Since I have a soapbox, here are my thoughts on Barber Beats (NOT THAT YOU ARE OBLIGATED TO CARE!):
The following things are all true:
1. The degree of "sampling" in BB is utterly egregious. People used to complain that vaporwave was "just slowing down someone else's music," but this is LITERALLY true of many BB tracks.
2. BB exposes people to music they would otherwise not have found.
3. Many people prefer the BB version of a track to the original. (Hell, I used to slow my favorite music down in Audacity long before BB was a thing.)
4. Like vaporwave, BB has an aesthetic component that alters the listener's perception of the music.
5. BB artists often admit upfront that their content is "plundered" or "stolen," rather than claiming it as their own. However, they rarely list the artists and tracks that they sample.
My takeaway: BB is great and I'm truly happy that it exists. I acknowledge that the effort involved is nowhere near what's required to record and produce truly new music, but that doesn't really bother me; the end result is something that I enjoy and wouldn't get to experience otherwise. Still, I wish BB artists would give more credit to the artists they sample. You're not fooling anyone bro, and we don't care anyway -- so just own it! :) Lastly, I don't mind paying a few bucks for a BB album, but I wish some of that money could flow back to the original artists. My dream is for Bandcamp to add a "Kudos" feature, where the artist can list other Bandcamp users they want to give credit to, and the buyer can decide what % of their money goes to each one (with sensible defaults). In the meantime, I encourage you to do this manually if you can afford it. Peace!

I want to respond to your argument on credit and sample clearance. Of course, it would be nice for those guys to mention their sample sources and give credit, unfortunately, this is a bit more complicated than this. The thing is that if they would list all of their sample sources they would voluntarily submit to copyright policies. Which in its turn would result in something very different from what you are depicting, Instead of sharing "some of that money" in the name of commonsensical just. the music industry would milk them entirely, particularly by even restricting some of their tracks and blocking permissions. In some cases, sample clearance gets itself to an enormous amount of money. Regardless of how we evaluate this genre in terms of its musical qualities, if the artists would follow your advice this genre as well as vaporwave won't even exist to an extent where you can come around it on the internet. What you've done on the other hand is very nice and this is the exact compromise that can be reached by enthusiastic people to link the music and provide listenings for both source and remix. This is how the underground used to be. Love.

I agree completely, thanks for adding that nuance! You're right, the sort of solution I'd like to see implemented is only feasible in a world without the insane IP laws of today -- or, perhaps, on decentralized platforms that IP laws can't reach.

Most of these tracks take from already underground and obscure downtempo producers from the early 2000s and often it’s very lazy work just slowing things down slightly. The music is still enjoyable though, so obviously the correct solution is to pirate the newer copy instead of falling for a bandcamp page with fancy artwork.

tbh im still on the fence with it. It's not really "making music" if you grab a sample, slow it out and throw some ambient sfx over it. I've begun to take it more in a "djing" way, a little disappointing to find out they're not recording their own trumpet jazz freestyles over home-made downtempo beats but, introduces me to cool music I wouldn't have found elsewhere so pretty damn successful as a DJ if anything.

Hearing all this stuff lately is cool, I mainly played keys in a reggae band aside from home studio beat making...but always have listened to dub, triphop, downtempo, electronica since the late 90s. Inspiring to make beats again and knowing there's an audience listening this stuff is awesome, I'm lockstep in what you said! Solace indeed.

I used to slow down my favourite music for listening, all the way back when casettes were still a common method, and still do it frequently today - with some reverb and delay added, courtesy of the accessibility of digital playback. I didn't thought it was a thing for more people, but I was certainly happy when BB and "Liminal mix" compilations became a thing; which occured almost simultaneously, it seems. So glad to find people in the same frequency.

Considering how kinda underground barber beats are as a genre, it's friggin difficult to find more information on the artists and their "work" online. But maybe there is more to the music than just pitching down / light fx.. Anyways, enjoy the music and don't get too angry on the internet y'all... I mean sure, there's an argument to be made there, but I just had to laugh at someone criticizing sampling when the sample itself was a cover. I'm of a typical dub and triphop background into beat making myself, don't sample material not for any reason I just like composing beats. But, I read some other info and comments from many vidz on youtube about "ooh great sample".... the sonic quality of everything and of course some horn lines, those are super near impossible with MIDI on these levels. I didn't realize how much re-sampling was done! I can dig it - but very correct, give some credit. Very informative - my friends who made vwave and ewave crafted their own sound and made it lofi and gritty with plugins. I really like how smooth and rich these tunes sound!!

I've heard some good future funk remixes, and I respect the moving parts, and making new songs over old ones, but honestly, after listening to this first track and comparing it to the OG, it is HARD to keep listening to this mix already. All I can say to people who do this type of music is you get out what you put in. There's nothing wrong with having fun with old tracks, and showing love by analyzing and experimenting with other's music, but don't expect a bunch of accolades or even ad money, in this day and age of the internet of our lord. I'm so poorly versed with any artists these people would sample, so this list is great to see. Thanks for that. At least the album covers still usually look cool. I'd assume the artists typically at least do most of that themselves since designer credits seem very rare.

Bro wanted to make an statement regarding barber beats and at the same time managed to make a dope playlist. This one condensates the greatest hits of the barber beats scene. I find myself coming back here way too many times ahaha
@lchampine
@lchampine Жыл бұрын
it's actually the reverse, I only wrote that bit in the description after I saw people arguing in the comments haha. Originally I just wanted to make a good playlist! And I included all the samples because I personally love hearing the "source material" and sometimes it can be hard to track down.
@praxisclow
@praxisclow 11 ай бұрын
@@lchampine then you achieved exactly that! Seriously, all of these in here are bangers. I'll always be coming back here. I also like to go back to source material and check the differences between both.

So thankful for Playlists as informative as this one. I think we all know BB and vaporwave are just plunderphonics and therefore always contain samples or are just straight up slowed down versions of already existing songs. So as far as this piracy goes, finding the original song of a sample can be quite the treasure hunt xD Love it tho when people actually credit the originals as its p rare

You're doing god's work. I've always been a huge fan of Macroblank, but it would frustrated me so much reading the comments where people would say things like "wow he's making a full album every month when most other artists take years to make one!!''. I have no problem with mixes, remixes and edits (love them infact) but the lack of credits given on these uploads always felt wrong...

I never realised how wild the sampling was until I checked the differences in Monodrones song "考えを失った" (the third song on this mix) and it is literally the same song just slow to about 0.7x speed. although I do prefer its crazy how it's like that

That's how its done! I always wondered how "marcroblank" was making all of their songs, or how the channel posting the music could be posing as someone else and saying how everything was plundered. Now I realize theyre just recycling good music. That's why their sound changes from album to album. Pretty lame when I see them accept money and donations for it too
