Hanna-Barbera Cartoons, Inc. was an American animation studio and production company that produced animated programming until 2001. It was founded on July 7, 1957, by Tom and Jerry creators and former MGM cartoon studio staff William Hanna and Joseph Barbera...that's what this movie is about right?!

I saw it tonight. WOW!!!! It was a cool experience. I love that there was no CGI. Character development was fantastic and it took a few twists that weren't easy to figure out right away. I like that it took it's time building tension, but I do think the overall run length was it's achilles heel if it had one. 3/5 stars!!!!

THIS was a horror movie that surprised me with how much I enjoyed it. I feel like you should do a "spoiler" version too because there are some crazy elements that warrant discussion with those who've seen it. You could explore the female-centered themes from "me too" to motherhood. One thing - when you say "a lot of nudity" one might immediately think of the lead characters Tess & Keith, but the nudity you speak of is...uh, not exactly the salacious kind! Chris, lemme know if you want to have a guest to discuss - I'm a lactation counselor, I could DEFINITELY lend an intriguing interpretation to the themes in this film! 😄

I thought this movie was going to be so much better than it was. My favorite part of it was the beginning with Skarsgaard and the main girl, maybe the first 30 mins in the house. Started off so mysterious and eerie, then as soon as you find out what’s going on in the basement it gets ridiculous and all over the place. Very overhyped movie IMO.

To answer your question at the end, a (somewhat) recent horror movie that I absolutely adore is, The Nun. It got trashed but not sure why... it's a spin off of the Conjuring, which itself isn't anything overly special. The Nun for me was just gorgeous to look at and the atmosphere was amazing. It reminded me of Italian horror from the early 80s. There's a scene that's more or less lifted from Fulci's City of the Living Dead. The Nun was just damn fun, super campy, had an almost Indiana Jones type vibe at times. Great OST also. Just a really fun popcorn horror movie.

SPOILERS!!! Can someone explain to me why Keith was killed off and replaced with AJ half an hour into the movie? At that point we already spent 30 minutes developing their relationship and I felt it would've had much greater emotional impact if when she escaped, she wanted to save Keith instead of someone she just met a few minutes earlier. Plus it made the movie grind to a halt for 20 minutes to develop AJ's character. Personally, I felt it would've been much better story-wise to keep Keith alive and not include AJ. Is there something I'm missing because I'm definitely in the minority with this?
@quiteknight502 жыл бұрын
If not for AJ, Tess would stay in there for eternity. The writers needed Tess trapped so the mother could build a relationship with Tess
@joop9122 жыл бұрын
My best guess maybe the director was going for more of a misdirection to keep the audience on there toes. I was beginning to think AJ was not going to died.

I love that movie- I was so impressed by the retro feel of the whole thing, and it brought me back to my childhood in the late ‘70s/ early’80s, and the great horror we had back then. The cast was phenomenal, as well. It’s definitely near the top of my list for horror, but horror is my favorite genre- if something breaks into the top 20, it’s an impressive feat.

Even have just seen the trailer, the set up/premise is a bit hard to swallow. She could have just called the owners. Or she could have chosen to get a bit wet & go elsewhere, than stay in a house with a total unknown stranger. Or call an uber/taxi. Or ask him to leave - clearly if he was a gentleman he would have offered ;). Thank you for the great movie review! I found out about this film late in the game. I am a huge horror film connoisseur, and am now rushing to see it before it leaves our local theatres on Thursday! Hereditary is probably my Most favourite horror movie of the decade…I’m wondering if Barbarian will affect / impress me in the same way Hereditary does. -I rarely watch a film twice, but have watched Hereditary twice in the theatre, and, several more times after, on the telly, with various friends and family members I thought might enjoy it. Who here has seen BOTH movies? What are your thoughts?
@birchmahogany27182 жыл бұрын
It's not much like Hereditary. I won't say anything more but Barbarian is awesome, it is such a wild movie and the theater experience was great. I saw it last Saturday with my wife and there were maybe 20 people in a 150 seat theater. People reacted though and everyone was glued to the screen. It's damn near a masterpiece considering how polished it is and coming from a first time director who also wrote the script. Nothing mind blowing but just damn good across the board. Curious what you thought of it if you ended up seeing it.
@MoviesAndMunchies2 жыл бұрын
Hereditary is one of my all the favorite horrors... This isn't on that level at all, but it is still fun.
@AtlanticManic2 жыл бұрын
@@MoviesAndMunchies - Thank you. I feel the same! I just saw Barbarian tonight, and I thought it was just “OK”. Certainly not Hereditary calibre. Not even close. I could have waited to see Barbarian on TV. It was entertaining enough to be watched at home, but I should have just waited for it. I regret spending the money paying to have “the theatre experience” for this movie. Hereditary is in my top 3 horror movies of all time, and probably the best offering in the genre in decades. I love hearing from others who feel the same. Not everyone was as affected by Hereditary as I was. I’m tempted to ask you for recommendations! We clearly have similar taste. I’ve been a horror fan since childhood, and have seen almost everything…well, until later adulthood. -my tastes have gradually become more refined, and, my expectations/standards have filtered out a lot of the junk ones. I won’t watch the garbage flicks that lack substance and revisit all the old tropes. ie: if it involves college students in a cabin, I won’t bother. I want the characters to be relatable and realistic (I need to be emotionally invested in the characters and their stories), and, be treated to a great score, interesting /quality cinematography, good twists/unique narrative, with lots of psychological tension. Something more cerebral. I have recently watched a couple of other “OK” ones. Speak No Evil (I found it on Shudder), and, Innocents. Barbarian is not really even as good as they are, in my opinion. Also, re: Barbarian…I wish the ending would have been better. It had some potential... good build up…but, in my opinion, it all got squandered. I honestly didn’t even find it disturbing or scary at all. Am I desensitized, or just drawn to different elements (the elements that Barbarian lacked)??
@AtlanticManic2 жыл бұрын
@@birchmahogany2718 - I saw it tonight with my favourite auntie and my 18 year old son. We were the only ones in the theatre. I may have enjoyed it more if we’d had more people there-I do enjoy others’ reactions/the group experience. As I just said in my other reply, I found it a bit underwhelming, overall, but, I think the things that scare me are more niche/unique to me. These things are subjective. I really did love / enjoy the Tess and Keith characters, I enjoyed the house (set design) and, some other elements. It wasn’t terrible, but I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as I was hoping I would. I felt the ending was disappointing. You are right about the polish. There were elements that were well done, for sure. Definitely impressive for a first time director.
@MoviesAndMunchies2 жыл бұрын
@@AtlanticManic I totally get that feeling on Barbarian, especially the end - it went a bit off the rails. I won't ever watch Speak No Evil again, even though I kind of enjoyed it on first watch. I loved The Innocents even though it's messed up with the kid angle. I love the more cerebral horrors now also, but I do find myself drawn to some of the cheesy or schlocky if they can execute it well... more misses than hits though. Have you seen The Invitation from 2015? I recently rewatched it and it is an uncomfortable/awkward character horror that's worth a watch.
