A Word on Westerns

Күн бұрын

BarBara Luna recalls her husband Doug McClure and their first meeting on the western series, OVERLAND TRAIL. The show starred William Bendix and Doug, before he was cast as “Trampas” on the long running hit, THE VIRGINIAN. Marriage for Doug and Luna followed but not before Luna headed to Hawaii to shoot a movie. The talented actress was cast opposite Frank Sinatra in THE DEVIL AT 4 O’CLOCK and thought Doug, who joined her on location, might get jealous. What happened there is an unforgettable memory for Luna, which she shares.
Because she could ride a horse, hit her marks, and say her lines, the stunning beauty worked steadily during the heyday of TV westerns. Luna appeared as the hot-blooded “Theresa” in the ZORRO TV series with Guy Williams because she could both sing and ride! She guest starred on most of the TV cowboy classics from GUNSMOKE, DEATH VALLEY DAYS, THE HIGH CHAPARRAL, BONANZA, CIMARRON STRIP, LAREDO, THE WILD, WILD WEST and others. She recalls being typecast in her early roles and of being chased around a hay filled barn by Richard Boone on HAVE GUN, WILL TRAVEL, in a scene that was definitely NOT in the script.
Luna is also part of the original STAR TREK legacy and described how the sci-fi series was so different for her because it was one of the few times that she wasn’t typecast.
“It’s all about love and understanding,” she says about STAR TREK and her classic episode, “Mirror, Mirror.”
Short excerpts from this conversation between Luna and Rob Word were posted before, but with the addition of unused footage, it has been re-edited and lengthened to include everything from the July 20, 2016 taping of A WORD ON WESTERNS at the Autry Museum.

I've commented on him before, but I think Doug McClure was a very nice man. He really encouraged me at one point about something very silly and common, and he barely knew me. It's been ages since that moment, but I've never forgotten it. I love hearing Barbara speaking about him so fondly.

@@AWordonWesterns Odd that you should mention Bobby Hoy. He was and remains a great favorite of mine, especially in The High Chaparral, which I turn on every a.m. as I do my transcribing work at home (because of pandemic). I always thought he was a fine actor (needless to say) and very attractive (OK, I admit it--I always thought he looked perfectly fine in his snug-fitting ranch pants--) The bunkhouse boys on Chaparral were such a group of fine, fine character actors (all these Western character actors are first-rate), and, sadly, so many of the cast members have passed relatively recently--beautiful, beautiful Linda Cristal, Henry Darrow, Don Collier (beautiful blue eyes!) but they will live forever on film.

BarBara Luna was also in "Ship of Fools" with Lee Marvin who was nearly beaten to death in the film by an enraged Vivien Leigh, with a high heel shoe of all things. Which Marvin kept as a memento from that film for the rest of his life. Zorro was almost as big a craze among Boomer kids as Davy Crockett. So there was hardly a mailbox, garage door or grade school blackboard that didn't have a Guy Williams "Z" marked on it by some boomer kid imagining himself as his caped hero. BarBara was a great sexy beauty and a terrific actress who made the guest star rounds on mosta the great western shows in those days, so it's not surprising Paladin when she appeared on his show put the moves on her. No one had an unkind word to say about Doug McClure who really must have been a truly great guy, as well as an iconic character in The Virginian as Trampas. Highly entertaining full-length show with BarBara. Great memories from a very classy lady.

Somewhere in a dusty album is a picture of me in my Davy Crockett outfit. And sure enough, a couple of years later I had a black hat, mask, cape and sword and would go riding through the night on my trusty hobby horse. Scratching "Zs" in public places. Also guilty.

By coincidence, last week we just finished watching the entire Disney Zorro series, including the 1960 and 1961 specials. I've never enjoyed a television show more than I did this wonderful series. I can't say enough about how impressive the casting, writing, acting, and stunts were. I doubt it will ever be topped. As for never having seen a western you didn't like, I have to ask if you ever watched Shotgun Slade. I made it through one episode and stopped.

