The Yaesu mobiles don't have memory banks. This is a deal breaker for some. On the FTM-500 there is no effective way to scan two different sets of memories (like one set on the A band and the other set on the B band). The radio is also missing a feature that is standard on many other radios where after a signal drops, you can pause for a variable length of time before resuming a scan. Yaesu's cheapest handhelds have both of these features. Yet they have left them out on their mobile lineup. This is why my two FTM-500s are sitting in their boxes... and I'm using my ICOM radios instead.
@HamRadio27 ай бұрын
Can't say that it makes that much difference to me
@moondog_radio7 ай бұрын
@@HamRadio2 yep. I would expect that is true for most. I do a lot of scanning of very busy systems. It's super frustrating to have the scan resume immediately after someone unkeys. You never get to hear the other person's response. At least that is my use case. All other radios I own have this feature (to pause before resuming)... except the Yaesu mobiles. Same thing is true of memory banks.

Love your video's! So I am not knocking your videos just frustrated with these manufacturers. I have to say though APRS right now is just not my thing. I don't travel enough to justify the expense of an APRS capable radio. There are three different Digital modes out there. Fusion, D-Star and DMR. Crazy that these manufacturers can't get it together and be on the same page when it comes to the digital voice mode. Icom's near repeater function for those who travel a lot is a really fantastic feature though! It would be nice to buy one radio and they all shared the same digital mode. I know, dream on and I am beating a dead horse! I have had the Yaesu 400, ft 3D and ft 70. Sold them all. Not really into the VOIP thing and the few digital repeaters in the area are not used heavily other than for a few nets and some owners put restrictions on them. So for now I'll just stick with analog. I use the Alinco DR-735 as a base and I am very pleased with the RX audio and TX audio reports are great. What little bit of driving around I do I just use an HT with an external mobile antenna. The Alinco 735 is a simple radio to operate. But then I am a simple person! Hi, hi! You have much more experience with various V/UHF radios than I do, BUT I Think its a shame that you overlooked 10 meter SSB mobile radios for Tech's. (possibly another video I missed?). 10 meters SSB is a great introduction to the joys and longer range capabilities of HF, like legally talking all over the world from Mobile (POTA or Home) with an under $300 rig (new), like the QT-60. They don't have all the bells and whistles of an Icom IC-7300 or Yaesu FT-710, but you really don't Need all the bells and whistles to talk all over the world and have a completely different experience than with V/UHF FM. To me, V/UHF FM are great workhorse's, but 10 meter SSB is for Fun! Might as well enjoy Cycle 25 while its here! 73 mike N4ONL
@HamRadio27 ай бұрын
The QT-60 radio is junk. Realistically, most of those "10M only" radios aren't worth the money you pay for them. The front ends aren't good, the audio is poor and they have spurious emissions. This is why I don't recommend them
@CriticalThinker-427 ай бұрын
@HamRadio2 Many people would disagree with you about the QT-60, including Josh - HRCC (Ham Radio Crash Course) who is Not known for recommending radios that emit spurious emissions. ( SEE HRCC Episode: "Ham Radio Technicians! Get On Ten Meter Parks On The Air! (Radioddity QT60)" ) Case In Point: Josh also recommends the Baofeng GT-5R because it meets the FCC’s spurious emissions standards that other Baofengs don’t. Typically if the audio quality is mentioned for QT-60 reviews, its reported to be very good, both in TX and RX (Josh, HRCC,...), and it has good Digital Noise reduction. Plus the QT-60 can be unlocked to also do 12 meters for when Tech's upgrade, therefore its Not in Your stated class of ""10M only" radios". Yes, as Licensed Ham's we can modify or build and use Any radio as long as we don't radiate spurious emissions above the FCC's limits. But spurious emissions, if present, can be reduced to below the FCC’s standards with inexpensive external filtering, such as a HF TVI (TV Interference) Filter, or Band Pass, or Low Pass filters. Also the QT-60 appears to be built on Fiberglass rather than cheap Phenolic PCB’s (Printed Circuit Boards) showing a dedication to quality construction. Do you also have problems with old timers using Out Dated tube type AM equipment that’s Not up to todays level of bells and whistles, like Steve N4LQ and their multiple AM nets? Many Ham’s consider DX-60’s… to be “Junk” also, do You? If your going to call a rig “Junk” shouldn’t you also quantify Your definition of “Junk”? Bottom line, to each their own. We shouldn’t dissuade other based upon our prejudices, lest we be labeled “Sad Hams”. 73 mike N4ONL

Techs can't use FM on 10m and the quad band radios don't support SSB.

Best 6 meter mobile? Weather spotters here are on 6 meter.

Weather spotters around here are on 2M. There aren't many 6M only radios

Do any of these mobile radios also work on GMRS? Yeah, yeah, I don't really care what the bureaucrats say at the FCC.
@HamRadio22 ай бұрын
You can mod them to do GMRS, yes.

@@HamRadio2how? Anyone able to link me? I'm no electronics engineer so I don't plan on removing a flux capacitor myself. 😊

Search KZbin. I've never done it but if you studied for your Ham license, you'd have some training on how to do it

@@HamRadio2 Do you know anyone who took their ham radio license recently who didn't just game the exam (i.e. memorize the correct answer)?? Not me. Jason, you should have a care package in your mail today.

The reason it gets returned is because TYT quality control is terrible - you might get a good one or you might not. And if you are outside of Amazon's return window when it dies you will be stuck with a brick. Mine died before 6 months - outside the Amazon window but well within the manufacturer's window. I could not get a repair or replacement. I have two other TYT radios (8600 and 7800) that have not failed (yet - crossing fingers). I am not inclined to spend any more money on TYT radios.

I wonder why the Yasu Ft-891 did not make the list.

The first radio rated: “not sure if it works for Apple/IOS, …..I didn’t research that”. “I used it a few times …..and couldn’t get it to work just right, but that wasn’t the radio’s fault”. And this radio makes your “BEST OF” list? Sponsorship has gotten to you man. BEST OF should be 3, maybe 4 radios, NOT the eleven you have to name to keep your sponsors happy. Sad

Maybe it's because no one wants to have a radio with the same name as the The Young Turks TYT liberal progressive KZbin channel. 😅

Oh ... you're giving people VERY bad info.... guess I'll be un-subbing. NO ONE should be making a faceless radio that requires you to give up access to all the data on your phone. to use. I came here to see the best and you're showing me the worst to start with that NO ONE EVER SHOULD BUY !!!!!!!!!!!

Great radio. I caught them on sale for $250. My YL is a ham. I bought 3. I programed All the same. My truck, her SUV and the base. You can run dual mics. One plugged into the head and one into the rf unit. I have a desk mic and a hand mic depending on my mood or if I'm on a net. Great video I'm all ICOM.756proIII,2730A, 9700 & a T-90a 2m,70cm, 6m hand held. W9DLP 73
