In July of 1960, at the age of ten, I had my tonsils removed and came home from the hospital to find a brunette Barbie doll with the long black gown and microphone set to go alongside. Little did I know this would lead to decades of Barbie fun for me, my daughter and my collector mother. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. 🩷🌷🩷

A really good, Arjen, thank you so much for this trip through the Barbie era's. I was lucky that my Mom loved Barbie too... I grew up in thes Sixties in California, and my first Barbie was the talking Stacey .... after her I got the talking Barbie and talking Ken.... and later of course Malibu Barbie. I never stopped collecting Barbie, her family and friends. I share the same passion. Thank you so much for your great channel! 🙋🏼♀️

My mum had pretty in pink barbie as a kid and she kept the clothes and passed them down to me when I was little. Sadly the doll was lost to time. Now I’m an adult doll collector and I got super lucky and found the pretty in pink barbie at a thrift store. Now my mums old doll is complete she is one of my most prized dolls in my collection, she’s not perfect but her and her clothes have been through 2 generations of play and love which I think makes her more special. ( my mum also kept her superstar barbie dress I’d love to find that doll one day but for now my thrifted golden dream barbie models it perfectly)

I was a Barbie girl of the late 70s and early 80s. I distinctly remember the store where I picked out Pink and Pretty Barbie at the department store toy section for my birthday. Some other iconic favorites of mine were the Day to Night Barbie, Western Barbie (until her winking eye got stuck and she turned into weird Barbie) and Barbie and the Rockers. Thanks for the memories, Arjen!

The 1980s are my era! I am lucky to have most of these beautiful dolls! I can totally see when Barbie went off the cliff and totally downhill. Just imagine if the quality of the 80s and 90s was still there today. I can’t believe when you stand a doll from today next to a 80s or 90s Barbie how much they have declined. It’s kinda sad. You should do a video like this of the collector dolls!

I remember Hollywood nails barbie obsession between us 3 cousins, our oldest cousin bought one as soon as she was released then I bought and finally our youngest cousin did, we fought so much to get those dolls from our parents. I finally got it as a birthday gift from one of my aunt who was actually distributor for Mattel dolls. I remember spending hours and hours in their warehouse .I remember all these classic Barbie’s of the 90s. The barbie comics were released around mid 90s i guess and I used to read them in their warehouse. I miss those childhood memories.

Thank-you for the trip down memory lane and also filling in the gaps for the years when I stopped collecting. I will comment on the 70s Barbies, which were my first introduction to the brand. I had all those dolls except Kissing Barbie, which my friend had. I thought that doll was kind of weird because of how her lips looked, but I didn't really see it with a romantic connotation because I was too young. I loved the Superstar mold, and I thought she was prettier than the Olympic and Ballerina Barbies. They really hit the target market with that change.

Hi, Just to answer a question you had about the wedding party - I do have to go back in time a little. In the 1960’s Barbie had sister Skipper and little brother and sister twins - Tutti and Todd, the twins later because Stacie and Todd, when I had the wedding party my flower girl and page boy were boxed separately and labelled Stacie and Todd, on the market also at that time was a new younger sister Kelly (the 90’s) - somehow poor Todd disappeared and only really Skipper kept her sibling identity complete for the duration! What a family tree…

