Baofeng GT-3TP is the one I got about 5 years ago and I use it all the time. Standing out in Kisatchie National Forest I've talk to mobiles and base station 30 to 40 miles away. I have extended battery pack option and nagoya NA-771. It works perfect for the price. I never checked the watt output because I really don't expect there will be much difference between a few watts. Never owned or used a high dollar yeasu, icom or kenwood handheld, so I can't compare it to those.

Hi Jason! Thank you so much for reviewing this radio. I have one and I use it for family coms. Range in open country is a little over two miles in unobstructed lands. Unknown to most, the Baofeng GT-3TP can be software modified for use in the 1.25 meter band. However, the 1.25 meter band usage will be compromised as compared to the 2 meter band and the 70 centimeter band. Where as there are three power settings in 2 meters and 70 centimeter bands, the 1.25 meter band will have the small portable transceiver locked at about 2 watts, no matter if it is set for low, medium, or high. Please remember to get a 1.25 meter antenna, or get a tri-band antenna for your hand held transceiver. The antenna used was an orphaned UV-5R tri-band handheld that was left at my home shop. A Nagoya NA-320 or Abbree AR-771 will give fair performance for all three bands. Testing against another economy tri-band handheld tranceiver, the Abbree AR-F3 maximises at 4 watts for 2 meters, 5 watts for 70 centimeters, and 2.5 watts for 1.25 meters. The software modified Baofeng GT-3TP maximises at 7.2 watts for 2 meters, 8.1 watts for 70 centimeters and 2.1 watts on 1.25 meters. all measurements were into a dry dummy load. Get the most out of an already very affordable handheld transceiver. Modify the frequency usage on your Baofeng GT-3TP.

ive used one before,but if there was a EMP or grid failure wouldn't you want an analog?
@indridcold84332 жыл бұрын
An Icom 2-AT would be great! However, you can shield this small transceiver in what is known as a tactical bucket. You start with a metal bucket and fit it with a metal lid. Inside, you put in a small transceiver, a charger, a few batteries, a few antennas, a microphone, maybe some coaxial cable. After the EMP, you can use the contents of your tactical bucket with great success. Do not forget to get a pre-2007 Jeep Wrangler for your vehicle. They were EMP resistant until 2006. 2007 saw the advent of the over engineered, not shielded, Wrangler.

@@HamRadio2 i do indeed wonder what what the internal differences between these radios and say the yaesu ht's are. I'm no electrical engineer but it would be interesting to see what it would take to make these perform closer to the big name ones. Is it financially feasible, worth the time and effort, or just chuck em in the trash and buy 1 of the big 3? I feel standards and Q.C. wont get better unless the manufacturer's feet are held to the proverbial fire. I mean I get making an "entry level" radio, but shouldn't the standards for such a radio be even greater, as the intended market for them has very little knowledge on spurious emissions and how to mitigate them, as well as other issues the lower quality and poorly qc'd radios have. Just my 2 cents here. Thank you Jason for all your videos, they really do help people everywhere get a better understanding of all things amateur radio.

It is sort of an SDR transceiver. The modifications can be made using software. I have successfully modified a few of them for 126Mhz to 180Mhz, 190Mhz to 272Mhz, 400Mhz to 542Mhz. I also made the squelch far more usable, than the default settings. There are a few other small modifications that I made. This is not to say you can not make hardware modifications, as well. I changed the microphone in one, for someone else.

I have one... it works. It's not the best radio in the world, but it's good to keep in my truck for a crossband ht. I run a FT-8800R in my truck and often walk into the woods scouting a potential building site. So it gets to the truck and I feel a little better knowing I can reach out if I need help. Keep in mind that many times there is no cellular access in these places. An added benefit is that it's an inexpensive radio... if I happen to knock it off my side and lose it in the woods, I'm not going to spend a whole lot of time searching for it

I have two of them, but have never put them on a meter. The communication I have had with people as far as 20 miles away on low power (Line of sight with no obstacles in between) has been good and have been told I am 'banging in'. Whether the two radios put out the same power is unknown. The thing that annoys me about them is the information on the specs in their manual tells us absolutely nothing about the antenna and also it is unclear whether the radio can be left on the charging base indefinitely or not. I would have thought all two-way radios should be able to be left on their charging base overnight without the worry of overcharging and depleting the battery's quality and life. Maybe you can tell us that. I too have the Radiodity flexi antenna on both radios but no information about the specs of it. Perhaps you can tell us.

