I'm a Protestant, but I have friends and family who are Catholic, so I love conversing these topics and learning from each other. To me, it makes sense why Jesus would leave John with the responsibility of taking care of His mother while having other brothers. Reason 1: John was the only one who remained with Jesus while He was being crucified. He trusted John would take care of her. Reason 2: Jesus would have left the care of His mother to someone of the faith. Remember, Jesus's brothers did not believe in Him (John 7:5). Jesus says in Mark 3:33-35 that His mother and brothers are those who do the will of God. He would have left His mother in the care of a believer and John was the only one still at His side. So yes, Jesus had blood brothers, but He left His mother in the care of His brother John because He considered Him a believer.

I think people misinterpreted this because they truly understood it and would have to be accountable for their works or lack there of in their lives ;-). It's easy to say faith alone because then your accountability is conveniently wiped away....