@@AWordonWesterns That was one of my major gripes about it (and I love Peter Gunn and Henry Mancini). Also, he was using a type of shotgun that was not yet invented. I know, I know. Most of the handguns and rifles featured in those old TV westerns were slightly anachronistic, but at least they closely mimicked the guns of the period.

Spent an evening at the Hog's Breath Inn in Carmel. Doug McLure was standing at the bar and turned around to me and my two buddies and said, "nice night isn't it?" Wow, we were touring the country and he was the first movie star we encountered on our way to LA. My buddies and I got our drinks and went and sat down around an outdoor fireplace and Doug and his fiancee' (soon to be wife) Diane Furnberg followed us out and sat with us for the entire evening. He wondered why us guys, from Massachusetts, all had "Kennedy eyes." I was trying to get in the movie business and he gave me a handful of people to contact. Really nice people, both of them.

Luna's most productive and best work was surely all the TV she did in the 1960's and certainly her best movie role was 1961's THE DEVIL AT 4 O'CLOCK... and the man that photographed that movie was probably the most under-rated and overly prolific director of photography JOSEPH BIROC... Now Rob and all you western fans will maybe best remember him for BLAZING SADDLES (1974), but western-wise he also did CAHILL U.S. MARSHAL (1973), ULZANA'S RAID (1972), THE GRISSOM GANG (1971), GOLD OF THE 7 SAINTS (1961), FORTY GUNS (1957)... And then there's his other movies AIRPLANE (1980), THE LONGEST YARD (1974), photographing the action scenes on THE TOWERING INFERNO which got him an Oscar (1974), EMPEROR OF THE NORTH (1973), THE RUSSIANS ARE COMING (1966) and THE FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX (1965) to name just a few of his iconic movies. Joe Biroc did so much TV work including 1971's Emmy winner BRIAN'S SONG... and getting back to THE DEVIL AT 4 O'CLOCK and his photographing Barbra, well Frank Sinatra must've loved him to as he did all of Frank's crime movies TONY ROME (1967), THE DETECTIVE and LADY IN CEMENT (1968)... Joe even get's to film VIVA LAS VEGAS (1964) what a guy! It's a shame the DP's never got much of a chance to tell their stories, because when it comes to westerns and getting those iconic landscape shots whether in color or B&W, those guys never got the credit they deserve either from fans or their peers!

Thanks, Graham. I always try and point out the DPs, too. Did you see the documentary on early cameramen on TCM last week? IT WAS AWESOME!! Great clips, too.

@@AWordonWesterns Rob I gave up my TCM subscription when Robert Osborne died... but I've done a number of projects with the ASC... I had the pleasure of knowing a number of iconic DP's, especially those associated with westerns like Conny Hall, Lucien Ballard and Bill Clothier, even good old Bud Thackery who is often overlooked and never got the credit he deserved. I was also very close with Phil Lathrop, he was DP Russ Metty's great operator on TOUCH OF EVIL getting that fantastic opening and long continuous tracking shot... Phil was DP on LONELY ARE THE BRAVE Kirk Douglas' favorite role and movie, Phil shot the first nine episodes of the first season of RAWHIDE. Sure... as shootin' we'll never see their like again!

She was in Star Trek...and was a guest star on Roy Thinnes's "The Invaders", where she played an alien invader masquerading as a housekeeper for a priest played by Joseph Campanella. Always good in whatever role she had.

"Terror in the Sky", was by - far my favorite Doug McClure movie, with his best TV appearance being on an obscure episode of Merv Griffin, where Pat Paulsen presented what appearred to be a stand-up comedy sketch telling derogatory ethnic/racist jokes, when in reality, Paulsen was telling the world "enough already, this is what your stupidity sounds like, so knock it the heck off". Griffin introduced Paulsen, then both Griffin and Paulsen appearred to be 'squirming', and wanting to get off of the set and hide. McClure portrayed himself as being "about half lit", with facial expressions I remember to this day, almost fifty years later.
