Ever wondered about Baptism in the Bible? Dr. Brant Pitre looks at Jesus' dialogue with Nicodemus to reveal the truth about Baptism in the Bible and what it accomplishes. Dr. Pitre then turns to other texts in the Bible to show the validity of infant baptism as found in the Bible.

now way. Simply not true. John was baptizing people before and after Christ was baptized. Baptism simply is identification. In the Old testament people were baptized to identify with the Jews. John Baptized to identify people with the coming Messiah, and we are baptized to identify with the death of Christ. Baptism does nothing more than identify true Christians, it saves no one. That is why Paul the Apostle did not baptize, and even said that Christ sent him not to baptize but preach the Gospel, because only believing the Gospel saves.

@@FBCTrona First, please be informed that I am not a bible expert or scholar, and whatever I write or say is merely to share my thoughts or beliefs as a Catholic Christian. You seem to have misread or misunderstood me... I did not say "the Gospel is all the commands and precepts of scripture", rather "the gospel of Christ is comprised of all His teachings, commands, principles, and doctrines set forth in the synoptic gospels ..." (which are in the N.T.). The terms Scripture(s) and Bible are synonymous --- that is, referring to the O.T. & N.T. --- and to say "all the commands and precepts of scripture" would therefore include all the Jewish religious and cultural practices/traditions, or the Mosaic Laws. We have no issue, I believe, that Christ detests various Jewish religious and cultural traditions/practices that are either contrary to His moral teachings/commands, or that of the Father. Among those are the thorough washing of hands before eating for "purification", and circumcision (as you mentioned) for "salvation". Peace ...

@@morelmaster Thanks John, but it does not fit. God could never be in a man unless that man has been imputed with the righteousness of God. You find the same thing in Acts 2 where the believers received the Holy Spirit then later were baptized and added to the church. The Old Testament Saint never had the indwelling Holy Spirit because they never could be made perfectly righteous, so the Holy Spirit could "Come upon them" but never in them, nor reside in them. But one thing you are right on, they were given tongues so Peter could witness it and the Jews knew the gentiles were now part of the church. Paul the apostle said the only thing he cared about was that whether Christ was in you or not I Cor. 2:2, yet in I Cor. 1:17 Paul made it clear that he was not sent by Christ to baptize. Jesus said the same, and Baptized only his disciples. Did these men not care for the salvation of others?

When St. Peter gave us the keys of the kingdom in Acts 2:38.. and those who accepted Peter’s word were baptized and that day about 3000 were baptized..only believers are baptized and baptism always followed immediately after repentance being filled with the Holy Spirit. Babies were never baptized. In baptism the Holy Spirit baptizes us into Jesus body ,His church 1 Corinthians 12:13.This baptism is a legal transaction where we are joined to Jesus in Jesus death, burial and resurrection and are now seated with Jesus in heavenly places. @@seanrathmakedisciples1508 This is from my blog article: In the conversation Jesus is having with Nicodemus, our Lord says to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (Jn 3:3). The Greek phrase often translated “born again” (γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν or gennatha anothen in the English transliteration) also occurs in V.7 in which Jesus says, “Do not marvel that I said to you, “You must be born again.” The Greek word anothen sometimes can be translated “again,” but in the New Testament, it most often means “from above” or “from heaven” (cf. Jn 3:31). In the King James Version, which I am using, the only two times it is translated “again” are in John 3:3 and 3:7. Every other time it is given a different rendering. However, we have our mental equivalent in Vv.5-6, in which Jesus says, ““Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” Now, in V.3, our Lord declares that one must be “born again” to enter the kingdom of God, while in V.5 he reiterates more clearly that one must be “born of water and spirit” to enter the kingdom of God. Thus, the expression “born again” refers to the sacrament of baptism in water and Spirit which is salvific. One who is born or reborn “of Spirit” is born “from above” or “from heaven.” Jesus does say on another occasion, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved” (Mk 16:16). One cannot enter the kingdom of heaven unless they are saved, and this requires not only belief in Jesus but also the sacrament of initiation that washes away the stain of original sin and marks the new life in the Spirit. From Early sacred tradition: ” ‘And dipped himself,’ says [the Scripture], ‘seven times in Jordan.’ It was not for nothing that Naaman of old, when suffering from leprosy, was purified upon his being baptized, but it served as an indication to us. For as we are lepers in sin, we are made clean, by means of the sacred water and the invocation of the Lord, from our old transgressions; being spiritually regenerated as newborn babes, even as the Lord has declared: ‘Except a man be born again through water and the Spirit, he shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.’” St. Irenaeus, Fragment, 34 (A.D. 190) “[W]hen they come to us and to the Church which is one, ought to be baptized, for the reason that it is a small matter to ‘lay hands on them that they may receive the Holy Ghost,’ unless they receive also the baptism of the Church. For then finally can they be fully sanctified, and be the sons of God, if they be born of each sacrament; since it is written, ‘Except a man be born again of water, and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.’…[O]nly baptism of the Holy Church, by divine regeneration, for the kingdom of God, may be born of both sacraments, because it is written, ‘Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.’” St. Cyprian of Carthage, To Stephen, 71:72 (A.D. 253) Etc. allaboutcatholicism.com/2020/10/11/baptism-being-born-again/

