@warriorwatch24069 ай бұрын
@@dinovaldo9341 For me, the reason the Barakoa beat out the Abavuthana is more due to their avian counterparts lacking personality. If it makes any sense, they don't feel... Intelligent, at least not in the same way the Barakoa did. They feel more like spirits than a species, which I have no doubt is intentional and gives them a very distinct feeling, but in doing so a lot of the personality was lost. They don't use tools (conventional or otherwise) like the Barakoa did. They also don't talk like the Barakoa did (while the Abavuthana do make noises I don't think they have a language, but I could be wrong). Granted, they do still trade and assumedly built the stuff in their grove. But even then, their trades are almost all for either food or gold nuggets and their grove's architecture makes the Barakoa's village look advanced by comparison. To simply what I'm trying to say, the Barakoa felt like a society deeply devoted to their creator, while the Abavuthana are still deeply devote to their creator but don't feel like a society. I do still really enjoy the unnatural and alien feeling of the Abavuthana though, and of course if I'm not making any sense do tell me.

So... Are Barakas actually racist? I mean, if you look at it at face value, sure. They're little tribesmen in masks and their chieftan is a fat sun demigod.... But in order for something to be racist... well, it needs to actually be "Racist". What is that supposed to be racist towards? You might say "African culture", yeah, but which one though. Plenty of them involve masks for different purposes, sun symbology; hell, I would even say that Barako has some elements of Mesoamerican culture with a face of gold and stuff, and looking more Mayan than, say, Maasai. If those were little knights from a Canterlot-sounding castle, speaking English-french-german-simlish, would people say it's racist towards all Europeans? If those were little samurai warriors, speaking in anime grunts and vaguely japanese sounding gibberish, would people say it's racist towards Asians, or even just Japanese? If those were little cartoon romans with big shields that looked like Marvin the Martian and yelled military "Hut"s and "Hrumpf"s, would people say it's racist towards... Anyone? If this is a racist caricature, then of whom exactly, because I cannot pin them to any existing culture. And if you say "Africans because they're tribesmen with a fat chief" THAT'S racist. Cause first of all, Africa isn't the only place with tribal culture. Barako's fat, so he could be more a caricature of a polynesian stereotype. But you cannot take a trope of "Tribe people" and reserve them for Africa specifically. As for why the author changed them... Well, He saw some streamer or whoever making..... problematic comments about the Barakas. But I would say that's more the streamers problem... In fact, no I am 100% sure that it is. Moral of the story: Don't play the social justice game. You will always lose in time. No matter how holy thou art, there will be someone holier than thou sooner or later.

There were some benefits with the remodel such as better animations but there were a lot more losses to its design change. Barako could speak which was one of the biggest losses in my opinion because it made the Barakoa feel more alive. With the rework also some things such as spears and darts have completely lost their hook. So in my opinion overall the update was an L mechanically and made the Barakoa which are now the Umvuthana less interesting. The design isn't too shabby though and the animations are a lot better than Barakos. Personally I liked the Barakoa more because they had more too them separating them from the rest of the mindless (albeit cool looking) mobs that are already in Mowzies mobs which are just monsters. Just wish he hadn't turned the Barakoa into a exact copy of the Biloko design wise both being more like monsters than a tribe. Hope Mowzie at least takes more of the good parts of the Barakoa and put them into the Umvuthana. Me personally the best scenario is for Mowzie to just change them back and realizes he cant satisfy everyone, especially complainers who cant appreciate his work.