I did like the early Fashonistas Barbie's from 2009 up to 2012 they had great fashion packs and their hair was really fun to style it was so soft, later they used glue for their hair wich it don;t like and so i stopt collecting them. For my Sister and I, the 90s were Barbie’s of the world, where they were reflecting different cultures and Byron Lars!!! Sorry, 80-90s Ken was never masculine enough for me. When I was a kid my Barbie’s boyfriend was the 12” GI Joe! I got the Rapunzel doll too, but I gave her away when I moved. Oh this is such a treat! It’s great to see you do a video like this. I’m here for whatever content you feel in your heart at a time. 🩷 I never thought about how Ken would be a meal ticket, noting his necessity to be released. There were so many differences for women in America then. Alan is my sweet boy after falling in love w him in the credits after the Barbie movie. Love my Silkstone so much. It really was so bold to have her be an astronaut! Ricky is really cute! That Chris doll is really cute. A lot of the Chelseas scare me today. I wonder how many other dolls were doing suntan look before Malibu Barbie. “Okay, this is what we’re gonna do! Dress me.” I get surprised at the Quick Curl looks too. I’m loving that Sweet 16 dress. The open mouth is kind of cute too. Listen, Millie face, the ballerina had an older face, so lay off a little! The outfit for the fashion photo dolls is soooooo gorgeous. Kissing Barbie is so sweet. Having matching outfits is such a girl squad thing. Me and a couple friends (a guy and a girl) would always pretend to be Charlie’s Angels for instance! I love you being our teacher in this one. The gold looks so sooo cute, Black Barbie and Golden Dreams, any amount of the gold. Gotta love those shiny pink pants. It’s funny how much Dream Date Barbie’s colors and dress remind me of early 2000s Barbies. I’ve been admiring 1980s workout wear lately. It was kind of cute and fun and people don’t seem to always oversexualize the tights and leotards. It’s awesome people used to use Great Shape for dressing as Barbie! I wouldn’t have guessed. I wanna wear a Peaches and Cream dress, honestly. The sleeves! Loving the look of the fur one behind Barbie and the Rockers and not sure who she is! The second Super Star Barbie skirt in bad condition was in the first bag of Barbie clothes I bought last year. It’s a fun piece, even falling apart. The 80s/90s Skipper is so cute to me and you know my girl is Courtney. Pet Pal mention!! So adorable. I like her All-Stars gym bag. Bring back ballgowns! Wedding Party Midge looks like a diorama. That should be someone between Stacey who is older and Kelly who is a toddler. Allan turned to Alan due to a divorce from an Allan, I believe. One of my fave long hair dolls is Pretty Things (I think?) Barbie with a purple dress and long brunette hair, the first I ever thrifted and painstakingly identified. I adore the cute pastel looks for Ken that existed! I hate the lack of rooted or flocked hair, though! My two Mermaids Fountain dolls are so cute (one in regular mermaid Barbie outfit and one in Fountain’s top), love the pink hair. I have a Hollywood Hair jacket I got in bad condition as well and it’s a sweet look. Sticker earrings were the BEST back then. It’s kind of fun that the dress is a bright pink of Cut and Style like the bright pink of the baby doll dress on weird Barbie and the colors of the box are reflected in her weird home. 🤔 Tori does look like that Skipper!! We had a Jewel Hair Mermaid Midge as kids and of course we got rid of her but wow was she pretty. The Pizza Hut stuff is so tempting for me to collect cause it reminds me of childhood. You used to be able to read books and get a free personal pan pizza, aww. $900 retail omg whatttt. The tech with the Barbies in late 90s is soooo fun. I wonder how the Talking worked too! That flower crop top is amazing! Teen Skipper reminds me of Odile too and I was gonna type that before you said it. We had the Bead Blast Teresa as well!! She was fun to put the beads on. 1/2

These faces never feel like Barbie to me because I wasn’t collecting and it was a change from the main 90s look. Loving that Pajama Fun look. The Glam and Groom outfits and dogs are gorgeous. I also have a Barbie as Rapunzel from a bag of Barbie clothes, it had some real great pieces. I really want a My Scene Lindsay Lohan doll. I recently got a TYCO African American doll who turned out to be a 1992 doll called Mommy’s Having a Baby who had a baby with her and a dress you could open a flap on and see the pregnant belly! I would love wearing the Swan Lake outfit too. Love the rooted hair boys in the Cali Girl line. The Fashion Fever dolls are cuuute. Including the tubes. I like the bigger heads. And I want one of the Fairies someday! You’ve been redbodying for a long time! I like the weird pose on that American Idol doll 🤣 it’d be funny for some look books. That Barbie Diaries doll is pretty. I find the My Scene expressions dolk creepy for the buttons on her back too!! Chat Divas sounds cool! I miss my iPod. Cute pink cropped silky jacket on that Barbie & Me! Hottie gets me too 🤣 The Musketeers look in green is really cute. That might be one of my fave reimaginings of the 1959. So In Style look sooo cute and they did some stuff w Rocawear. The little sisters are so cute. The boxes look so luxe. They are just lovely. I’m still with you! Barbie He Said Yes is so sweet. The breakup point was when they had kids vote on should she be with Ken or Blaine and people said BLAINE. I think the video girl Barbie could potentially be hacked into. Loving that tattoo! Cute president look! I need to get back into watching Life in the Dreamhouse! Recovering from foot surgery so I might start today! I would love a video about your top episodes or something. They do look like a fun bunch of girls 🤣 Cute fashionista looks in 2015. Love that deep pink/red hair on Rock’n Royals. The Starlight Adventure metallic outfits are reminding me of the Spectra line. I want an even fatter Barbie option tbh! I wish they’d release these diverse dolls with ball gowns and stuff!! I miss the stereotypical outfits and it’s okay to celebrate the dolls, you know? You can still theme them like some of the 90s stuff…. I think I want one of those purple tops or the redhead made to move if I could find one. That Video Game Hero doll outfit is so cute!!! I feel like they need to root Ken hair for it to matter what they do with bodies. 🤷♀️ That blonde afro girl is really pretty. The Inspiring Figures Barbies are so cute. The pastel colored hair is gorgeous. I have beautiful BMR Ken with his pretty makeup. He makes me so happy. The wheelchair Barbie was my first made to move body and the only one I have yet. That Ken Mermaid is one I actually really want. So tired of Millie! I have a pink Princess Adventure dress from a bag of doll clothes. I need to get a couple of the Extras. It’s such a waste to keep making Millie as the doll always released. They should release a random fashionista face and body with some articulation or even a made to move for each set and they would go farther! They’d sell more I think.

