Thank you for this recording! I saw him perform around the same time in Vancouver (Mozart). What a big brassy sound he has here. Nice to hear the worlds best horn player (at the time) make mistakes too (5:50) :). Makes the rest of us not feel so bad when we try to play this. I see he has the same dent on the bottom of his horn that I do too. Haha! We miss you Barry!

wow...that's the first note I heard him even scratch......at that time I was playing principal horn in the Maryland Symphony Orchestra (in Hagerstown) and he was the conductor. Great musician!

A highly gifted horn player with terrible musical taste. I love the theatrical way he finished

I have never heard anyone say this, but I couldn’t agree more. No soul in that playing.

I asked Barry Tuckwell if he could give me some tuition, he said that he had no time, so he recommended me to Neal Sanders second horn to Dennis Brain in the Philharmonia. Anyway everything turned out for the better. I agree that BT's interpretation has no subtly or soul, tending on the course side.

I beg to disagree. This is the work of an 18 year old Richard Strauss...a work of youth, played with the exuberance that it totally appropriate. This is not Strauss 2....and I personally knew Mr. Tuckwell, being the Principal Horn player in one of his orchestras (he was conducting). He approach to the horn and music was VERY thoughtful. Although he did have some playing mannerism that put some people off...but, terrible musical taste: NO WAY.

@@davidcottrell1308 I don't really understand what Strauss 1 or 2 has to do with musical taste. I've listened to many exuberant Strauss 1st concertos out there like Dohr's or Clevenger's, and there is a huge difference in musical taste. I don't like Baborak's Strauss, but I would never say he has poor musical taste just because I don't like the way he plays it, so it's not an opinion out of the blue. Don't take me wrong: I loved, still love and will always love and admire Barry Tuckwell. I've purchased his records and listened to most of his discography. That's precisely why I think he had bad musical taste. Let me also highlight that this opinion is shared by some other people here, despite being a strong comment for a dead horn legend, so possibly I'm just expressing what other people already believed. Writing this like "His awesome horn playing skills exceeded his musicianship" would have just made the message nicer, but the content would have remained the same. No disrespect meant for B.T. or people who loved him. He is a horn legend.
