Please don’t feed the trolls. This is something I do in my free time as part of a hobby. If you think I’m doing something incorrectly, explain exactly what it is. Looking for a flame war? This is not the place.

Thank you for the informative info! I'd be interested to see a BaoFeng + Discone antenna setup if you're able to do something like that

I am about to take a 1,200 road trip. Is 2 m and 70 cm dead? I bought a new car mount antenna for the trip but really wonder if it's damaged as it is rare to pick up any stations. I'm going to get my General and Amateur Extra in order to make things more interesting.

Does that antenna really help you get better reception vs. just the hand held? Seems like something I'd like to do too since I have the handheld and could use the antenna while I'm in my car.

Yes, it absolutely does help. I strongly recommend using an external antenna (mounted on the car - magnetic mounting is the easiest) if you’re using your HT in your car.

Which antenna did you use? What radio are you using? What do you mean by “radio doesn’t work”? I can give you a much better answer with some specifics.

eBay, but most amateur radio vendors sell them. I believe they’re available on Amazon as well

I hope none of you take this advice from a beginner or this professional. This is not what to do on checking swr.. Too Funny

From what I can tell, the measurement procedure is correct, unless someone else can prove me otherwise.

There's nothing "Real" about real flyers rc. Your basic model airplane snobs that claim to know things, but crash more than fly. Yet another sad hobby to dump your money into. I've known enough of these hacks to steer very clear. Don't let him bother you about your procedure in experimentation. I know you a lot better than that, R4002.

I suppose you could be checking the SWR on a model control transmitter…even with the 2.4 GHz transmitters that seem to be used universally now. Sadly the 2.4GHz systems are terrible when it comes to range capability and maximum RF power output, even compared to the 900 MHz band. 2.4 GHz and 900 MHz RC transmitters operate under Part 15 regulations. The Part 95C RCRS regulations permit up to 750mW (0.75 watt) RF output power on the 72 MHz / 75 MHz channels. On the 26-28 MHz (27MHz) channels the power limit is 4 watts except on 27.255MHz where the limit is 25 watts.
