Man you win the prize..I am 51 years old been a ham since i was 17 and a few years ago i tried to set up a md9600 and just could not wrap my head around how dmr works,You by far have the best learning video on youtube.Very clear explanation on how to build a codeplug.I think most people try very hard to explain it but often produce information overload too much at one time..I got very lost when i gave it a go the 1st time..I got it now & Thanks so much for your detailed explanation..N4DXX

i have the MD9600 as well, programed a few analog repeaters. have not figured out the dmr yet, going to try this soon. its a nice radio.. just wish i could figure out digital.

Got my Radio ID, had my radio with me at the office yesterday, and I worked from home today, found your video again and was ready to get this HT talking, but I left my radio at the office, SMH. Thanks from a fellow Buckeye and Ham and Electronic Enthusiast. I don't come on YT often but I always check your videos, they are always fantastic and get me interested in electronics again. So I will program my radio tomorrow and must admit this is by far the best explanation and class on getting the DMR radio going and explaining.

Actually, DMR is a open European radio standard from ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute). One of the first uses was in PMR446 kind of the European equivalent of FRS. Motorola just tinkered a bit with it and put a fancy name on what came out. Their initial intent was to be able to sell radios using the standard to European customers. When other manufacturers started selling to the rest of the world, so did Motorola and that included the United States.

So the freq you programmed in is obviously to transmit to your hotspot assumed to be in your house or nearby? I have ordered a new JumboSpot, but it hasn't come in yet. Next question, I assume since I don't have my Jumbospot yet, in order for me to connect to DMR, I would have to use the frequenices to local Corpus Christi, Texas DMR repeaters in order to "connect to the network"? I understand when my Jumbospot gets in, it will be connected to the internet through my wireless router/modem so that will get me into the DMR network. HOWEVER, I will try to look and see if you or anyone else has a KZbin video on how you actually make a contact, in other words, once all this is programmed into your radio, how to you actually connect and how do you decide or select an individual to chat with? I think you also need to mention to in the channel section to set the color code and the time slot. Depending on if you are using a Hotspot or Repeater etc etc.

About 3 years ago I went to buy one of these DMR radios at a major company. Want mention the name. I knew very little about DMR then. They looked up my location. 2 DMR repeaters that might be close enough for me to operate. He also said if your nice to this guy that lives x location, he might let you use it or you can run it on your PC like most do. I started thinking this guy sure don't want to sell me a radio .I really like your reviews. . So I was biter about DMR from the start. Pretty much over the years I have stayed away from DMR and SDR. My conclusion is any radio that needs a PC for any reason I will not buy. I told someone else that they said in 5 years that's all they will be. To me a radio served a purpose at one time. Hams done phone patch that allowed our veterans to talk to the family over long distances. This was way before my time. In my time we didn't have cell phones. Kinda cool to talk from your your radio to a land-line. I think many of the Elmer's have others to program there radios for them... Keep the reviews, kit building, and all the good content coming... 73s

There are different flavors in Radio world, analog or digital, times are changing, in the past analog radio was the best to communicate but nowadays the new technology "Digital" turned world into a new era of communication with different standards, now i see young people going into radio communications than before, myself I'm using digital radio with internet for longer range, so we need to improve in better communication, 73

You dont have to have a computer to use these radios. They will function just fine on analog repeater and you can set up simplex channels and talk radio to radio and do group or private call, send texts, have encrypted comms etc. Very useful radios for groups, no internet required.

What you've just showed me, gives me the power to get it done correctly! I ferry sail boats all over Southern Calif. sometimes things don't work on them? Only one problem, you dont need a scan list for a hotspot as you need to kerchunk to get access to the talkgroup so you will only be scanning the static channel.

Excellent presentation. A minor nitpick. 435-438MHz, inclusive, it set aside in all 3 IARU regions for satellite operations. From a practical standpoint, given the low power, etc, it probably would not cause a problem, though cases of interference have occurred. It would be better to use another frequency outside this range.

Just starting to look into DMR radios...when your test audio came through it sounded like Stephen Hawking, so odd to me. I hear some DMR chats on my Uniden scanner and it does sound very clear but very artificial (not sure what word describes it). I'm seeing the TYT 390 for only $129. Might pick one up for myself this Christmas. Thanks for putting this tutorial together. It'll definitely help me down the road.

my md-uv380 is stuck on the TYT screen on powerup. I have tried firmware update but nothing. Any tips? Is my radio bricked or what? On power down I see a different screen saying POwering down and shows batt level. What am i doing wrong

Hey mate, code-plugs aren’t programmed! A code-plug is simply a fancy name for a computer program file which has been created using a radio’s programming software, and then saved as a file which is sometimes referred to as a “code-plug”.

Thank you, but i noticed you skipped right over the part where you loaded the codeplug to the radio. Nobody seems to want to publish that part as if everybody knows how to do that. None of my DMR friends know how. They just take it to the DMR knowhow guy to program it. . It takes several weeks sometimes to get in contact with the DMR programmer as he is super busy and his classes does not usually fit in with my schedule. Could you touch on loading a codeplug to the radio. I think it would be very helpful and save some of us a lot of headaches.

Yes, this worked perfectly, I had this figured out on my own after I put my JumboSpot together. The problem I'm having now is actually getting the repeater to work. I've heard people talking on the repeater a time or two, but there are also times when the recieve light is on, but I'm not hearing anything, and when I key the repeater, the light is red while transmitting, then green as the repeater is saying something - that I don't hear - and otherwise is not working... Any thoughts?

Great video. I am new to HAM completely. I have a DMR Radio (RD-5R) and no license (Studying for the tests). QUESTION: When you were setting up the channels, you added Rx and Tx frequencies. Where are those coming from. I am looking at several call groups lists, and none of them show frequencies. Can you add some clarity on this?

They come from my "hotspot" if you have local repeaters, use those frequencies.

Great video! I realize this is an older video but wanted to ask a question. I've programmed my radio just like this but when I select a channel, instead of seeing the name I see the channel frequencies. It's really confusing because I use a hot spot so every channel shows the same frequency instead of the channel name.
