Effective 1 January 2020, the basic rate is 12.5% and the higher rate is 28.5%. The basic rate applies to the first BBD 50,000 of taxable income; 28.5% applies to taxable income above BBD 50,000. Your personal allowance is 25,000 for residents ( does not apply to non residents) which is not taxed. Other allowance exist. Eg. Children, Which will determine each individuals tax returns. For taxation purposes a resident is defined as a person who spends in the aggregate more than 182 days in Barbados in that income year.

Great job. Keep it up. Lived in Barbados several years ago. Worked at UWI. Loved the experience, hated the bureaucracy. Rude clerks and office personnel. Best customer service from taxi drivers and fish market women. Beautiful people, Bajans👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾🇧🇧🇧🇧🇧🇧🇧🇧

16% and 33% taxes is insane. That's mind boggling. Im from Barbados and I still have most of my family there. I didn't know it was that expensive to live there. Makes me appreciate living in the US more now that I know.

Good day Jamie. I hope all is well. I'm so glad that I discovered your videos. Your transparency is really helpful. I literally just got approved for the 12 Month Welcome Stamp program on yesterday. I'm beyond excited. I'm a city girl, as such I'm used to a lot of convenience. You listed a lot of amenities in your apartment that I was concerned about. It's good to know I can have all of those included in an apartment. I've set my sights on the west coast as well. Can you share the differences in the various areas on the west coast when it comes to safety and the residential communities? I look forward to hearing from you. LaDawn
@jamierocke
@jamierocke 4 жыл бұрын
Sure! The West Coast is pretty safe. I've lived here at various times in my life, as a University student as well as now and I've not encountered safety issues. I'm not familiar with all the names of the areas on the West Coast, but I would say Holders Hill, Paynes Bay, Prior Park, Fitts Village, Sunset Crest are all great areas to live on the West Coast.

Hey Lakeycia, I think in general, you should be fine. There aren't a lot of hagglers, or petty crime or much difficulty at all living in Barbados. Especially if you're only here for three months. If you really want to meet people try farmers markets, pub quiz nights, organised hikes. whatsoninbarbados.com is a great resource if youre looking for things to do. Other than that, if you're adventurous and open enough it should be a good time for you. Godspeed!

I guess it’s difficult to determine cost of living in Barbados if you don’t disclose your income qualifications. Whe I research cost of living comparison between Bridgetown and Denver, Colorado, the biggest thing I notice is that the average salary is 75% higher in Denver and while housing is 150% more costly, food and services are a little less expensive in Denver. However, if the average salary in Barbados is only $2,575 BBD ($10,262 BBD in Denver), how do you afford $4,700 BBD/month!!! I’m supposing your salary must be higher than average? So, what the reader needs to understand better is, do live comfortably cuz you have a high paying job or are you living above your means? There’s an incongruency here. Additionally, you disclosed your Income and NIS taxes (FICA payroll taxes in the US) total roughly $2,180 BBD per month at a rate of 33% for income over $25,000 BBD/year? HOLY COW that’s very high taxation!!! For that price tag you should have free everything! Here’s the tax breakdown for $25,000 BBD/year in Colorado.... FICA PAYROLL TAX BREAKDOWN: Tax Type Monthly Annually Federal Income Tax $198 BBD $2,376 BBD Social Security Tax $130 BBD $1,560 BBD Medicare Tax $15 BBD $180 BBD Colorado State Tax $80 BBD $960 BBD Local Municipality Tax. $18 BBD $216 BBD TOTALS: $441 BBD $5,292 BBD So your income and NIS taxes are 80% higher than Denver, Colorado!!! I’d rather have higher housing cost than higher taxes cuz I can make a pretty penny by simply owning and selling a house here. By prying higher taxes you’re letting someone else spend your money for you. Just a thought.
@jamierocke
@jamierocke 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a long thought! Yeah I mean there are a lot of variables. But I was hoping that this would give persons an idea based on my experience. But I will tell you, that it doesn’t matter what kinda salary you make, everyone will tell you that the overall cost of living in Barbados is ridiculous and high. From taxes to food to rent and gas. It’s an expensive place, unfortunately, especially for locals.

This is an interesting question. You definitely cannot get around the entire island on a bicycle. But for getting around the neighborhood/parish (depending on the parish) or as a weekend hobby, a bike is okay. The roads do not have bicycle lanes. They barely have pedestrian lanes! So, unfortunately, you cant solely get around on just a bike.