@@seanrathmakedisciples1508 Once a child attains the age of moral reasoning while having been nurtured in the Christian faith at home and in the Church, they can decide for themselves whether to live up to their baptismal commitments and persevere in faith. These life-long baptismal commitments also apply to people who have been baptized in adulthood. One isn’t automatically and irrevocably saved just by being baptized and consciously making an initial profession of faith. The important thing for the infant or any human being is that they receive the initial grace of justification and forgiveness for being implicated in the sin of Adam and becoming a partaker of the divine nature through the water of cleansing and regeneration in the Spirit. In Judaism, the ritual of circumcision ( Heb. בְּרִית מִילָה / brit milah) is a symbol of one’s partnership with God. This partnership with YWHW is a mysterious covenant that surpasses human comprehension. It is a pledge of unconditional devotion, no matter what may transpire between God and an individual. It is a bond that is absolute and immutable. For this reason, a Jew is circumcised as an infant, although it hasn’t yet developed its capacity for reasoning or making moral judgments since the covenant of circumcision is not an intellectual or calculated partnership. The circumcision of an infant demonstrates that the connection between the Jews and YHWH is beyond human rationale. Baptism proceeds from the rite of circumcision, as to how God intended that a spiritual circumcision must take place which the physical aspect of circumcision represented in the Old Covenant. Baptism, therefore, is a sign of inward, spiritual “circumcision.” Baptism is a rebirth to a new life with God and being reborn from above. Although circumcision isn’t a sacrament but a symbolic ritual in Judaism, there are significant parallels between the two that show how baptism fulfills circumcision, as the Old Covenant finds its fulfillment in the New that has been established by Christ through the outpouring of his blood. St. Paul points out that baptism has replaced circumcision. He refers to the sacrament as “the circumcision of Christ” and “the circumcision made without hands” (Col 2:11-12). The latter reference recalls the passage above taken from the Book of Deuteronomy which refers to the physical ritual as essentially being a circumcision of the heart of all the Israelites including the circumcised male infants who will eventually grow into manhood expected to abide by God’s covenant. When a Jewish boy reaches the age of thirteen, the family celebrates his Bar Mitzvah, on which occasion he is regarded as ready to observe religious moral precepts and eligible to participate in public worship at the synagogue. The boy’s father offers a prayer of thanksgiving to God for relieving him of being morally responsible for his son’s actions, because he is primarily held accountable for the boy’s religious and spiritual nurturing until he has reached adolescence. This same principle holds in the Catholic faith with respect to baptizing infants. Infant baptism has its roots in Judaism and is an ecclesial tradition handed down to us from the apostles who themselves were Jewish. Anyway, if the nascent Church didn’t practice infant baptism, we should doubt whether Paul would have used the rite of circumcision as a parallel for the sacrament. Further, we read in the New Testament that Lydia was baptized with her “household” after she converted (Acts 16:15). The Philippian jailer who was converted by Paul and Silas was baptized that same night along with his household. In fact, he was baptized “with all his family” (Acts 16:33). And in his greetings to the church in Corinth, Paul writes, “I did baptize also the household of Stephanus” (1 Cor 1:16). In the above passages, Paul uses the Greek word oikon (οἶκον) for the English word “household.” This accusative masculine singular noun literally means “a dwelling” and by implication “a family.” If children weren’t part of these families, Paul could have simply written that “she and her husband” or “he and his wife” were baptized. Nor would it make sense for him to have used the all-inclusive word "household" or "family" if all children weren't included as members. The New Testament (Covenant) Church and the Early Church practiced infant baptism. For He came to save all through means of Himself-all, I say, who through Him are born again to God-infants, and children, and boys, and youths, and old men.” St. Irenaeus, Against Heresies, 2,22:4 (A.D. 180) allaboutcatholicism.com/2020/09/30/infant-baptism/

