Of all the radios I have, this BTech 50X2 is still my favorite radio of all of them. I just had to replace the 50x2 in my truck with an Anytone 578 DMR radio and I am already regretting that decision. I miss being able to monitor 4 frequencies or sets of repeaters at the same time. All of the 4 50x2 radios that I have are pushing right at 100 watts instead of the 50 they are supposed to be doing.

How does this BTech UV50x2 50 watt dual band compare to a 80 watt Yaesu FT 298OR which cost less than the BTECH at around $149 BUT it is only a single band radio 144-148 with 3 watts audio and a factory 3 year warranty. Which is the better radio? The BTECH 50 watts has an extra band but 30 watts less than single band Yaesu 80 watt radio. Which one? Also I think like the Bao-Feng HT 5 UVR or 82 FHP you can listen to FM music while channel is clear on this BTECH UV50X2 dual band mobile radio.

Hi Jason, I’m an 81 year old submarine veteran from Loudon, TN, and am studying for my technicians license. I’m thinking about buying a Btech 50X2 radio PC04FTD1 programmable cable and Nagoya UT-72 antenna. I’m a newbie so not well versed on this stuff. I hav a hand held baofeng F8 HP now so this is a big leap for me. I wonder what range I can expect on the 50 x2. Thanks in advance for your response.

With any mobile radio and external antenna, you can expect to get a much farther range than a handheld. Several miles will be possible with this setup, depending on your location, perhaps 10-50 miles.

I have had mine for a few years now, had it since it first came out, put it in my SXS, replaced a TYT 9000. I Programmed the 50x2 to have the top two frequencies the same and the bottom two the same. Then the Top two frequencies, the top shows the Frequency, the bottom shows the name, same with the other half. This is useful out on the trail when a newbie doesn't know what frequency you are on. Most Rugged radios come with a name, so I can go to the name and then tell someone the Frequency to type into their (non rugged) radio. Got to say though, the TYT was just an all around better radio. Built better, way better speaker, solid knob, the scan speed is lightning fast, the buttons on the radio are simple and I can do everything on the front and not have to use the mic. The mic is unplugged while I am driving and the radio is hooked into my intercom system. The 50X2 has scan speeds that I think are even slower than the UV5R, absolutely painfully SLOW. The buttons aren't as intuitive, if I want to scan, the mic has to be plugged in. Speaker isn't very loud, the main knob if you scroll too fast, it stops going forward and goes backwards, very annoying. If it wasn't for dual band and FM radio I would sell it in a heart beat, I don't care if it puts out over 70w, I would be fine with 20w for what I do, I wish the TYT 9000 was dual band with FM, it would be perfect.

@@skinny4070 the tyt9000 is single band and comes in 2m, 70cm, or 220. i got rid of the 50x2, I hated the garbage knobs on it. i went with the tyt th8600 waterproof. it's a dual band, 25w radio. it doesn't have many features but it works well in my sxs.

I used a TH-9800 for a long while, it is a good radio. The mic is kinda hot. I didn't put this BTECH radio into my car, so I don't know how it performs mobile. But it does get good audio reports from the shack. Either one would likely work for you.

Do you need a license to operate these radios? How is this different from the bands that Rugged Radios offer? I just want to get a good range of communication between vehicles when off roading. I don't like the range I get from a cb radio.

These radios will go to different bands - some of them are Ham bands, for which you need a license. Those bands are what my show focuses on. But they will go to other bands also, such as Business/FRS/GMRS, etc. It depends on where you want to talk as to what license you might or might not need.

Just wanted to let you know I just happened to stumbled upon the answer to my querie..... I found Baofengtech had posted this quoted text........... "the UV-50X2 is FCC Part 15B Approved (you most likely were provided false information from those who requested the review). You can see this is also found in our 60 menus (versus the generic 50). We take a factory level product - and self engineer the software to met FCC emissions; as well as supporting and selling from the US. They may 'claim' they have what we have, to make a quick buck - they do not. We engineer our own firmware on our radios. gmctech these X series radios have really nice loud bodacious audio when you talk because it has adjustable Mic gain in the radio itself rather than the Mic. go to Menu 57 and turn it up to 40 to 45 and then you will sound louder than most anyone else on the air without sounding distorted or over modulated. That way you can talk in a quiet tone of voice about 5 inches from your Mic instead of having to eat the Mic on most Hand held radios! If using the radio in a noisy environment like your car driving with the windows rolled down, have the Mic gain down to 35 or 40 instead of 45 in a quiet room. Out of the box the Mic gain is set on 10 and that sounds pretty quiet!

