Man oh man, I remember the days blaring this theme on that one mission inside the Heighliner, where you had to destroy the Atreides and Ordos reinforcements before they could arrive. It added a sense of urgency coupled with the timer ticking down - and the knowledge you were doing this in violation of the Great Convention. One of the better villain missions in gaming for sure!

It's from an older, oft-forgotten Real Time Strategy game called Emperor: Battle For Dune, released at the turn of the millennium by Westwood Studios (who would soon be forcibly shut down by their publishing partners, EA Games - although Westwood still survives in the form of Petroglyph Studios who went on to release other RTS titles such as Star Wars: Empire At War and Grey Goo). The game, as the title suggests, is set within Frank Herbert's "Dune" universe. At this point in the narrative, 3 main houses are fighting a war over the desert planet Arrakis, an otherwise unremarkable world of endless desert home to the nomadic Fremen and the gargantuan subterranean Sandworms, but which contains the most useful and addictive substance in the Universe - the Spice Melange, used by the Guild Of Travelers to navigate at FTL speeds, given its psychotropic properties of prescience (predicting the future). The 3 main houses are as follows: The altruistic Atreides, a thoroughly respectable house of those who would gladly call their fellow man a brother. Led by Duke Achillus (and played in the FMV cutscenes by Star Trek: The Next Generation's Michael Dorn), who take pride in both their diplomatic and military skill, and who mostly hail from the ocean world of Calodan. They are only in this war for material gain, as is their nature, given that in their own language, there are over 300 words for the concept of profit, yet not one for the concept of compassion. Given their nature, individually their weapons are somewhat lacking, but they are easily the fastest troops on the battlefield, and possess means to turn the tide of battle by bewitching enemy forces. Well, basically, this is what you get when you get a New Age (same genre as the likes of Yanni, John Tesh, Jan Hammer, Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, and Mike Oldfield) musician to make "heavy metal" music. Good god, Arkenstone has put out over 50 albums. The man has to eat, breathe, and shit music to get this much skill. As one who has been a fan of his music since 1987, I've heard a LOT of what he's put out and I've never heard anything like this. Most of it is "pretty" music, sometimes with a catchy and elaborite rhythm, sometimes just very flowery, but I can hear his signature harmonies all over this track. To me, it's stupendously amazing, just like all his other music.