carlos thanks for your reply. Actualy this was one doctrine that Luther never changed. Luther believed in Baptismal regeneration his entire life, and never became a born again believer. You mentioned two scriptures, One in James where James says faith without works is dead (James 2:17,20,26) Please read the entire chapter and you will notice that he is not speaking before God, but before men (Vs. 18). A man who is saved by faithcan not show his salvation by showing his faith, he can only prove to men that he has put his faith in Christ by showing that salvation has changed his life. Paul made it clear that when a man comes to Christ "old things are passed away, behold all things are become new." (II Corinthians 5:17) If he never shows that he is new,, it never shows in his lifestayle, then James declares that his faith was dead, in other words he may say he had faith in Christ, but it was a lie. A true christian with Christ in his life will have a new life, if not, then he never got saved to begin with. Also Paul says faith without charity as well (I Cor. 13). If you look at Romans 5:5 you will see that when a person comes to Christ by faith they are given as a gift the Love of Christ. John wrote in I John 3 that if a man does not have this love than he is not saved and abides in Darkness. But what Paul is mentioning in I Cor. 13 is dealing with the misuse of spiritual gifts for personal reasons. and the word Charity (Agape in the greek) simply means love, and Paul says none of my good works, or my faith matters if I do not have love for the brethren. Please carry on the conversation.

@@FBCTrona James said we are justified by works, no matter how you try to talk that away. In Romans 2, St. Paul says that eternal life is reward for works. Matthew 12 says by our words will we be judged (what we say, as opposed to just what we believe). Matthew 25 says those who don't feed the poor will be in trouble. I know there are verses that also talk about faith, but you have to ignore a bunch of verses to believe what you believe. St. Paul even says that both faith and works without love are nothing, so arguably he might say this faith alone/faith and works debate is misleading.

@@paulmiller3469 Thanks for your reply Paul. First when a Person is saved, they are redeemed the Bible says, it also says they are made righteous. The word Justified in the scripture means two things, for one to be imputed with Righteousness, and it also means to render or to Judge one righteous. Both are used in the passage you refer to. Notice James 2:21, and then notice vs. 23. This is exactly what Paul taught, that Abraham was saved by Faith, and nothing done in his flesh, that is works only makes you a debter and thus put under judgement and damned. Read Romans 4:1-5 . When james said that abraham was justified by offering his son, then you would have to either admit that a person is saved by Sacraficing their son, or it is something else. James whole argument is to be a doer of God's word James 1:23-25. as For the Mathew 12 and 25 I have no problem with, for Jesus is speaking of who a true disciple is. A Christian is saved by faith alone, but if his life does not change then Paul taught that his faith was not real, and thus he is not saved. The verses you pick are a cunundrum for the catholic church witch in official Catholic Dogma, James j. Mcgovern 1909 stated on page 327 under salvation that a catholic is saved by the sacraments of baptism, and maintained by the sacrament of communion. What you are telling me is something different, your saying a person is saved by good deeds like wholsome words, feeding the poor, and offering your son. Bit confusing. Hope we can keep the dialogue going.

