This job is done here by people who learnt it practically while working at a dentist and going to "job school" 2 days a week. But also learning a lots more meanwhile (by working and going to school): Languages, doing calculations in a dental practice, medecine things...

Good 'ole Pell Grants. I remember them well. Ronny Raygun wanted to end them back when folk like me (lower-middle income) were depending on them to make it through college (1980 timeframe). I put $300 for "parents' contribution" on my financial aid form and that was no lie. Worked two jobs in college, paid my loans off after graduating, got a decent job in the mid 80's. No silver platter here, just did the best I could to make sure I could get a degree. Education is the path.

I'm from Michigan and most areas are NOT bike-friendly AT ALL!! Most of the US is built for cars. Only certain cities have made any effort to be more bike-friendly. On top of that, we have so much urban sprawl, in a huge country...consider yourselves lucky!! We desperately need to create a modern public transport system and REAL trains but it feels like a distant dream...

ReerBaadia Capitalism! Although I feel the need to point out that the first college she went to, University of Detroit Mercy, is a private Catholic university so it costs a lot. She transferred to a 2-year public community college, which is much cheaper, probably about $4000 per year. You can get a degree at some 4-year public universities for less than $10000 a year but she said twice that she "got a free ride" meaning that she's not paying any tuition at all. It's the extra college fees and expenses that can cost thousands that's hurting her.