Yes I had Kissing Barbie as a child. I loved the lipstick stamp (which dried up quickly disappointingly), and her pretty, printed, chiffon dress (which I still have💗). It's hard to remember what the grown ups were saying about kissing. I think MY parents just thought it was cute. My Dad was very chauvinistic and didn't believe in women having careers. We were just there to serve men. My Mom went along with it and did her best to be beautiful, warm and social, and a great cook. If there was a Barbie my parents would NOT have liked, it would be one that was scantily clad, such as one that came in lingerie, or the Day to Night Barbie, because she wore a suit and competed with men for the same jobs (a doll I had no interest in). Women were supposed to be sweet, pretty and compliant, so Kissing Barbie definitely fit the bill. 💗

I actually have a bit of a problem now with my 23 y.o. child having the opposite view, and because my ex hubs is poor, my child expects all the money to come from me, which actually hurts, cuz there's no one to support me, and I was raised the opposite. Very confusing, and painful.

And I'm upset because I'm in debt now because my kid is in debt and I can't buy things I want or even need because I have to go to work and physically slog away until my credit debt is paid off cuz I gave my kid $2000. It's reminiscent of the lifeblood I gave in birth, which almost cost me my life. It sucks working to dig yourself out of a hole, especially when that work physically taxes your body. I'm tired. There's a lot to be said for a meal ticket who loves you. A strong shelter to buffer life's gale force winds. Child's father is just too poor to help our child with life's expenses. What good is he then? Not much. What good has feminism done me? I'm not sure.

video girl Barbie was controversial due to kids uploading pictures and photos online. Parents, and i think the government was concerned p3d0s would get a hold of these pictures or hack into the Barbie camera.

Arjen, we love ya, but please quit using that "meal ticket" phrase! ☹️ Housewives are chefs, bookkeepers, housekeepers, nurses, drivers, and then some! They give birth to a man's children and they fulfill all of the aforementioned roles to both the man AND his children. I worked outside the home for a couple decades before I met my husband, and then I became a stay at home mom. OMG it's so much easier to get up, have coffee, commute, and work outside the home, come home and forget about the job. If my husband had to hire someone to do all the jobs I do, he'd go broke! Meal ticket my butt! 😆😆😉 Love your videos and you're obviously a sweet person, but I HAD to say sumthin'! 😊✌️⚘️

I'm not sure how old you are, but we have to consider that for Barbie to be a teenage model in 1959, she would have been born in the early 1940s, so she's even older than the oldest Baby Boomers. That's my mom's generation, and for my mom and many of my friends' moms, their husband was the main source of family income, even if they worked part-time outside the home. The few single moms I knew of were much poorer and had help from their parents or lived in low-income housing. The large entrance of women into the workforce at better-paying, higher-skilled jobs didn't happen until the 70s and 80s (at least in Canada and the US, which are the countries with which I am most familiar). "Meal ticket" isn't the same as finding a "sugar daddy". The stay-at-home person doesn't necessarily sit on their butt, but their money for daily expenses flows through their husband and ultimately at their husband's discretion. I'm glad that changed by the time I graduated in the 1990s. At that time I called my university degree my "meal ticket". It simply means how I get the money to eat/live. There is an implication of practicality over passion to it, but, again, it doesn't mean that you don't have to put in an effort. As a side note, it is sad that although women can now have good-paying careers, it generally takes two incomes to give a similar standard of living as one in the 1960s, and women are stretched even further. I wish we could have really seen an increase in general standard of living instead of the creation of more multi-millionaires and billionaires.

@@c.w.2000 First, thanks for your thoughtful reply, but I'm still offended by the term "meal ticket". I'm 58, so I've been around for awhile. My mother is 93, ancient lol. (She'd be the first to agree). So btwn the two of us we've seen and experienced a lot of women's history. My daughter, with whom I watch Arjen's terrific vids with, is 20. We are not all women of course, but we all agree the term "meal ticket" is offensive. We'll have to agree to disagree on this. You have a nice day. 😊✌️

i dont think arjen ever intends to offend anyone. i am 40 and i have no issue with one reference to "meal ticket" in this video. i am grateful to arjen for taking the time to put this whole video together for us 👍🎉💜

10:33 when it comes to black people, most of us don't like being called a poc (a large amount of indigenous Americans too) but rather BIPOC, especially the Western diaspora (but not only in the western diaspora). Due to it sounding very similar to a dehumanizing term Hope this helps :D