Protestant defence. First and foremost unity in Christ is important. And I think Brant Pitre is an excellent scholar and teacher. Up there with NT Wright and the best of them. 1.Context is important to all believers 2. Context of 'children' seems to be pretty plainly talking about generations not infants. 3. Why would an Infant not experiencing any sin yet need forgiveness of sins? Sin is only sin if it's knowledge of sin. An infant is unaware of sin in mind. It's also rejects the choice of the individual/free will which is a gift of God given us to choose Him rather than him forcing himself on us.

Baptism is the circumcision of Christ. Just as a Jew would circumcise someone to enter into the Covenant of God in the Old Testament - including babies, so too the baptism of the new Covenant is given to babies as well and to everyone who needs to be baptized to enter the New Covenant of God.

Amen Brother. So many miss this and are caught up in perverted or distorted theology. There is no “praying Jesus into your heart” for salvation in the Bible. Faith is a verb. By faith we are saved. They were baptizing before nicodemus and after nicodemus in John too. Context. Belief leads to action/faith. “Shall” is a future tense word. If one (truly) believes he shall...ask what do and then “do” to be saved. One then does what the scripture says to do. It’s straightforward. We hear, we believe, we start repent, we confess, we ask what shall I do to be saved, we do what the Bible says to do for salvation, etc. Acts 2 :38. It’s a lot of work yet some are convinced there is no work/action/verb/faith in the process. Inward faith with outward confession... sounds so wrong. Sounds like someone wants to “hide it under a bushel” Good stuff.. In Him, George

Jesus left us a church not a book. The bible was put together 300 years after Jesus resurrection by the Catholic Church. The church is the pillar of truth says the bible. St. Paul says we follow the tradition not the human tradition but sacred one. Nowhere in the Bible says all that we believe is only in the Bible. St John says if everything Jesus did and said would be written there wouldn't be enough books to write it.

I wonder why Peter is always placed first in the list of apostles (Matt. 10:1-4, Mark 3:16-19, Luke 6:14-16, Acts 1:13 etc...), we even sometimes see that they ( the apostles ) dissociate his name from the group of apostles and call him only by name and don't include it in the group, as if he wasn't an apostle, as if he was their chef like Michael although being an angel himself is named being "with his angels" ( we can see it for example in Mark 16:7; Luke 9:32 etc... but and especially in 1 Cor 9:5 "Have we no right to lead about a wife that is a believer, even as the rest of the apostles, and the brethren of the Lord, *and Cephas?"* I ask: So Saint Peter wasn't a disciple? ). It was not by chance that they named Peter that way, it was due to his position.

Why are you telling people that water will save them? The faith in Jesus is what saves them not the dunking in water. They wouldn't get baptised in the name of Jesus if they didn't have faith in him. This guy is so off. He said we need to understand it in Context, but then totaly ignores vs. 6 where Jesus makes it clear that the water birth is birth of the flesh, that is natural birth. And in Acts 2 peter speaks about baptism for the remission of sins, and the baptism he is talking about is the same baptism as in chapter 1 and that was the baptism of the Holy Spirit into Christ, and you will notice there was no water, just believers. Note, the word baptism, which is a greek word that simply means "Put Into" has nothing to do with water unless it notes it in the passage. For some reason every time in our english language we hear the word baptise we think of water, and yet it has nothing to do with it, in fact no where in greek literature outside the bible is the word Baptidzo {greek) ever used about water. In Acts 2:38, Peter says to the multitude, “Repent and be baptized..” Protestants use this verse to prove one must be a believer (not an infant) to be baptized. But the Greek translation literally says, “If you repent, then each one who is a part of you and yours must each be baptized” (“Metanoesate kai bapistheto hekastos hymon.”). In Acts 16:15, Paul baptized Lydia and her entire household. The word “household” comes from the Greek word “oikos” which is a household that includes infants and children. We must read the NT in its original Greek to understand what is actually meant.

