Talking about how the durselys miss treat Harry I believe it is explained in on of the books or perhaps some extra material that because Harry was technically one of Voldemorts horcroxs that why they treated him so badly..

All I know is that in one of the later books, its explained that they had to leave Harry with a blood relative (Petunia) in order for the protective charm to continue working. Sounds like a retcon to avoid making Dumbledore look like a jerk for leaving him with an abusive family!
