Toya, Derwent Inktense are NOT watercolor pencils, they are water-soluble ink pencils. On many surfaces they will be permanent; paper, clothing, etc. Many of them are also Lightfast. Derwent sells watercolor pencils as well. They also have Inktense block, if you find you want more of a direct painting effect rather than pencil. These are artist grade; meaning better quality, longer lasting, and better ingredients. Derwent is one of my favorite companies and so far many of their products do not contain serious allergens for me… which unfortunately so many other brands’ products do. They’ve been making pencils in the UK since 1832! Lachri Fine Art, another KZbinr, has a bunch of tutorials for painting with them. She even did the Sea Turtle and Dolphin artwork for the Inktense tins a few years back.

Ooops 😅 maybe that is why they worked so well for blush, I added a little water and rubbed it on and it was very permanent 😅 … I just read the container and it says “ 12 watercolor ink pencils… an innovative formula that acts like ink… dry permanently and do not wash out” so I see why I thought this was an option … I will correct that next time… and I will watch to see if they bleed over time on the doll

@@MyFroggyStuff I think that’s a common thing and their product wording doesn’t help. They often have to explain it. Many figure it out after it doesn’t lift off paper the way regular watercolor does. That’s why I wanted to warn you as soon as I saw that part of the video. It could be great for where you want it, but if it got on hair or clothes and dried, it might stain it. That being said though, there might be some projects you want to make with it: shirts, art, cloth bags, rooms, where you want to create art and want it to stay. I’ve yet to figure out Inktense myself as an artist. Some places still lift for me a little bit while still staining the paper. I’ve seen some great art made with it though where they do many layers without issue.

Alot if dollartist do use Derwent inktense to paint on dolls, just be wary of staining. Like I said, NerdyCapybara did an extensive review, including derwent and thanks to her review, I bought derwent for doll face-ups.

My tip for eyebrows is putting in three dots first. One on the inner corner, one on the "arch" of the brow and one for the end of the eyebrow. It's a lot easier to plan out the brows if you see where the dots are first before committing to doing the whole brow.

Great job! There's one hack to make the symmetry easier: if it's easier for you to draw the right side - start with left one, and when it's satisfactory - copy it to the right.

In several Latin American countries such as Mexico, Defa Lucy dolls are sold in places like Walmart under the name Brittany. The dolls have had various face molds and body types over time. I honestly love them because they don't cost a lot of money, and the materials of the clothes, the body, and the quality of the face paint are pretty good. I love this video ❤

Hi Toya! I'm a doll customiser myself. The watercolour pencils really only work in tandem with the sealant (Mr super clear creates a paper-like texture that the pencils can grip onto). I know that you like to avoid toxic products, so that sealant is a no go for you. I have heard of folks using matt medium and dabbing it on in thin layers with a makeup sponge to get the texture needed, so that's something to try if you'd like. But I think just using acrylic paint is totally valid! I've seen some absolutely gorgeous work done with only acrylic paint. And you're doing a brilliant job! Especially on tiny Barbie faces! One thing that helps me with getting the finer details is wearing some magnifying lenses. Hope that helps! I love your videos. 😊💖

If MSC is not a option, perhaps Americana or Aleene's acrylic matte sealant may work for you. Please make sure to use outside and allow for plenty of drying time before starting your faceup. Also chalk pastels are a good option for face-up supplies where water color pencils will be used. All in all great video. Cannot wait to see what you come up with next.

Dear Toya, you are my superhero and role model. I love watching your KZbin videos because I had a dream to have dioramas since I was a young adult, seeing that my Sindy doll was my best friend until I was 15 years old. Unfortunately I was mocked because I "wanted to play with dolls as an adult". So you have given me the guts to dust off my old dream and I am happy to say that I have started putting together my (very basic) dioramas, with lots of plans and scope for the future. Keep up the great work, Beautiful Lady!!

yayy more toya repainting ❤❤❤🔥🔥🔥💪💪💪 for pencils or pastel chalk its definitely best to use a varnish like MSC but, you can keep doing acrylic paint, and those paint pens like Posca etc just fine without any MSC or other varnishes. ive been doing that for years. it's not a big deal as long as you're aware the paint could stain the plastic or chip off - which is fine when you're not intending to take the paint off, or don't mind fixing any signs of wear some years down the line.

