Got a few of these for hill-walking. It's very easy to summon the GPS location of any other UV17 in the group - handy if the clouds come down.

The International Marine distress frequency is 156.8Mhz (Channel 16). This is the frequency ships keep watch on and which anyone in trouble would use to call Mayday.

Hi Fred, Also and understated use for these type of radios is marine vhf. Chirp hsve a list of channels in one of their libraries. Also the RNLI and Coastguard use "Channel Zero" aka 156.000 Mhz when they're on rescue jobs. Incidentally I've one of the earlier uv17 as well as the "pro" with the white on black display, the earlier was black on blue, yes works better in sunlight than the prettier pro.

You can't. The GPS works between other UV-17 Pro GPS radios with same firmware. They can send, receive and request GPS location.

Hi Fred, thank you for another great vid! Wish someone would make a decent review of the UV-18 pro max gps... It's supposed to be an upgraded UV-17 pro gps, but in a much improved package - however for some reason everyone seems to ignore it... I got it the other day to give it a try, and I have to say I was impressed.... It seems a very decent radio for the money, and nowhere near the dodgy build quality of yesteryear Baofengs. It actually feels like a solid well-made HT. As for reception, with the rubber duck on, it manages an impressive out-of-the-box airband reception in my area... have not tested it on marine/70cm/2m yet... 73 from Athens, Greece

@@CB-RADIO-UK Hi, thank you for your reply... Not sure if the -H model is the one... The Baofeng marketing strategy can get very confusing! When I was researching it, I had found out that the "simple" H or R models were inititally without the GPS feature and (at the time - a few months ago) only the "Pro Max" model had the module (on par with the "Pro" UV-17 version that also had it, in constrast with the non-pro UV17...). So this is the one I got, the UV-18 Pro Max... since then if the 'H" has the gps module, not sure, they may have renamed it ... again... 🙂

I thought the 17R had USB-C charging, but the pair I received did not, so I returned them. Just today I saw a pair of 17R's on Amazon that DID have USB-C charging. Same model number, neither the first set of the ones I just ordered had anything after 17R (like "pro" or "plus"), so it's so strange how the same radio can be so different. I did get a decent price of $24 USD for a pair of drab green 17R handhelds with USB-C charging on body & battery. So, at $12/ radio, and as long as they work, I'll keep 'em. Thanks again for a VG video Fred. 73!

Another excellent video Fred, thank you! Do you or does anyone here know if Baofeng Uv17 or Uv18 can receive and display DTMF CODES? For example, If i send DTMF code via Uv18 pro max to Quasheng k5/6 model, the audio comes, and it clearly shows on the screen the actual DTMF code. If i send DTMF code from Quasheng to any of my other Baofeng radios, audio comes but it does not show or display actual DTMF codes on the screen like Quansheng radio. Could you please make a short video on this topic please? Thank you!!

Hi, dont want to ask an annoying question, but im overloaded with choices for a HT....UV5R, UVK5(8), RA89, UV17 pro, and all the other 1000s of variants. The main thing is I need one that will fare well in the rain, without sacrificing too many good points. Doesnt have to be Digital.. You see, I was first looking for a mobile shack-in-a-box, but i realised what I *really* needed was a military radio. Not for any encryption etc, but for robustness and outdoor proofing. So I decided to just save a fortune and go for a HT... Can you offer any advice? Cheers..

If your not looking for scanning but want an easy to use reliable high powered PMR radio i would look at something simple like a Retevis RA-89. If you want to mod the radio and get all of the scanning freqs then it has to be a Quansheng or Retevis RA-79.

Some reviews say that the signal of the Baofeng UV18H model is a lot more 'clean' (lower spurs & harmonics) than the UV 17H. So it might be worth spending a little bit more and get the 18H version.
@CB-RADIO-UK6 ай бұрын
I will try and get one in for testing on PMR.
@mikesey16 ай бұрын
How many 'spurs & harmonics' do you expect from a low powered handheld? What there are, are probably in microwatts which won't annoy anyone. The American FCC have put all that garbage out to restrict the sale of cheap Chinese radios flooding the market.
@hugovanderzee49446 ай бұрын
@@mikesey1 Indeed you do not know what to expect from Chinese handhelds, that's why reviews are so helpful. Some reviews about the Baofeng UV-17H show that it is not a ‘clean’ handheld. They all show that the second harmonic is about 90% of the fundamental. This is considerable, more than some microwatts. I don’t think you can say that Chinese handhelds are per definition ‘garbage’. Maybe this was the case in the past, but there are some good products around. For example the Retevis RA89, which is similar to the Baofeng UV-17H. It is a solid and easy to use handheld, with a very clean signal. Fred did some good reviews on the RA89.

Whilst the flashlight is bright the bottom surface will get scratched up and reduce the brightness. Does look like a very silly place to put a flashlight. Might be worth cutting out a screen protector to size and use. That voice sounds like a darts referee saying 180‼️

Help me out generally, Fred. So the basis of it is it's a higher amplified radio converted to the CB (legal) range? Luke, I am your Father! NOOOOOO!!! Would that pick up FM radio stations better in a Concrete grocery store or factory? Or is that 'dark side' power just for transmit?
@CB-RADIO-UK6 ай бұрын
Hi. Kinda but its not a CB radio as thats 27 MHz and this is converted for 446 MHz PMR public radio band. Much less range than CB. Yes the darkside is a ref to the illegal power output on transmit. As far as FM goes i think a transistor radio might do better as its antenna is tuned for broadcast FM.

Sorry, I hate these cheap chargers that plug straight into the mains. At least with USB ones you can throw away the cheap power supply and use your own. I just don't trust them to be safe. Nice looking radio though.