Yes, we are a herd, we eat the grass of the field (information garbage) and look for a grain of truth in it. Everything as God ordered for the treatment of fallen sinners (Genesis 3: 18,21). The skins of the animal can only be removed through the tree of life (cross).

Baptism is required. It must be by immersion. Those who perform it must have authority from God. Only those age 8 and above qualify for baptism, because children under 8 have no need. The power of the atonement covers all children who die before the age of 8. Infant baptism is an abomination before the Lord. Peter states it should be done at age 8!

@@decunha75 The information in my post is from several sources and as the scriptures say...Line upon line and precept upon precept. Do you believe in Christ? I will assume so since your asking for scriptural verses. Baptism is stated in many verses so I will assume you believe it is required. (If not please say so and I will direct you to many verses for it. Age 8 is stated by Peter when talking about saved by baptism as in the days of Noah...8 were saved clearly defining age 8 for baptism. 1 Peter 3. In order to learn as much truth as the Lord has revealed unto man, one must be willing to search and study and look for the restoration spoken of by Peter that was to come. Ask any questions but be precise in what you would wish to know.

@@decunha75 1 Peter 3:20-21..."Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ". Hope this helps my friend.

Not born again or born anew. Born from Above! Look into the meaning of the word. PS. Jesus was not a Jew

I was baptized when I was an infant but did not become reborn until I was 45. I was reborn not through Christ but through the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit guided me to Jesus Christ. All backwards

Peter said " You must be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ." Catholic " fathers " chose to do it their way. No name of Jesus, no Holy Spirit.

Peter said " Baptize in the name of Jesus Christ." The catholic church has chosen disobedience to Peter and God. Peter said first repent. No infant can repent.

Wow this guy is talking to people that don’t read scripture and trying to fool them too. Read your bibles but pray that God gives you understanding.

Are you serious ? Why did John baptize Jesus ? ( Matthew 3:11 ) Since Jesus was supposedly without sin , he had nothing to repent of . Why John the baptist was not from the disciple of Jesus ?

Moulay Jalti Jesus wanted to be baptized so that he could “fulfill all righteousness” you have to remember he was setting the example for all of us to follow, fulfilling the entire will of His Father, & in Baptism the Holy Spirit comes upon Him.

The fact that he was baptized by John has always been an embarrassment to the church The gospels offer no explanation for Jesus's baptism , apart for the meaningless explanation given in * Matthew 3:14-15 * ( to fulfill all righteousness ) Other passages , which indicate that Jesus did not consider himself sinless , are also an embarrassment to the church : Mark 10:18 , Luke 18:19

That's protestant teaching where protestants concentrate solely on forgiveness of sins Jesus says to nicodemus that he need to be born of water and spirit John 3:5..He received the holy spirit when he exited the water Luke 3:22...baptism and to accept Jesus as your lord and savior is protestant teaching ,pastors teach you protestant teachings there's more to baptism than what they teach.. 1) to become a child of God 2) forgiveness of sins. 3) to receive inheritance 4) to receive the promise of the father ...the promise is also for children acts 2:39....children again(when the term used the whole household) acts 16:31.. The other topic is a different teaching about the word (good).? Jesus is God the second person of the holy trinity. But he does the fathers will. That's what he did to leave all the teachings for us.. Embarrassment where.. It's your imagination..

Pitre again changes the Word of God. He misquoted God. Jesus is The Word of God. Jesus said " You must be born again of water and the spirit." You must be born again of BOTH.

Peter said " be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ." The catholic church 300 years later made up " the trinity" and does not baptize in the name of Jesus Christ. Therefore not only is there no forgiveness , but there is no gift of the Holy Spirit. The catholic church chose to be disobedient to God.
