The chord at 3:31 is super juicy in that context. It’s so rugged and rough and ringy. It’s everything i want in barbershop.

TJ Barranger whats the they Theory behind that? Solfge or numbers.
@TJBarranger
@TJBarranger 6 жыл бұрын
@@jeremiahacosta422 It's a Dominant 7th chord with the root in the top voice, 7th immediately below it, 3rd in the middle, and 5th on the bottom. As for its etymology, most barbershoppers will tell you the "Chinese" designation is because the top root and 7th are stacked one whole tone apart, just as they are at the beginning of the tune, "Chopsticks".

I love barbershop as much as everyone else. But I have a question... Is there a point where the harmonies drown out the original melody? It becomes not a rendition of the song, but an exercise in tones and harmonies. And this is my problem with this performance. Technically great. but without the underpinning of the melody, they might as well just be doing harmonizing rifts, using pointless words. IMHO. I repeat, This performance is very well done, and executed. However, I would have preferred a smaller group, say 8, doing the song in barbershop harmony, where they gave more attention to the melody of the song rather than just the harmony. But I'm no expert, just of big fan of the original song who really wanted to hear it in barbershop style.

I appreciate your comment...it exposes a very tricky and technical challenge for frankly, groups of EVERY size. This situation, where the melody can be too subtle, or overtaken by other parts can be observed in a quartet, octet or big beautiful chorus like the VM! It's all about dynamics and balance. It is absolutely true that the melody should be x% more prominent than all other parts. This applies whether the melody is owned by the Lead, then switches to Bass and then Tenor, the other three parts need to adjust accordingly so that the melodic flow is never missing or overpowered. The dynamics (volume range) and balance performing live, especially with a big group is not at all easy. You hear the overall dynamic range in this song, which is phenomenal... but in the middle of all the dynamic range, the melody cannot, or should never be found lacking. To be fair, it may have been better "live" (guaranteed, I've heard VM live several times and it is mind-blowing), but for the argument your point is quite valid regardless! So, yes, to achieve a continual melodic flow, regardless of what part is carrying the melody, should always be slightly prominent. Of course this accepts the arrangers possible deviations from the original melody. Now...if you hear a produced version of this song, where volumes are manipulated on a board, I'm sure these issues become rather moot. The trick is "live"....no easy feat, ever.

God, what happened to this classic song? Barely recognize it. Sounds awful as a barbershop harmony piece. The song lost all its energy and zest.
