I gotta say I found you about a month ago and this channel is the most informative channel I've ever come across. And I have a lot of expensive and complicated hobbies. Also you've saved me maybe a thousand bucks cause I would need to paint 1000 spoons to get this knowledge. I've just started really getting into this ps771 airbrush after coming from motorcycle painting. I've bought like 20 of your paints in the last 3 weeks and about 500 bucks worth of all clad, ultralimen, Gaia and Tamiya and Mr color to start painting all my old Gundam and some new ones . I've been watching almost every video all the way back to 3 years ago . I hope to meet you one day and shake your hand if possible sir. Thank you 100x keep up the amazing work.

@AStarkr3802Ай бұрын
What is 2k paint you mention often? Thanks for the informative videos!
@treborrrrrАй бұрын
It's a two part paint, most commonly used in the auto industry. Think of it as epoxy where you mix the two parts together before applying. You have the paint and then you have a catalyst/hardener, you can also add a reducer/thinner to fine tune the viscosity of the paint. Once the paint is mixed, the timer starts, and you have X amount of time (depends on the paint you use) to apply it before it thickens up too much to be usable. The draw with these paints is that they are super durable (just think of the abuse a car has to take) and the gloss you can get out of them is pretty fantastic. They're also really easy to apply and super forgiving in my experience. They also self level great. The downside is that it's really toxic. Rex downplays this quite a bit which is annoying to me. He's not even using a respirator when painting, and usually not even gloves, which is crazy to me. Have you ever seen how car painters have these big "helmets" on and they are fully covered from head to toe? That's not just to protect their clothes... Most 2k paints have isocyanates in them which you need specific PPE to protect yourself from. Going by smell is not enough, even if you can't smell it through your mask doesn't mean you're not inhaling the stuff (the level of hazardous exposure is lower than the level needed to be able to smell it). People will argue that the amounts we use in model painting is so small that it's not a big deal. And I guess there's some truth to that. But the thing is that an airbrush will atomise the paint even finer than the big guns used when painting a car, making it more hazardous. And most people use tiny little spray booths that aren't nearly powerful enough to contain and get rid of the overspray which then lingers in your room after you're done spraying (especially since most people don't replace the filters nearly often enough). I'd advice you to do some research on your own, don't just take my word for it, and then make a decision on whether or not you want to use it. It can be done safely, just take the proper precautions.

Amazing video. This is huge news for people like me wanting chrome for a practical application like fishing lures. I only shoot rattlecan 2k clears, so I will find DupliColor 1k. My question is, after ample drying time, would I be able to shoot 2k over the 1k without it dulling?
@Jjschmitt120Ай бұрын
From my experience, there shouldn’t be any issue using a 2k on top of a 1k clear. For extra insurance, do a nice tack coat before your wet coat

You said in previous video (maybe this one too) to bake it at 120°F. My toaster oven and home oven start at 150°F. Is a dehydrator the only way to achieve the lower temp? I'd hate to put a PLA Mando helmet in the home oven and watch it melt, since thats really close to the softening temp of PLA, & i doubt a helmet or chest plate would fit in a dehydrator.

So I'm a bit confused here- why do I need this 2k stuff? What's stopping me from using, say, some Alclad gloss base, putting the chrome on top of that, and then sealing it in with some Alclad Aqua gloss? All I've heard from other people is "because durability", but I've never had a durability issue with Alclad's black base or aqua gloss.

Hello, I printed a resin 3D model, I primed the piece with a black glossy primer and then sprayed it with TAMIYA Spray Lacquer TS-14 Black to get a really nice black glossy finish. I used a small HPLV gun and sprayed LiME LiNE Automotive high gloss 2k Clearcoat on it and it came out perfectly until I noticed 10 hours later 2 drips that collected on the bottom side. I have to remove these so I sanded the spots to get back to the smooth surface but its now cloudy of course due to the sanding. How do I proceed from here? Do I prime, paint, clearcoat again? I'm asking because I noticed in one of you videos there was bubbling etc... and I did notice something like this on some test peieces that I didn't sand. Anyway, I don't want to have to start this project over and would like to fix this if possible. BTW... my next step was to spray the Ultralumen on it. Thanks

@TheIcemanModdeler Yes, it's interesting what is possible for hobbyists from America, I'm a little jealous. If I spend more money on taxes and possibly customs, I might could get some things from China and Japan, but that's way beyond my budget... So, I'm also sticking with GSW (both "Chrome" for airbrush and normal brush, although the GSW for brushes is practically identical to the much more expensive Molotow, which comes from Germany, by the way, I was quite surprised about that).
@TheIcemanModdelerАй бұрын
@@PolLight3000 Tried Molotow once, it went heavy and looked nice but it kept rubbing off and not sure if u can seal it with anything. I basically do a super thing coat of Aquagloss over Chrome. Same with their 2k clears, ACME is only in US so i got AK 1K clear instead and it's been working great, not sure how it goes over chrome though but it works great over Vallejo Liquid Gold.
@PolLight3000Ай бұрын
@@TheIcemanModdeler Well, I'm somewhat limited in the variety of different materials and brands because I literally have to order everything online and I don't have an online supplier who can deliver everything, which makes ordering different brands quite difficult and expensive. So I restrict myself to a few brands. That's why I don't have AK and Vallejo at all or only very little, and I have to order GSW directly from Spain. Anyway, I was able to compare Molotow and GSW "2454 Chrome Metal" myself: Both look identical, both are processed in the same way, both take ages to dry (and yet they must never be touched again). And - too bad - neither of them tolerates sealing with clear varnish at all, no matter what type of clear varnish! Cheers and take care - greetings from Germany!🍀🖖🏻