when removing the factory paint you can leave a tiny bit of the outlines as a guide mark for your repainting, it is not as satisfying as completely removing all the paint, but its been a life saver for my own customs! i struggle with the proportions 😅

What a great job you did customizing the dolls😍. You're just getting better and better! I appreciate the printable so we can practice too🤩 The board books were adorable! What a great idea to reuse and recycle packaging. You can basically make it into anything 👏🏻🩷 Btw, if the lower lid shimmer bothers you, next time try to add it only on the outer corner, just like makeup. It'll be visible, but probably won't catch the light as much😊.

Your repaints are looking great, especially for being a beginner! As someone who used to paint fashion dolls a lot until a few years back, for the watercolour pencils you NEED a sealant. I'm surprised the Derwent ones showed up without one at all, but that's probably thanks to them being very high in pigment. If you want to use the pencils (or some pastel powders for blush for example), but don't want to use a toxic spray sealant, you can use liquitex matte varnish and sponge it on with a makeup sponge (thinning it a little bit with water first helps) before and after applying the pencils. It's far from perfect, but it is what I used before I started using airbrush to seal it. You don't need a sealant for acrylic paints, though it can help protect the faceup. looking forward to whatever the future will bring!

All spray sealants (like MSC) are toxic. I still don't know of a brush on sealant that doesn't have a high chance of smearing everything but paint. The least toxic sealing method I can think of would be to airbrush on a sealant

I just recently started getting into painting reborn baby dolls and I use the watered down acrylic paints and folk art makes a water based nontoxic "all purpose sealer, satin finish" u can use as a base coat for better paint adhesion and as a sealing coat. If when u apply it as the prep or base coat u use a cosmetic triangle u have torn and use the torn side to apply it and make sure u get the satin finish, u can get an almost true to life skin texture. Even the base and sealer coat u water down approx 1 part sealer to 5 parts distilled water. And u can add a drop to ur painting mixture also to help ur paint flow and stick well. And u dont have to use distilled water but it just makes sure u don't have an issues due to impurities in the water. If u were to get into painting reborns babies and crafting for them then I probably wouldn't watch ANY other channel, lol!

If you want a good sealant id recommend duraclear matt varish. it's fantastic for face ups. You can brush on the first couple of layers before using pencils, but after that youd want to dab it on like concealer so you dont smug the pencils. I def wouldnt recommend mod podge for the long haul since its more likely to break down on the vinyl (unfortunately happened to one of mine). Over all your start is great! Cant wait to see more!

TOYA: I think you did a great job! The paper print out is inspired. In real life we do not have perfect symmetry with eyes either. IDEAS: If you have already made a spa/salon then you can use those extra heads in there. You can use nail polish remover to get rid of all the face details and leave it like that so it looks like a wig holder. Just style the hair and display. :) I have seen another artist use pastel chalk on doll faces but she sprays each layer with Mr. Super Clear. That stuff is EXPENSIVE!! If you soak a makeup remover pad instead of the q-tip, press the whole pad on the face for a couple of seconds, it will be easier to remove the face.

Okay so what Mr Super Clear does is basically prep the face to give it a paper like texture that dry supplies like water color pencils and chalk pastels can grip onto. It also can seal the work and protect it. If you're not using pastels to add shading/contour and keeping it simple, other alternatives could be used. Ive seen some artists use a clear acrylic based primer cut with water and applied with a make up sponge as a base, and then later sealed with duraclear matte varnish (sometimes also cut with water) to protect the finished product. Basically there are plenty of non toxic and more affordable alternatives out there... you just need to play around with them until you find what works best for you.

I recommend getting 100% acetone from an art store or hardware store. You use much less and it doesn't have the extra ingredients for the nails. Some of those things can permeate the plastic and leave stains or scents. Plus the 100% stuff is cheap and works well.

