They're definitely the same radio, but I am not sure which one came out first. So the RT84 could be a re-badged DM-1701. Either way, it is good to know that codeplugs can be shared - too bad it can't open more common codeplugs like the UV380 and such.

Hi, I have a few Baofeng UV-5R radios that I’ve been experimenting with. Recently, I decided to upgrade and got a pair of Quansheng UV-K5's, which I really like. Then, I felt the need for digital radios and purchased a Baofeng DM-1701, hoping to catch some local digital chatter. However, I haven’t been able to pick up anything at all. It seems like I might be doing something wrong, or maybe there’s simply no one talking. Thanks. P.S. I got the digital radio because whenever I scan the area and hear chatter, it’s just static. I know this is because they’re transmitting digitally. After googling digital ham radios, I found the DM-1701 and decided to try it.

I like the DMR protocol, but there is a lot of baggage that comes along with it. Program the DMR radio, program the DMR hotspot, then if mobile, your cellphone has to be connected to the DMR hotspot. The audio quality associated with DMR is unquestionable good, but is all this worth it?
@HamRadio24 жыл бұрын
Or just use a DMR repeater. No hotspot or mobile connection needed. But yes, you are not wrong, I just always maintain that it isn't as complicated as people make it out to be. It just takes a little bit of time to learn.

Under ideal conditions, digital communication is better.But in real mountain, as well as on (heavily) rough terrain, analog communication is more practical, one can say much more enduring than digital.
@HamRadio23 жыл бұрын
One tests across a metroplex, filled with buildings, structures, traffic and RF sources of every kind imaginable, DMR out-performs analog as far as distance goes. It also depends on what frequency you are talking about - VHF vs UHF. I can see that analog would work well through a forest or out in rolling hills of the countryside, but how does it compare with a real DMR radio? I wouldn't use this Baofeng on that specific test.

Oh. No, man! this is extremely not serious. We need a real test, in an open area, with the same transmission power! At the same frequency. So that the camera could see the area and the distance. In addition, everyone hides a very important thing: digital communication loses to analog on very rough terrain. Where the reception is weak, you can understand the conversation and speech through the noise on the second or third attempt. And the digit in this case will be completely "dead", the digital signal does not pass any way. As a rule, at long distances or in extreme situations, when communication is a chance for salvation... analog is your only chance.