It really depends on what you mean by "better" Is the Yaesu better built? Yes Is the Yaesu more powerful on 2M? Yes Does the Yaesu have the 440 band also? No Is the Yaesu more versatile? No So, define your question please. Asking "which is better" doesn't really have a direct answer. In some regards it is better, but if you want to TX on 70cm, the Yaesu wont' do that.

The Yaesu would likely be more reliable, due to being in business for longer and generally being a higher quality product. However, in a base station environment, which is usually climate controlled, you will have far less problems with any radio over a mobile install, which has to deal with weather temp changes, and bouncing around in a vehicle.

Unless you are really far away from your repeater, or really down in a valley or something, 30-watts won't be that much. It will make a small difference if you are talking on Simplex, though. However, in both instances...simplex and repeater work....a better antenna at a higher elevation would improve your signal much more than 30- watts would.

I purchased a UV-50X2 early after they hit the market. The first problem I ran accross was that the holes in the mobile bracket didn't match the threaded holes in the radio. I had to enlarge them to mount the radio to the mobile bracket. I should have stopped there. After the 1 year warranty ran out the display went 'wonky'. When powered up the third digit in the first line readout was blank, nothing, just nothing. If I selected that channel / line and keyed the mic, then the number magically appeared. Last, but certainly not least, I started to get reports of weak signals into the local repeater. I put a power meter inline and keyed up. while the radio power 'bar' showed full power being transmitted, the power meter (I tried three of them just to be sure) showed transmitted power at less than 10W which quickly started dropping until it got to about 1W in less than 2 minutes. The radio never got even slightly warm to the touch. This was into a dummy load with an SWR of 1.1:1. BTECH does not appear to support after the warranty period. I left them a message and NEVER got a reply. Lesson learned, you get what you pay for.

I just picked up one of these radios and a new power supply . the power supply is a 13.8v output . the antenna I'm using is a slim Jim 2m/70cm jpole. I rapped the balum like the instructions said to . the radio operates fine on low power but when I switch to high power and key up the radio display cuts off . any help would be greatly appreciated

@@stealthrazor7314 thank you. I figured it out . it was my power supply . the continuous power was only 9amp . switched over to a 12amp continuous with a 14amp surge and have had no more issues. Radio and antenna match up greatly. Can talk 21+- miles using simplex and have no problem hitting repeaters in my area. Thank you for the reply

It should be fine I would just carry extra fuses for the lighter plug FYI I've been reading some of the reviews It looks like the power drops after you've been talking on it for more than a minute and a half. so that means you can be using 50 watts of power then after a minute and a half it will drop down. So if you do get one this radio has a feature of timing you out meaning it will stop transmitting after a set amount of seconds I would have that feature turned on so that it can reset basically... If you get one just learn the limitations of the radio. it's a Chinese radio... I'm still considering getting one

IT DEPENDS ON THE ANTENNA. I FIND THAT THE UV5R AND FHP8 HT RADIOS GET BETTER RECEPTION AND BETTER SOUND IN THE SPEAKERS. JUST THE OPPOSITE AS YOU WOULD THINK THE MOBILE WOULD PICK UP FM BETTER ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL USING MAGNET MOBILE ANTENNA.

Oh - you were referring to the URL. I was looking at the main title and the title you have in the video that doesn't mention "power". These are nifty little radios but I hope they do some more software upgrades to allow simple scanning of memory channels and the ability to add or delete them from the scan without needing programming software.

