phnom Penh because the Chinese food is really good at my many favourite restaurants - even better than back in my home country :). I haven’t been back to Cambodia since 2019, and I do miss the Chinese food in PP 😊. Somehow, I find the Khmer cuisine a bit limited, compared to other South East Asian cuisines but what do I know ?😊
@FindingGinaMarie10 ай бұрын
On top of cost, we did think that it looked like Phnom Penh might be more business oriented, so thanks for clarifying that for us. It's disappointing to know that highways make Kampot a challenge. We found some Cambodian/Thai fusion places that were interesting, but we did enjoy a lot of Cambodian food as well. But it was nice that if I wanted Khmer food and Kevin was craving a burger, we could easily do that as well. It doesn't make for as authentic of a culinary experience as it could, but we didn't struggle with food in Cambodia nearly as much as we did in the part of Saigon that we were in. Thanks for all your input. It's very helpful! -Judy

I just started looking into Cambodia. I am in Metro Manila now and the traffic in Siem Reap looks tranquil compared to the Philippines. I have heard they have a one year Visa that is very easy to get.
@FindingGinaMarie10 ай бұрын
We can't really speak on the one-year visa as it's not something that we've explored. We'd anticipate staying 90 days to get us through the worst of the winter months. But yes, the traffic in Siem Reap isn't a problem. Unfortunately, that's because tourism has't returned back to pre-2020 levels yet. It's a great place. We wanted to visit the Philippines this year, but we couldn't figure out where to stay for a month that would give us a good experience with excellent wifi. We looked at Cebu, but we weren't sure if staying the IT Park was the right experience to have there. @@FindingGinaMarie Unfortunately the rumor about PH infostructure is true. I am in Makati and have traveled a bit but long bus rides to underwhelming locations got old. Some of the most beautiful places here have subpar roads and internet. Places that are amazing are spread out and when I see them I'd just as soon stay for a month or not at all. As to the wifi in Bohol, El Nido, Palawan or Siquijor I can't say first hand...but if I can't find decent gym on the map I take that as a bad sign. Safe Travels. Edit, The Mall of Asia in Manila is massive. Huge Mall Culture here. Free A/C. Some historical building from the Spain's occupation. Fort Santiago for example. Corregidor from WWII history. Also the Philippines American Cemetery. Then BGC is just a bit north of that shows you the first world city PH can build.

Thanks so much for taking the time to give this response, Keith. It's disappointing news for sure. We don't typically care for super modern cities, but BGC might be something we should check out. We appreciate all this information and may need to rethink Cebu and swap it out for Manila. -Judy

This is a very enjoyable video, thanks guys👍 I had never considered visiting this area, but now it’s on my bucket list thanks to you. It looks very clean, is it really like that everywhere? I’m also wondering how you went with gastro? I realise that you found a few places with filtered water taps etc, but surely you were exposed to the local water at some stage because you were there for a month or so? Did anyone get sick at some stage? And if not, do you think you might already be acclimatised to dodgy drinking water? Egypt, Vietnam etc you might have been subconsciously building up your immunity systems?😂 Ps i actually discovered sugar cane juice in Cairo. Our cabbie could see that Lisa and I were sun affected, so he hooked us up and we never looked back. It’s also a great hangover cure fyi

We actually did pretty well stomach-wise, Dan, especially since we did drink a good amount of the fruit frappes. There were a few places we ate at that maybe caused some problems, but overall we did really well. After getting a single day of Pharaoh's revenge in Egypt, I am pretty cautious and that's one of the reasons we skipped some of the foods by the river. I think many of them actually would have been fine, though. Overall, I think the standards of the quality of food prep were pretty high all things considered. Thank you so much for watching! We felt the hygiene conditions were worse in Vietnam, which did make it hard for us to fully embrace our time there. We heard about sugar cane juice in Cairo, but somehow we never got any! So I was determined to have it in Cambodia, and the first place I tasted it was at the Angkor National Museum. It is so good and refreshing! Good job to your cab driver, and thanks so much for sharing this story! Here's our Angkor Wat video if you still need any convincing that it's an incredible place! -Judy This is Angkor Wat: kzbin.info/www/bejne/foane6mDqMeFd6M

Siem Reap is a lovely city. Recently returned from a trip to see Angkor Wat (March 2024). The Cambodians are nicest people, very humble and polite. There is need to sorry on the food front. We had local food, Indian, Italian and Mexican. Starbucks is also there. We hired a tuk tuk driver outside our hotel as our personal taxi and tour guide. Great value as he showed around the city and country side and collected us and dropped us off. The old market is a must visit as well as Pub Street for night life. Lots of restaurants and bars. I would recommend the Angkor Wat museum as a must visit. The dollar is king there with virtually everything priced in dollars. So for foreign tourist especially from the US or UK Cambodia is very very affordable and well worth the effort to visit. Can't recommend it highly enough.

We felt exactly the same! We felt a little guilty about all the non-Cambodian food we had, but we were there for a month and did pretty well at getting plenty of the local flavors. It was an easy place to stay and we loved our time there. Here's our video from our two days in Angkor Wat if you want to relive your experience. Thank you so much for watching, Joe! -Judy 🎥 This is Angkor Wat: kzbin.info/www/bejne/foane6mDqMeFd6M

We did not, but it's mostly because we got around on foot everywhere we went except to/from the airport. We loved Cambodia and would love to return and explore more. We barely scratched the surface of Siem Reap. Thanks for watching! -Judy