@@jamierocke Yeah, in here people who make alot of money are sort of punished for that😄 (doesn't really motivate people to succeed). If you drive too fast and get stopped by the police you can literally pay such huge fines that you could buy two new cars with that money(seriously). That system funds all the people who do nothing(you get money from the government if you are unemployed, for food, rent etc), so it really isn't a motivating to start your own business or to make alot of money. People come here from other countries just because the system is so easy to abuse.

I check that website and the plans for you with the same feature is 95 bajan dolla for the same plan I was talking about that is about 7100 jmd where here with that money I can get a 15gb with 210gb with unlimited everything above and I will still left with that is about 6000jmd - 81 bj for that plan yall are getting robbed by them because they know you cannot live with there service but maybe it is because jamaica is bigger that's why and I have gotten to understand we also have some of the cheapest internet rates in the Caribbean we can get internet from like 45 bajan up to like 140 bj and that's about 80 bajan can get us 100 mb of internet but that is flow

Hi I hope you are well and thanks for all the information you provide, I would like for you to speak more about areas to live in Barbados and can one live in Barbados on local products example mangoes, fish etc as opposed to imported Foods and fruits, I am a Caricom citizen and I am in the process of researching 3 Caricom countries to live, I like the fact that Barbados is an international country and all that comes with that, but I am concerned that it may have lost the true Caribbean feel in terms of availability of local fruits like say Guyana, or Belize, I am concern that Barbados maybe way over price to offset the attractions of beautiful beaches, and ease of doing business, I have a pension of over $140.000 Barbados dollars but I believe one lives best where your income gives you the best bang, maybe I am asking too much, but I think you can handle it (lol)and last but not least talk more about Belize it is strong on my list, but I am concerned about safety, and ease of doing business, I am also high on Barbados because I am a huge Cricket fan 10 years ago I would have gone to Barbados easily but I think they are more options today, I retired early, I am hoping to start a business in the tourism, but in light of COVID I am concern about the cost of getting started as the sector is in trouble right now Thanks

Thanks for watching G! I think your concerns are valid... Barbados is nothing short of expensive. But I do think that there are still tons that is very Caribbean about Barbados. The development just adds an extra layer of convenience rather than removing identity. I plan on doing videos about Belize very soon. I would say that Belize has the same safety level as Barbados. The only reason why Barbados seems "safer" than most countries is because they don't really publicise crime. Since I've lived in Barbados there have been gruesome murders, home invasions and a ton of other crime that doesn't get highlighted on the news. You only realise until you are living here. In everything there is risk. The beauty about your situation is that you are on your own timing. I would say try Barbados for a year and see how you like it. Good luck!

@@jamierocke Hi Thanks for your quick response, very informative and glad to hear your view that Barbados still holds its Caribbean flavour, I have travelled much to Barbados, over the years but, I have not been there for some years now, I am sorry to hear about the crime that's very concern to me, while I understand crime is in every country, I can't ignore the fact that my safety is very important and since I am retired and don't really need to work makes it even more difficult for me to relocate to a Caribbean country where there is a high level of crime, I think I should give you a little information about me which would allow you to understand my frame of mind I am a retired Law enforcement officer and a University Graduate holding a Masters degree, I also spend much time travelling over the years mainly to Europe and would like to open a business where I can introduce Eastern and Central Europe to the Caribbean for different kinds of vacation experiences example both beach and Ecco tourism, over the last few years I have notice and have received many questions about the Caribbean from a growing number of Travellers from that part of the world who now have the disposable income and zest to travel outside of warmer parts of Europe since the Caribbean is one of the few places in the world where you can visit 365 days a year, I find that potentially rewarding, I wanted to find a solid base where I can locate my business, where the necessary infostructure is in place, I am not limited to Barbados and Belize I think can be an option, I chose to write to you because I was impressed with your mannerism and your intelligence along with your ambition I wish you well with you endeavours going forward I have the pension income which allows me to survive financially in whichever country I chose to settle, but I also think of St Lucia, Dominica, and Grenada, I was prepared to make the move this year but in light of COVID I don't know how this will play out until there are more certainties with COVID 19, but I am actively researching, I have had conversations with the Ministry of Trade the person in charge of Caricom so that process is ongoing, I thought it best that I look at English speaking Caribbean countries or Countries where they are high levels of English speakers, I know many people think your country is Spanish speaking, I been from Guyana know quite well the history of Belize, and have had over the years contact with a few people from Belize, if you have any further thoughts please feel free to share them Thanks and best regards GW

Very interesting video! Do you think things like racism, colorism and texturism are issues in Barbados or in the caribbean in general?
@jamierocke

Definitely. In Barbados it’s not overt or blatant but it does exist because I’ve personally encountered it. But I wouldn’t say that it’s prohibitive in any way.