Regarding the name change from “Baofeng” to “Pofung”, it seems to me that both of these are just Roman alphabet transliterations of the same original name in Chinese (presumably Mandarin). I think they realized that English-speakers are incapable of pronouncing Baofeng (for example, it’s definitely not “BAY-oh-fang” or even “BOW-feng” as most people including myself tend to say it). To resolve this, they seem to have switched the brand name to Pofung (“POE-fung”), which we can more easily pronounce correctly. In other words, I suspect it was actually “bO-fung” all along, so really it’s the same name written more explicitly for our benefit. If anyone else knows this to be incorrect please feel free to contradict me...

Since it's sold as a Ham Radio, it shouldn't be open for GMRS. BTECH is usually legit with their radios. But you might be able to mod it

Baofeng and pofung are pronounced the same in Chinese. pofung is just a more accurate romanization of the Chinese name. The name is derived from the area in China the radios are made. Wouxun is pronounced “oh-shun” kinda like the English word ocean

I have 3-4 friends in a local club who bought the FTM-400 and each one died in about 1.5 years. So don't kid yourself that it can't happen to a Yaesu either.

The FTM-7250 sells for about $220, so not just $20 more. I paid $145 for my KT-980 PLUS (same radio as the one featured here). However, to your point, it you want sustained output, you won't get it from this rig. Mine drops from 78w to 28w after a 2 minute transmission. I doubt the Yaesu does that, so yes I would pay $75 more for a Brand name rig if you want consistent output.

@@jasonbrown467 Yes it does (once the radio cools down). My PS has lots of power so it's not that. The Chinese radios just can't tolerate the heat from extended transmissions and so they cut the power back to try and keep them from getting damaged.

These things are crap. I've had two of them, the first one lasted 3 days. Then it wouldn't power off, then never came back on again. The second one runs 110 watts on UHF and will receive and transmit all the way to 520MHz . All the way through gmrs and business band even though the manual says it won't. There's just no quality control, it should perform exactly as stated in the manual and they randomly don't. Adjacent channel rejection is non existant. Try tuning to an FM broadcast station and you'll get three or four stations at once. The local NOAA broadcast comes in on the 5 freqs above and below. The rubber boot around the mic jack fits so poorly that it presses against the volume control and when you go to roll it it drags and when you hold it down to turn on or off it won't let you push it in all the way. 110 watts out of this tiny little radio? It'll melt. I'll have to open it up and turn it down. Save your money and get a kenwood.

All these radios are nothing more than glorified Chinese junk. It is amazing how many here in this country fall for the low price for the performance. I ditched all my Chinese radios and switched to Motorolas. These are single band radios and they perform flawlessly. Their front ends are second to none not to mention the crystal clear loud audio!

Did you notice the power start to drop? Heckuva good price for a dual bander but if you want sustained output, forget it. After an initial transmission on HP with 78 watts, after 2 minutes it will drop to about 28 watts ( I know, I have one just like the one featured). I guess you get what you pay for. On LP, it will drop from about 28 watts to 12 watts. The Chinese radios do NOT like sustained transmissions.

@@microminiskirt It IS a good radio for the price, as long as you don't mind a varied output. As for the 'Big Three' (ICOM, YAESU, KENWOOD), their models (particularly on high power) will stay at a sustained output. Unfortunately, with the Chinese radios....not. And yes, you're right, the fan spins up like a jet plane. Mobile you probably wouldn't hear it, but using this rig in the Shack..you definitely will.

I know this is late. But for a radio that's been modified in the u.s. for the U.S.. why would they have left 300mhz band in the radio. And as for btech, they can take a long walk off a short but deep water pier,. Customer service is nonexistent. The microphone audio level for my bf f8hp is lower no it than all the others I own. I emailed btech, and still waiting game for a reply. That was some time ago.

Not happy with Btech. Had to return mine. Thermal shut down. 45 second qso throws the safety circuit in to reboot. This radio is a victim of heat failure. If you can, Get a CPU fan and cool it.

Do you have one? Have you programmed it via computer? It's a simple process. Not sure why you would call it cheap Chinese junk. It is what it is. If you want to spend 600 bucks on a radio, have at it. For those who are more budget conscious, this is a prefect radio and likely does what yours does. Cheers.
