In this step-by-step guide, we'll break down the process of determining the precise cutting length of a stirrup, turning a complex calculation into an approachable task. 📏 We'll be using a column with dimensions 400mm in width and 600mm in depth, featuring main bars with a diameter of 20mm and 8mm stirrups, each with a clear cover of 40mm.
Before we delve into the calculations, let's set the foundation. In this four-legged stirrup arrangement, the cutting length for stirrup-1 and stirrup-2 is identical, simplifying our approach.
The crucial formula for calculating the cutting length "L" is:
L = [(2 × (a + b)) + hook length) − (90° bend + 135° bend)]
First, we establish "a" by finding the value of "X," which represents the center-to-center spacing between the longitudinal bars horizontally. Using the formula:
X = (Width of column − (2 × Clear cover + 2 × Diameter of stirrup + 2 × Diameter of main bar / 2)) / 3
We find X = 111.33mm.
With "X" in hand, we determine "a":
a = (2 × X) + (2 × ½ × Diameter of main bars) + (2 × ½ × Diameter of stirrup)
a = 250.66mm.
Next, we calculate "b":
b = Column depth - (2 × Clear cover + 2 × ½ × Diameter of stirrup)
b = 512mm.
Now, onto the grand finale! The cutting length "L" for stirrup-2 takes shape:
L = [(2 × (a + b)) + hook length) − (90° bend + 135° bend)]
Substituting values:
L = [(2 × (250.66mm + 512mm)) + (10 × Diameter of rebar) − (3 × 2 × Diameter of rebar + 2 × 3 × Diameter of rebar)]
The result:
L = 1589.32mm.
And there you have it! 🎉 The cutting length for both stirrup-1 and stirrup-2 in this four-legged stirrup arrangement is 1589.32mm. Empower yourself with this newfound knowledge and conquer your construction projects with confidence.