I think we can have a middle ground between those who want barakas back and those whose doesn’t want the “racist caricature” by adding them as neutral villager basically, they would be naturally passive, and you could trade with them for items that can’t be found somewhere else. They will only attack if you attack first, and they will defeat nearby monsters, so living with them is a valid strategy. They will be somewhat hard to kill, and you will get nothing if you kill them, so best keeping them alive and well And like many people here said, the birds need voiceline to add to the personality

I don't understand the argument for the barakoas being racist. Their designs and inspiration have nothing to do with any depictions of African tribes or their cultures. The barakoas are just goblinoid creatures that are located in a tribal setting, it's not fair to immediately assume that they are meant to be representations of Africans. Just because they may vaguely resemble something that might appear to be a stereotype doesn't mean they themselves are meant to perpetuate or represent said stereotype. By that logic characters like knuckles the echidna from the sonic the hedgehog series should also be classified as racist since his character design has dreads that are reminiscent of a black person, furthermore knuckles is the last of his kind who were a tribe of indigenous echidnas that were located on a remote island that possesed weapons such as spears and dressed up as what you would perceive stereotypical African tribes to look like (facial paint, gold necklaces, tiki/ caveman esque attires, feathered clothing, Pygmy skin tones, ect ect). Should we throw that character, his people, and by extension many other characters across fiction away simply because they will offend a small minority of people online who don't even know anything about the backgrounds of said characters? Any sane person would automatically say no. Obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinions when it comes to this kind of stuff but it's clear as day that when you look at this situation through more objective lenses, the arguments for the barako and barakoas resembling any racial connotations lacks any real critical thought and falls apart once you start to assess them for what they truly are, which is just weirdos online getting offended over nothing.
@IsaiahJones-rw1pc2 ай бұрын
Another thing I'm confused about is how is Umvuthi any better than Barako from a racism angle? The Barakoa were goblins with an African tribal motif, the Abavuthana are birds with an Aztec tribal motif. Nothing really changed. The only thing you can say about Barako is that his appearance seems to be inspired by goblins and Mayan depictions of ancient gods who most of which looked very human like with tribal masks and other tiki-like appearances, now while these would be fair comparisons I fail to see how any of these similarities are inherently racist or match up with most stereotypes of Africans. A lot of people say that Barako's design is stereotypical in nature but I honestly don't believe this to be true because almost every time I've looked up caricatures that even remotely resemble the Barakoa, almost all of them only share about 1 or 2 traits like wearing feathers or having bows or bones as weapons, ect. The Umvuthi is a completely different story though, even on surface level Umvuthi has many parallels to real life tribes such as the Aztecs with their tribal bird aesthetics and extreme worshipping of the sun. It doesn't just end at thematic similarities though since the Abavuthana all have striking resemblance to old native American and Aztec bird & mosquito masks and other parts of their cultures. The Umvuthi in particular having a very noticeable resemblance to old tribal bird masks as well as mosquito masks, which is very interesting considering a large part of the reason why Barako was deemed offensive was because of "cultural appropriation" yet the Umvuthi actually fits this term better. Hell, the Umvuthi even looks a lot like those old bird attires and costumes the native Americans used to wear due to superstitious purposes and seeing as how Umvuthi is characterized to be a monster that only exists to be killed by the player... I just can't help but thinking that it may come off as a demonization of African culture.

Feels like a lot of the charm of Barako was not carried over to the revision of Umvuthi. I feel like the bass vocals and chants of Barako added a lot to his presence that Umvuthi seemingly lacks entirely. If we're going away from humans it would've been interesting to explore bird vocalizations. Maybe some clicking, chattering of the beak, or long winded bird callings. Bird callings like the White Bellbird might be fitting, or the Screaming Piha. Those callings are quite unique, especially the White Bellbird which sounds pretty eerie. I think it could do some good. I feel like Umvuthi has a lot more interesting excuses for new moves that Barako didn't have before either. Barako being a fat guy just sorta makes sense, but a fat bird usually isn't typical. I think it would've been interesting if Umvuthi had a bowl of seeds he constantly ate from that his tribe members provided and one of his moves was spitting molten seeds towards the player. Umvuthi could also have larger wings, which could be used in his animation of pushing the player away. Maybe he flaps a gust of wind to knock away players. I feel like Umvuthi has a lot less going for them as a character, but has a lot more potentially interesting ideas that can be explored with them that Barako would've lacked due to him just being an overweight human. Overall not bad, but was hoping for a little more.