Besides, if you speed in your automobile, even by just a little, that is very dangerous , and potentially deadly. Using one of these transceivers on a public, license-free, band, is neither dangerous, nor deadly. I know which one I would feel safer doing between speeding in my automobile and using a transceiver not meant for certain frequencies on those frequencies.

@indridcold84332 жыл бұрын
Yes they can. But guess what. Speeding in your automobile, even by as little as 5 kilometers per hour, has been proven to be dangerous and even deadly, and you likely do it. Using this transceiver on FRS and GMRS is not dangerous, nor deadly. Why would you speed in your automobile and not use this transceiver on a few public bands that are license free anyway? You make the choice. However, if you chose not to use this transceiver on a few extra public bands, you better not speed in your automobile anymore! I do not have this transceiver but do speed a tiny bit. Thus, if I ever get licensed, I would likely sneak in a few conversations in the public bands.

I recently bought 2 of these and am super disappointed. TX range cannot be extended for MARS anymore and the automatic squelch is horrible. Both would randomly open the squelch, while on a road trip, blasting out annoying static. For reference, my ID-51a was right next to them and was quiet the entire trip, except for when it was receiving a signal of course. These are definitely going back.

I had this problem too. With chirp is it possible to adjust the squelch. I set the values for squelch much higher and now is it the best radio for this price.
@indridcold84332 жыл бұрын
The frequencies can be extended to around 126Mhz to 180 Mhz, 190Mhz to 272Mhz, 400 to 540Mhz. The automatic squelch can be reprogrammed for much more usable ranges that will make it very different between the number settings in the squelch menu. But be warned! This may, or may not, be illegal in the region, or nation you reside. However going only 5 kilometers over the speed limit is also illegal and everyone does that. Which one is more dangerous, using a modified transceiver on MURS, or speeding in your automobile. Since I speed in my automobile, which is far more dangerous, I see no issue with modifying a small transceiver and using it responsibly on other bands. Have fun!

Hi A while ago I got on some list where out of the blue I will get things from China to test and I was sent almost the entire line up of Baofeng radios . I can't say they are bad radios when you add the extended battery they can be quite useful and away say to get on 220 for a inexpensive price . I can't confirm the power output as I don't own a power meter but they seem to be able to hit quite a lot of repeaters from my house once you put replacement antennas on them . Martin Poles KC6QVE

I am not a fan of Chinese radios. My neighbor has one and had trouble programming for the 224 repeater for local Arizona repeater.

Maybe it was defective. People always bring Chinese radios to me so I can programme their frequencies into their radios. I have never had any issues with the programming staying in the channels.

@@indridcold8433 the problem was the offset for the 222 MHz band . I guess the other band have the offset correct.
@indridcold84332 жыл бұрын
@@michaelruther9175 Ah. The offset for 1.25 meters is -1.6Mhz, 2 meters is -0.6 Mhz, for 70 centimeter band +5Mhz. Of course, these are only agreed upon standards. The offsets can really be anything. There is a 2 meter repeated around here with +1Mhz offset.

Nope. You won't find a GT-3TP that will put out 8 watts or anywhere n near. They all will put out the same. But you're right about it being a good radio. The flashlight's a bit nicer but the price is breaking thirty dollars, which means there are better radios for the price. It's still okay, but you can do better.

That's basically true of all 'Feng radios. But it wouldn't surprise me if you could find one that did 8-watts.

Baofeng is what it is. It's ham radio garbage but it's also thirty bucks. The big three can't come close. I think every ham radio operator either has one or will have one. That says a lot.
@indridcold84332 жыл бұрын
I am not an amateur radio operator. However, many bring them to me to be programmed, modified, set up, and even installed into their vehicles. I make quite a bit of money with these radios. Some of these people hold the highest licenses and have lots of experience. Some of these people are just barely getting started and have very little money. But all have these budget minded radios. If I get an amateur radio license, the first thing I will do is get one of these radios that I have had so much experience with working with them. I am constantly messing with them. I keep them for a couple of days to do the modifications and configurations for people. I really quite enjoy them. Of course, I can not use them to converse in them because I am not licensed. I am just into the technical aspect of the radio hobby and not the conversational aspect. I have set up many different kinds of radios, radio stations, antennas, and the such. I also repair and modify them.

Everything needs a lie filter. For instance: The turbo powered four cylinder Broncos are not what Ford say they are. They are pure garbage and should not have been released without extensive revisions. But as you mentioned, it does not come with a lie filter.
