The Sack of Rome occurred on August 24, 410. The city was attacked by the Visigoths led by King Alaric. At that time, Rome was no longer the capital of the Western Roman Empire, having been replaced in that position first by Mediolanum in 286 and then by Ravenna in 402. Nevertheless, the city of Rome retained a paramount position as "the eternal city" and a spiritual center of the Empire. The sack was a major shock to contemporaries, friends and foes of the Empire alike.

Alaric may have been a Goth but he was a Roman General as well. By all accounts the sacking of Rome in 410AD was a very mild affair. The Western Empire only got into real trouble when the Vandals took North Africa and totally sacked Rome 50 years later. They could have done with Alaric and his Goths then to protect them.
@berig_gutisk8 жыл бұрын

Nah, Rome’s true heirs were in the east. The Greek speaking empire of Byzantium.
@ash82075 жыл бұрын
What a bunch of non-sense, they didn't pretend to be Rome's heirs. You're obviously not a history scholar, otherwise you wouldn't have posted this absurd lie. Actually the truth is the Goths were proud of their Getic roots. The Goth historian Jordanes, through Cassiodorus, clearly mentions this in his famous work Getica, a.k.a. De origine actibusque Getarum ("The Origin and Deeds of the Getae/Goths).
@ash82074 жыл бұрын
Connor Mcdairmant That would have been fine if he specifically said the Carolingians or if Charlemagne was mentioned. But the Carolingians were just one branch of the Goths. So it’s disingenuous & misleading to make a generic statement that the Goths are Rome’s heirs. Especially if you research Spanish history. The Getic/Dacian heritage is clearly mentioned in their historical origins. Not to mention that the first Spanish kings are confirmed as proud descendants of the Getae in Spanish legends. Also I would argue that the later Holy Roman Empire wasn’t exactly holy or Roman as most people think. I agree with the previous comment that the Byzantine Empire was the true heir to Rome.
@marloyorkrodriguez99754 жыл бұрын
Ash uhh I would have to disagree since if you look at the history of Spain and Italy, the goths that migrated there began to quickly became romanized, Theodoric King of Italy paid homage to the Byzantines, Goths in Spain became romanized creating the base of the pillar of what would be the Spanish language, you might disagree all you want but it’s true speaking as someone with a Spanish heritage. While yes I can agree that Byzantium is the true heir of Rome, I was just stating the fact that after the western empire fell, the goths were one of the people’s that claim to be successors of the western empire.
@ash82074 жыл бұрын
Connor Mcdairmant Theodoric & the Ostrogoths preserved the Roman institutions for their own political & social needs. There was no need to discard them, they were beneficial & efficient. But yet they were openly proud of their Getic roots. Cassiodorus, through the work of Iordanes clearly affirms this. So when I hear about the Goths being the heirs of the Roman Empire, it’s completely taken out of context. But believe whatever you want, I’ll just respectfully disagree. To each their own.

Alaric is one of the greatest revolutionaries in all of European history. He completely put an end to Roman imperial domination and showed that empires can be defeated and destroyed. The Western Roman Empire effectively ceased to exist after 410, really nothing but an appendage of the Visigothic kingdom and completely subordinated to Goths, Franks and Alamanni. Like Hegel said, "the dignity of the Western Emperors became a farce". All empires have to end and not be allowed to exist.

Why do all movies depicting late Rome use legionary armor from like 1st-2nd century? By 410 Roman soldier was visually indistinguishable from the barbarian soldier, and often a barbarian himself. So true. There's an anecdote of a Roman general in the Gallia who was chasing a group of Alemanni, and their army stopped at a city asking for supplies. One very important information that most people forget (or don't know) is that when the goths invaded Rome, the city was not as important as it used to be. Probably the goths wouldn't have succeeded if Rome (the city) was still the center of Rome (the empire). The capital city and the de facto center of power was moved to Constantinople one century before, far, far away from Rome (the city). It took another thousand years to really displace Rome (the empire) on where it center of power was.

shouldn't alaric have a massive mustache and long hair? His hair looks more or less Roman.

Where's the christogram on Roman shields?
@paprskomet7 жыл бұрын
That symbol was a special one.It was not like that all Roman units of the Period wore it all of the time.In reality 99,9 percent of all Roman regiments of that time had no christogram on their shields at all(and we have a very good idea of shield designs of that era for various regiments).The only standing unit who seems to normally have XP on their shields was a very small corp of bodyguards in close service to the Emperor.Roman army as depicted in this ultra-rubbish series are however wearing only incredibly ugly and bad imitations of the real Roman equipment and in this Episode they are using incredibly ugly and bad imitations of 1st-2nd century Roman equipment in 5th century timeframe !

this may be a dumb question- if so, my apology: but - is he wearing a "suebian knot" ?? or was that more common amongst other tribes/people as well? i'm hoping it was more than "random costuming choice"
@davemorgan60134 жыл бұрын
I don't think we know what Alaric looked like. However, given his more or less Roman upbringing, I would guess that he didn't look much different from the Romans and probably had a short Roman haircut.
@badgerbrowncoat54334 жыл бұрын
@@davemorgan6013 oh i wasn't debating what he should or shouldn't look like; I was curious if that was a suebian knot- you have to wonder if the costumers knew what that was, and it was intentional, or not.

also keep in mind the Roman Military - isn't very "Roman" at this point.

When does History Channel plan on making videos about the Byzantine Empire? You guys are constantly rehashing the same stuff over and over again. You have a whole 1000 years worth of Roman history (post 476) to make content with.