Hey Toya, love your vids!! ❤ I use all acrylic on my doll faceups (see my vids on my channel) and it's both cheaper than the watercolor/mr. super clear, and it's much quicker. Just be sure to water the paint down for nice smooth application if doing multiple layers. Nice job on the faceups!

I have learned a ton from watching Poppen Atel's videos on custom doll painting. She has a great video on the different types of watercolor pencils she uses. She like many others use the same Derwent InkTense pencils that you have, but I think she uses a Mr. Super Clear base.

Absolutely loved watching this growth process ❤ Gives me confidence that I can continue to improve if I just keep going 🥰 Not sure if you’ll review the Defa Lucy dolls, but I love them 😍 and they’ve just released new ones recently that I’m excited to add to my collection also 🥳 Just waiting on them to add more diversity and increase their articulation like Barbie to see if they’ll dominate the market ☺️

Some tips from a veteran doll artist: 1. Using a mirror to check your symmetry is very helpful with eyebrows and iris placement. 2. Try finding a matte/flat brush-on sealant, there are non toxic in the market. It will both give the surface tooth to grip onto and keep the longevity of the faceup. 3. Chalk pastels are great for shading, countouring and brightening the faceup softly! Just shave some on paper and use a fluffy brush or even a cotton bud to rub it like makeup. Works on other things too! 4. Something that helps me a lot with placing eyebrows is marking down the start point and end point gently with a matching pencil, checking the mirror for any obvious asymmetry, then draw them in- while remembering no eyebrows are true twins!

The people that I see doing face repaints on dolls use the watercolor pencils all the time. I think the only time they use the acrylic paint is if they're unable to build up the color enough with the watercolor pencils. It just looks more realistic than the acrylic paints in my opinion. Also Mr super clear is a must-have when using the watercolor pencils for doll customizing. The watercolor pencils do not write very well on the doll material so you have to use the Mr super clear to spray in the beginning and between layers. Once the pencils stops building up, you put another coat of Mr super clear on it and it makes it more like a paper texture. Also you must keep the pencils at a super sharp point to be able to get the details you need on the doll eyes. I don't know if you follow her but Poppen Atelier is amazing!

watercolor pencils only work if you use a sealant like Mr super clear. Cause you have to build up the material. Also helps when you mess up and have to remove a layer.

Good on you for finding water-based acrylic markers! Education time: paint markers can be a great tool for doll customizing, but for those of you out there that want to use a spray sealant like Mr. Super Clear, you have to be careful of the ingredients list. Not all acrylic paint markers are made equally! Some are made with oil, which reacts poorly with sealants and will get gross/ineffective in a hurry. Water based ones are the way to go. For you specifically Toya, because sealant isn't within your parameters, that's gonna give you some nice leeway. Water based art supplies aren't always removable, but they're significantly easier to take off if you make a mistake. Also mad props for using brushes with your markers, that's really useful for getting better sizing and shapes. The paint in markers like this is watered down to go on flat, kind of like how gouache is formulated, except without the risk of lifting after the fact when it's dry. I used to use some Posca pens for my repaints in the smallest size they come in, but that's still a little too big for most dolls, especially Barbie. So dipping with a small brush was a great alternative! I'm really happy to see you enjoying repaints. It's really nice to see someone tackle it in a different way than the usual spray sealant and pencils and still have good results, that makes it feel a lot more accessible to beginners. Same for your printables, what a fun idea! I may have to start doing that for planning my own customs. XD I have yet to start doing my own repaint videos, but something I really would like to do in the future are some alternative resource experiments for face ups and sealants. Because let's be real, MSC is expensive, and I'm curious what other tools people can use for this medium that will have some level of longevity. Like, you remember back when Monster High had those Create A Monsters, and there was that one that you could put temporary tattoos on? I wonder how well that would work if you did that on a doll without a flat face. There's a special paper that exists for your printer to make your own temporary tattoos, and I'm curious if that would make this art form more accessible. Same goes for stuff like nail stamping. And then if you like Rainbow High, there's so much you can do with inset eyes if you have the right size of glass cabochon, you can absolutely draw an eye on paper and then attach the cabochon to make new eyes. There's limitless potential! I want to take some time to explore it all.
