Barbarians at the Gate (1993) At Those Movies

Amazingly enough, this is a TV movie, shown on HBO instead of a movie theater. Great enough to win an Emmy, Great enough to be reviewed by Siskel & Ebert. You might find this a timely movie as the plot involved taking a public company private. Elon Musk much?

I think Roger was getting at the idea of using the company’s assets as capital to purchase the company for himself, which is a cynical (and largely false) way of looking at it. All that debt incurred is now owed by the new owner after all. It’s not like he just steals the money from the company to buy the company (which I think is the barb Roger was taking at Johnson and all LBO’s in general). There are certainly nuanced perspectives on either side of the issue and the overwhelming greed of 80’s Wall Street certainly played a key role in the recession of the early 90’s, but Roger’s point was a vast oversimplification of how LBO’s are viewed. At any rate, I watched this film as a 14 year old boy and absolutely loved it! Obviously most of the details went way over my head, but the way it’s written and acted kept me engaged and entertained regardless. Haven’t seen it since then til now so I’m pleased to see that it really is just as good as I remembered as a kid, only being 30 years older now helped me fully understand all the great moments that went over my head back in 1993! Highly recommend this film and if you DO like this kind of stuff let me heartily recommend two other 90’s HBO films along the same lines as this; The Late Shift (about the Jay Leno/David Letterman battle over Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show) as well as Pirates of Silicon Valley (about the feud between Steve Jobs and Bill Gates) during the 80’s when Gates was first developing Windows. Both are awesome!
