Margo Robbie came up with the idea and first approached Mattel in 2018, and once she got the go ahead she approached Greta Gerwig to write the script ( along with her husband ), and once the script was approved she asked Greta to direct. Apparently it's a very tight knit crew.

The girl asks where do the Kens stay. Funny enough, Mattel did release a blue house for Ken, however as mentioned above, there are hints of a Ken Land so the houses are apart from Barbie Land. But since all the fun stuff happens in Barbie Land and the Kens' reason of being is to be Barbie's boyfriend, I guess they sleep in the Barbie cars as to not be too far away from their girlfriends.
